To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND W. Knoon, of San Francisco, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balanced Centrifugal Pumps, whereof the following is a specification.
My invention relates to balanced centrifugal pumps and the object of which is to provide in that class of pump means whereby the impellers therein are automatically held in axial alinement and to eliminate thrust bearings or the like therefore reducing the friction and vibration in operation.
With this purpose in view my invention consists in the axial adjustment of the impellers which I accomplish by cushioning the same against equalizing cushioning chambers and further consists in other parts and their combinations as will be described in detail hereinafter and pointed out in the claims at the end hereof. I
In the-accompanying two sheets of drawings which form a part of this application I have illustrated my invention in what 1 consider its best form and in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal section in elevation of a centrifugal pump having a double suction inlet and embodying my invention. as it appears in practice and Fig. 2, is also a similar section but showing a'centrifugal pump having a single suction inlet and a modification of my invention applied thereon.

Detailed desom'ption.l will now describe the mechanism of the apparatus set forth in the above figures of the drawings, in which,
1 represents the base upon which the supported parts of a centrifugal pump constructcd as hereinafter mentioned, are set up such the casing 2 and bearing 3 in which is mounted the d iving shaft 4, carrying the impeller 5 adjusted in the casing 2, and pul' the. shaft centrally within E1116 casing 2 and the suction pipes 9 and 9 thereby equalizing the space area of the suction pipes.
The outer end of bearing 12 in which the shaft 1 extends is closed as at 13 to prevent leakage at that point, while the bearing 11 at the opposite end through which the shaft passes is provided with stufiing box 1% for the same purpose.
lVithin the surrounding outlet ends of suction pipes 9 and 9 are circular suction chambers 15 and 15 facing the necks 16 and 16 of the impeller 5 and are formed by inwardly projectinginnerwalls 17 and 17 and outer projecting walls 18 and 18.
The walls 17 and 17 project toward the necks of the impeller leaving however, annular spaces 19 and 19 between to establish outlet communication with the suction chambers l5 and 15 andthe suction inlets 20 and 20 of the impeller.
The outer walls 18 and 18 project over the circumference of the necks 16 and 16 of the impeller, leaving therebetween passages 21 and 21' to establish permanent inlet communication between the pressure chambers 22 and 22 and the suction chambers 15 and 15. p
The necks 16 and 16 are provided with wearing surfaces'23 and 23 having an L shaped form and removably secured in position by means of screws 241 and 24c or otherwise, and the chambers 15 and 15 are provided with flushing pipes 25 and 25 having valves 26 and 26 as shown in Fig. 1, the purpose of which is to clean out the sand or any other foreign matter which may accumulate therein. while in operation.
In Fig. 2, l have illustrated a modification of chambers 15 and 15 which consists in making that part of my invention adjustable by means of screws 27 and 27' con-.
The mode of operation of my pump is as follows :The impeller 5 being set in moti n. a partial vacuum is created in the suction pipes 9 and 9- and the fluid draw u through the impeller in the direction shown by the arrows until a pressure is created be tween the impeller and the casing 2 and said pressure is continuous throughout the annular spaces between the impeller 5 and the casing 2 exerting an even pressure on both sides of the impeller and thus keeping same in perfect alinement within the casing. Should, however,
the impeller shift toward suction chamber 15, for instance that will partly close the annular space 19, and. the fluid in the pressure chamber 22' entering chamber, 15', communicating the pressure chamber, 22 with the suction chamber, 15', being smaller than the annular space, 19", just mentioned, by reason of the shifting position of the impeller, allow the fluid from the pressure chamber, 22, to enter into the suction chamber, 15, and to pass out into 1 the suction inlet, oi, the impeller more rapidly, thus creating vacuum in the chamber, 15, and thereby force the impeller to return back to its normal position and vice versa until the impeller is balanced.
Having thus described my invention, and an embodiment of it, in the full, clear and exact terms required by law, and knowing that it comprises novel, useful and valuable improvements in the art to which it pertains,

What I claim and desire to secure by Let-.
ters Patent of the United Statesis the following, to wit 1. A centrifugal pump comprising a casing, an impeller in said casing having a double suction inlet, chambers in said casing adjacent to said suction inlets provided with inlet and outlet passages and means for varying the length of said inlet passages and the space of said outlet passages.
2. In combination with the casing and the impeller of a centrifugal pump, a suction inlet on each side of said impeller, removable suction chambers in the casing engagingfthe suction sides of. the impeller and means for adjusting said chambers in position.
3. Acentrifugal pump comprising a cas ing, an impeller in said casing provided with outward projecting necks on the sides thereof, central suction inlets in said necks, adjustable pressure chambers formed in the casing adjacent to said necks and connected to said suction inlets.
