Be it,kno wn that L'DANIEL SEMING, a citizen of the "United States, residing at Spokane,- inl'thel county-56f Spokane and State of Washington; have invented -certain new and usefuh-Improvements in Saw Gages, ofwhich-the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements 'in;
mortis'ing and tenoningmachines: V "Itis onelof the objects to provide means for holding thestock together-.with'an-improved gage device, which-is. adjustable with respect to; the supporting means j for holdinga sawordike tool in the-desired working position with respect to the stock.
j A' further: object is toprovide an im-' proved "gage device with portions adapted ures of the drawings;
to act in opposition to each other to' hold an interposedtool infa predeterminedposition with respect to the stock and in a manner so that-the held toollmay be operated upon the stock.-
.A further object is o provide depth gaging means adapted for' connection- With the tool for, coaction with the; gage device to limit the depth ofkerf or' cut of the: tooli- Other features and objectsof the -i'nven-'"' tion will be more fully described'in connection with the accompanying drawings, and will be more particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims. v V
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device of my invention deview of a piece of stock operated on by the device of my invention. 1 Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the difierent fig- As illustrated, the device of my invention includes a stock supporting element,
which may be in the form of a rectangular block 1 adapted to be disposed upon a support or bench 2. The stock supporting.
block 1 may be provided with a projection 3 adapted to beinserted in one of the usual bench stop holes 4, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Another projection 5 isf -provided it I abut against-the vise face 6' of the bench and be securedby -means:-of screws 7 for which.
holes 8 I areQprovided inthe projection 5. The pro-jectionj' 5 preferably lies/flush with and forms a continuation ofa-"stock face 9 of the. block 1, r and against which the stock lO may be hel'd by" meanssuchas a vise The" block l may be groove M12.- f0? slidab'ly-supporting a guide 13 0f a tool 1 gage which-may comprise a-tool block 14,
formed-integralwith guide 13. Guide 13 is; shown-provided with a slot15 for projection .therethr'o'ugh' of a screw '16, the latter hav- 1 *ing a head 17 in the form of a; wingednut,' wvhereby the screw 16 may be readily turned to anchor the, toolgage in' adjusted positions on the stoclrblock. I p-refer to recesj'sthe block 1;, as indicated at 18, to form a shoul I I der 19', whic'his-sordisposed as to arrest adjustment jofthe toolzgage in a direction away from the stock 10 when the teale11- gaging face 20 is} flush with thes'tock en gag-ing'fa'ce 9. 5 l
Atool which is shown in the form of a saw2l, adapted 'ft'o -be disposed abreast of the to'ol or saw engaging face 20, whereby the saw is gaged with relation tothe stock 10 so as to kerf the latter in accordance with the adjustment of the block 14: with respect to block 1. The gage block let is provided with a depth gaging face 22,,the purpose of which willpresently appear. 7
In order to hold the saw 21 against the block 14 and to 'permitof working movement of the saw 21, I provide a retaining element 23 which acts'in opposition to block 14 to support the saw in working position in desired relation with the stock. The retaining element 23is shown to be spring-actuated, and I have illustrated U-shaped' strip springs 24, the ends 25 of which are shown secured to block 14L while the ends 26 are se-.
'. cured to retaining element 23 to not only support the latter but force it toward block 14. Retaining element 23 is mounted in a.
manner to dispose its upper face 27 in flush relation with gage face 22, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2.
seen'that the'stock 28 may be kerfed at 29 and 30 to form a mortise of any desired form. If it is desired to form a tenon, then a transverse cut will be made at 31. a
V I will next describe my improved means From the foregoing. description it will be depth or of selected predetennineddepths. l
' claims may import; I claim:
' Referring to Fig. 5, my improved depth gage is'shown as comprising clamping bars 32, which are'adapted to be disposed on opposi'te sides of' the'saw 21, as indicated m Fig; 2, after desired position above the depth gage faces 22 and 23. U-shaped actuating 13 elements are provided, as indicated at- 33,
and the free'end's thereof are connectedwith I thebars 32, as :indicated at 34. Clamping screws 35 are provided to causethe bars :32 to'tightly grip the saw -21 so that when the latter has kerfed to the desired depth, the bars 32' will engage the depth gaging faces- 22 and 23 and thereby prevent the saw from cutting beyond a predetermined depth. j p
' It believed that the advantages and utility of this invention willbeclearfrom j .the foregoing description, andvwhile -I have herein shown. and-described one specific form V of my invention, I do not wish to be limited.
thereto except for such limitations as the 1. In a sawgage, a stock supporting block having a substantially vertically disposed side face against whichthe stock is-adapted to be engaged and also providedwitha top horizontalface having a groove extending at right angles to the plane of said' side face, a i
saw gage block adjustable in said groove and having a laterally disposed saw gage copies of this patent maybe obtained for into flush relation with said stock face or parallel relation therewith, saw
