. FUEL-SAVING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. fgrtgntngq @Qpt jigi lglfj Application filed April 12, 1915, fierial 210.20,?20.
At the present time the products of com" bustion are usually discharged to the stove pipe at a comparatively low temperature, thereby causing a considerable loss of fuel, and the principal object of this invention is to effectively mix a stream of superheated air with the primary products of combustion so effecting a second combustion, result ing in the elimination of smoke and consequently greater eificiency.
Further objects are to permit of the device being readily fitted to stoves at present in use, to simplify the construction and generally adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them.
With the above objects in view, the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a frag mentary perspective view of a stove embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the air superheater. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the outer member of the air superheater. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the cover or inner member of the air superheater.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a stove and B the improved air superheater mounted thereon. The said stove being of any usual type and not forming part of the present invention, it is deemed unnecessary to further describe the same.
The air superheater B is designed to replace the ordinary cover on the stove above the fire and consists of an outer cylindrical member 10 carrying on the top an outwardly extending radial flange 11 integral therewith having a recess 12 around its inner periphery. The cylinder is formed with an integral bottom having a pli'irality of orifices 13 therethrough adjacent to the periphery and further carries an integral upward and concentrically located battle flange 14; which extends partially through the said cylinder. '7;
The cylincer 10 is designed to be closed on the upper end by the cover 16 which is pro- .vided with a concentric circular depression 17 having an orifice 18 through the center thereof and aplurality of radially extending orifices 19, one. of which is preferably T-shaped, the said cover being further provided with a downwardly extending bafi'le flange 20 adapted to be concentrically located to the fiange I l and extending below the upper edge thereof.
To control the flow of air through the orifices 19 an air valve 21 carrying a downwardly disposed central integral projection 22 is rotatably mounted in the orifice 18 and provided with a plurality of orifices 23 adapted to register with the orifices 19 when the valve is opened, the movement of the said valve being limited by the integral project ion 2 1 engaging with the T-shaped orince.
'W'hen the stove is in operation the smoke on. its passage to the stove pipe causes an induced current of air to pass through the orifices 23 and 19 into the chamber formed by the flange 20, the cover 16 and the bottom of the cylinder 10 where it is superheated, the said air then passing through the passageway between the bafiie flanges 20 and 14 and the inner periphery of the cylinder 10, being finally discharged through the orifices 13' to intermiX with the smoke, causing a better and final combustion of the same.
It has been found in practice that byintel-mixing a stream of such superheated air with the primary products of combustion that a second combustion, causing a greater heat and reducing the clinkers to a fine ash, is brought about, thereby effecting a considerable saving in fuel.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitingsense.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In combination with a stove, a super to said outer cylindrical wall, and air admission controlling means on :said inner griddle section. V 1 2.'The' combination with a stove of a superheater comprising a cylindrical member having a radial flange on the upper end ,thereof provided with a recess in-its inner periphery and oriflces'through the bottom,
an upwardly extending, baffle flange integral with the bottom and concentrically lo- .cated in the cylinder, a cover adapted to engage with the recess having a depression in the center thereof provided with a'cenorifice in the center of the cover, and a second projection integral with the air valve and located near the periphery thereof designed to engage with the T-shaped orifice, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
