To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, OTTO KARCI-IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carr ton, county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more specifically to that class of pumps used in connection with tanks or other receptacles containing liquids of various kinds and designed more specifically for retail dealers, such as druggists and those dealing in liquids.
The objects of the present invention are, first, to provide a pump that is portable and easily operated, second, to produce a convenient and easily operated pump, third, to securely hold the pump in proper relative position with reference to the tank or can in which it is placed, and fourth, to register the quantity of liquid pumped. These objects, together with other objects readily apparentto'those skilled in the art, I attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although my invention may be embodied in a variety of other mechanical forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example. I
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the cam in proper relationship with reference to the pump barrel, piston and piston operating device. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the rotary cam showing a portion of the top of the pump barrel, also showing the registering dial in proper relative position. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the pump cylinder or barrel, the cam carrying head and piston rod actuatinghead. Fig. 4: is a dc tached view of the cam rollers and their connecting bar. Fig. 5 is a section of the cam rollers showing a portion of the cam and a section of the piston rod actuating head. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the piston valve. Fig. 7 is a view showing a portion of the pump spout and section of the screen. Fig. 8 is an end view of the delivery spout showing the screen. Fig. 9 is a view showing the clamp properly connected to the can or tank and to the pump barrel. In the accompanying drawing 1 representsthe pump cylinder or barrel which is formed of any desired length and size, reference being had to the particular use to which the pump proper is to be put. To the top or upper end of the cylinder 1 is attached a cap or head 2 to which cap or head is'attached or formed integral therewith the bracket 3, to which bracket is attached the lug bolt- 4: which lug bolt forms a suitable bearing upon which is rotatably mounted the cam 5 and itshub 6. The bracket 3is provided with the flange 7 through which flange the top or upper end of the piston rod 8 slides, said flange being so located that it guides the piston rod and at the same time holds the same in proper position. The pump cap 2 is provided with the guide 9 through which guide the piston rod 8 passes. To the piston rod 8 is connectedthe block or head 10 by means of the set screw 11 or its equivalent. To this block or head 10 is connected the pin or post 12, which is located in the aperture 13, said pin or post being so connected that it may rock.
To the pin 12 is connected the bar 1 1 and to which bar are connected the short pins 15 upon which the cam rollers 16 are mounted. The rollers 16 are so spaced that they will come upon the opposite sides or faces of the cam 5 as best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5, and are so spaced thatby the rotary movement of the cam 5 a reciprocating movement will be imparted to the block or head 10, which in turn imparts a reciproeating movement to thepiston rod 8. It will be understood that a rocking movement will be impartedto the bar 14 by reason of the movements of the cam rollers 16, which rollers follow the curved surfaces of the cam and in order to permit this rocking movement the pin 12 or post should be loosely mounted in the aperture 13, but the same result may be accomplished by loosely mounting the bar 14: upon the pin or post 12, it being immaterial as the only object is to provide means whereby the bar 141 may rock. For the purpose of properly guiding the block 10, saidblock is provided with the flange 17 which flange is provided with the straight face 18, which face rests against the arm 19 formed upon the bracket 3, said construction being best illustrated in Fig. 3.
To the bottom or lower end of the piston tionof the valves connected to the piston rods, or more specifically reciprocating valves their perlpherles or contact surfaces are provided with some fibrous material,
but in this instance the valve proper is made up of two spaced flanges 22 and 23 and the body of the valve intermediate said spaced flanges formed of a diameter less than the innerdiameter or bore of the pump cylinder. Y By this construction of the piston valve any liquid that may find its way between the flanges 22 and 23 will be at least temporarily held and held for a suflicient length of time to constitute the packing or filling between the flanges 22 and 23, there dispensing with the ordinary ring pack- It will be understood that by the peculiar formation of the cam 5 a rapid reciprocating movement is imparted to the piston rod 8 and in order to give a quick cut-ofl to the piston valve the sliding valve 2% is so formed that it will act quickly upon the down stroke of the piston and for the purpose of properly guiding the sliding valve 24: the bottom or lower end of the piston rod 8 is formed hollow so that the valve stem 25 may be slidably mounted in the hollow portion of the piston rod 8, by which arrangement the valve 24 isprevented from tilting.
In pumps of this character it is of utmost importance to prevent any dripping from the delivery spout 25* after the required amount of liquid has been pumped, and in order to thus prevent the dripping the delivery end of thedeliveryspout is provided with the gauze disk 26. 7

It will be understoodthat the pump cylinder 1 should be securely attached to the can or tank, and in order to properly hold the cylinder so that the cam 5 can be rotated by means of the crank 27 a collar 28 is provided, which collar is provided with the opening 29 formedof a size to correspond substantially with the size of the pump cylinder; The collar 28 is also provided with the extension, which extension is located above the top of the tank as best illustrated in Fig. 9. The opening 29 is provided with the side opening or recess 31, through which recess the rocking clamp member 32 is passed. This rocking clamp memberv is provided with the spaced arms 33'and 34. The arm 33 being provided with the thumb screw 35, which thumb screw is adapted to be seated upon the collar extension 30 and when the thumb screw is rotated in one direction it will tilt the clamp member 32 and also the pump cylinder 1 into 1 the position illustrated in Fig. 9 by reason of the fact that the lower end of the screw 35 comes in contact with the arm 30. The lower member 34 of the clamp member 32 will press against the underside of the tank, thereby having a tendency to bulge the top of the tank upward. For the purpose of registering the amount of liquid pumped a register dial 36 is provided, the periphery of which is provided with ratchet teeth 37.
The flange 17 located upon the block 10 is provided with the pin 38, which pin engages the teeth 37 and during the upward movement of the flange 17 and while engaged with a given tooth will intermittently rotate the register dial, said register dial being provided with proper numerals to indicate the amount of liquid pumped. Upon the downward stroke of the flange 17 the pin 38 will ride over the teeth 37 by reason of the check spring 39, which check spring is also provided with the pointer 4-0, said pointer being for the purpose of indicating the distance the register dial has been rotated. In Fig. 2 I have illustrated in dotted lines the arm to which the dial 36 is connectedby means of the screw 4-1, said arm being shown in dotted lines. It will also be understood that the spring 39 should be rigidly held against rotation.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a pump of the character described, the combination of a pump cylinder, a cap located at the top or upper end of the pump cylinder, said cap provided with a bracket. a double faced cam rotatably mounted and carried by the bracket, a piston rod, means for guiding the movement of said piston rod, a block connected to said piston rod intermediate the means for guiding said rod, a rock bar pivotally connected to the block, said rock bar provided with rollers located upon opposite sides of its pivotal point and upon opposite sides of the double faced cam.
2. In a pump of the character described, the combination of a pump cylinder, a. cap located at the top or upper end of the pump cylinder, said cap provided with a bracket, a double faced cam rotatably mounted and carried by the bracket, a piston rod, means for guiding the movement of said piston rod, 'a-block connected to said piston rod intermediate the means for guiding said rod, a rock bar pivotally connected to the block. said rock bar provided with rollers located upon opposite sides of its pivotal point and upon opposite sides of the double faced cam, and means for guiding the block.
3. In a pump of the character described, the combination of a pump cylinder, a piston and a piston rod located within said cylinder, a bracket connected to the pump 1,153,312 all cylinder, said bracket provided with an arm and means for guiding the piston rod, a double faced cam rotatably mounted upon the bracket, a block adjustably connected to the piston rod, said block provided With a straight faced flange adapted for contact With the bracket arm, a rock bar pivotally connected to the block, said rock bar provided With rollers, said rollers located upon 10 opposite sides of the pivotal point of the OTTO KARGHER.
