Description

PATENT OFFIoE.
ADOLPH MILLOCHAU, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH W.
RICHARDS, OF SAME PLACE.
I IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRIGATING COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,342, dated May 30, 1871.
I, ADOLPH MILLOCHAU, of the city and 7 State of New York," have invented anew and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Lubricating Compounds for Lubricating Mat chinery and for other purposes; and hereby declare the following is an exact description thereof.
The compound is produced in three forms: first, a semi-fluid substance for use in any of the lubricating-cups; second, an oil or liquid 7 substance, to be used with-or without cottonwaste or any proper packing; and third, combining, withthe semi-fluid substance or compound, animal hair;
1 take ten pounds of caustic soda, in liquid form, at about 16 Baum scale, twenty pounds of a good qualty of tallow, and forty pounds of scale, and the wholeforms a uniform semifiuid substance when cold. In this operation the compound will lose about twenty-three per cent. of its weight, and will be prevented from melting ortaking fire from ordinary or light friction, and beleft of a consistency and tenacityof ordinary lubricating grease.
This mixture, in ,the condition left by the foregoing treatment, is placed in bags or othor similar inclosures, and submitted to pressure to any desirableextent, and should be so pressed until as much of the oil or liquid substance as desirable is removed.
The liquid or oil thus removed forms a superior lubricator, to be used with or without cotton-waste or other suitable packing, as other oils or other liquids are or may be used for lubricating purposes; and the semi-fluid compound left in the press may be applied by means of lubricating-cups or other similar ap' pliances and in any desirable manner.
To the pressed or semi-fluid product of the compound I add animal hair in about the proportion of five pounds of hair to one hundred pounds of the pressed product, and thoroughly mixand incorporate them. In this-form it may be used in the ordinary lubricating boxes or receptacles without cotton-waste or other packing.
While I believe that the combination of materials and treatment described will produce the best results, I do not desire to be understood as limiting .my invention to the exact proportions named or the precise treatment described; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let- Dated April 29, 1871. A. MILLOGHAU.
