PORTABLE TRACK TRIP DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 16, 1913. Serial No. 779,319.
of New York, have invented a certain neiv and useful Improvement in Portable Track Trip Devices, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety devices adapted to be employed in connection with railways having an automatic stop system or trip members carried by the train for automaticallycontrolling the same, as a trip valve lever adapted to vent the brake pipe and apply the air brakes-when the valve is actuated by engagement with the trip device located along the track, the object being to provide an improved portable track trip device which may be carried by a brakeman, fiagman, or other employee, and readily applied to the rail at any desired time ahd place where it is desired to flag or stop a train.
My in'iprovement comprises a simple,
light, and durable construction having a body portion designed to conform to a portion of the contour of the rail and to closely engage the same so as to hold the device rigid andprevent any yielding movement of the same when struck by the trip member carried by the train. A preferred construction is formed to engage between the under side of the head and the top of the flange of the rail, said body portion having means for readily clamping same in the desired position, and a pro]ecting arm adapted to actuate the trip member carried by the train.

. According to the construction'shown in Figs. 1 and}, the body portion or block, 4,.
is designed in oiltline to conform to the .outersnrfaee or contour of the rail, 5, and
engages closely-between the under side of the head of the rail and the top surface of the flange. Any suitable or preferred means may be employed for clamping the body portion to the rail, as for instance, a thin flat spring, 6, extending from said body portion under the bottom flange of the rail, and having a hooked end, 7, engaging tightly over the other edge of said flange. A projecting arm, 8, is also provided extending into the path of, and adapted to actuate, a trip member carried by the train, this arm being supported in any convenient manner on the body portion, 4. As shown in Fig. 1, this arm is mounted on a pin or bolt, 9, secured in the body, and may have a lateral adjustment thereon, if desired, or if pre .i'ail, and when thus clamped in position, it
will be seen that the same is held absolutely rigid against any yielding or turning movement relative to the rail.
According to the modification shown in Fig. 2, the body or block, 4, is formed to embrace the upper and lower surfaces of the bottom flange of the rail. 5, and is clamped in position by means of a flat spring, 6, with hooked end, 7 the same as in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 3, the clamping device is fastened to the rail by means of an opening through the web. and such a device may be used where it is not convenient to pass the clamp beneath the bottom flange. In this construction the body or block, 4, is formed to engage between the head and the flange of.,the rail, the same as in Fig. 1, but it is provided with a-stem, 11, extending through said block and through an opening, '10, in the .web of the rail, the stem having a notch, 15, adapted to fit over the web, and carrying a key, 12, mounted to slide upon said stem and extending through said opening so as to wedge the notched end of the stem upon theweb of the rail and thereby rigidly clamp the block in position. The key engages the stem by means of a lug, 13, sliding in the groove or slot, 14, which retains the key on the stem when the same is withdrawn from the opening in the web of the Patented Sept. 14,1915.-
BRET AVAILABLE COPY this construction the device may be readily attached to the rail. by inserting the stem through the hole, 10, in the web. and then pushing in the key, .12, which wedges the notched end of the stem down upon the web. To detach the same, the key is withdrawn thereby permitting the stem to be tilted up suliieient-ly to clear the notch and be removed from the opening.
From the foregoing; description, it will be seen that l have provided a siinpli and inexpensive construction of a portable trip device. \vhich is-light and durable, and may be readily attached tothe rail at any point where it is desired to flag or stop a train.
l'l aving now described my invention, what I claim as nei and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. portable traelc trip device comprising a body portion having a longitudinal surface formed to engage the under side of the head 01 the rail and '.iosely engage therewith, a clamp extending around to the other side of the rail for holding said body in position, and a projeeting arm l'or operating a trip member carried by the train.
2. A portable traclc trip device comprising a body portion having a longitudinal surface formed-to closely engage a eorrespomling portion of the surface at one side of the rail. a spring clamp rigidly attached to said body and extendii'ig around to the other side of the rail for holding the body in position, and a projecting arm for operating a' trip member carried by the train.
3. A portable track trip device comprising a body portion having longitudinal surfaces formed to engage the under side of the head and the top of the flange ot the rail, a clamp adapted to extend beneath the rail -for holding said body in position, and a pro ecting arm extending into the path of a trip member carried on the train.
4. A portable track trip device comprising a body or block having a longitudinal surface formed to engage the top of the flange of the rail, a spring clamp extending under the bottom of the rail and having a hooked end (imaging the edge of the flange, and a projecting arm adapted to actuate a trip member carried by the train.
