lBe itV known that I, JOHN -M. GINuER, a citizen of the United States, residing at `Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have-invented certain new and u se`. ful Improvements in Vulcanizers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vulcanizers in which the vulcamzer 1s applied'to a puncture or small tears or cuts y be applied after the same has been properly heated; second, to provide means for retaining the heat and applying the vulcanizer while in heated condition, third, to simplify Y the construction of vulcanizers of the class to which this belongs, and fourth, to reducev the time required for the repairing of tires.
l These objects, together with other objects V readily apparent to thoseskilled in the art, I attain by the construction illustrated in the .accompanying drawings, although my invention may be embodied in a variety of other forms, the construction shown in the drawings being chosen by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section showing all of the parts pertaining to the vulcanizer properly con-l nected andthe same applied to a tube. Fig'. 2 is a view of the vulcanizer platel and the various parts employed in' heating the plate. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3, of Fig. l. Fig. 4 shows a side elevation of the assembled device upon a reduced scale.l
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawings l represents the base or support upon which the tube, designed to be acted upon, is placed. To this base or support is attached the screw threaded bolt 2 in any convenient and well known manner, either by screw threads or otherwise. The bolt 2 is provided with the wing-nut 3, which wing-nut is for the purl pose hereinafter described.

When it is desired to heat the vulcanizing plate 4 it, together with the different parts connected thereto, is placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, which is in an inverted position from the position when the same is used for vulcanizing. A sufficient quantity of liquidv fuel is placed in thecup 8, when said cup isin the osition shown in ames moving upward against the now underside of the vulcanizing plate and against the pins 7, a sufficient quantity of liquid fuel being placed in the cup to properly heat, but not overheat the vulcanizing plate.

The cup 8 is also provided with a series of pins or posts 14 which are formed hollow, the openings in said posts 14 extending through the cup as fest illustrated in Fig. 1, whereby air is permitted to pass through'said openings, thereby aiding combustion. .It will be understood that air will -also enter the tube 9 at its open end and the tube designed to be repaired, said tube resting upon the base l, as best illustrated in Fig. l.
In order to retain the heat the cup 8 is inclosed by means of a cover which cover consists of what might be termed a cup or cap formed of a size to correspond substantially with the size of the cup 5S and to inclose portions of the fingers or pins 7, said cup being held by means of an annular flange 16 upon which annular flange seated 'the cup or cover 15, as bestl illustrated in l, said flange lo extending` to a height sutilcient to properly hold the cup lo ln use, the vulcanizing plate is inverted after being properly heated and the cupplaced in posi* tion.
For the purpose of retaining the heat and at the same tiine allowing the cup to be handled it is provided vwith suitable non-conducting material, preferably asbestos, `which may be solid or corrugated, as shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. l. This lining; i7 is so arranged that it will not interfere With the placing of the cup in the position illustrated in Fig. l.
For the purpose of holding,` the vulcanizn ing plate irinly upon a tube or other article to be patched a clamping ring i8 is provided, said ring being provided with an arm 19 which is pivoted at 20 to the post 6. By this construction when the Wing# nut 3 is tightened the fingers 24 firmly clamp the vulcanizing plate upon the tube Which is to be repaired.
It will be understood that in actual use the vulcanizing plate can be heated While it is in the position shown in Fig. 2 and when detached from the basc or support 1, the tube designed to be treated can be placed in proper position after which the vulcanizing plate can be placed in the position shown in ig. l. By' this arrangement it will be obvious that the vulcanizing plate Will not become over-heated duringf the time the tube 's being repaired owing to the fact that the quantity of fuel can be regulated so that it will be entirely' consumed bei'ore the vulcanizing plate is over-heated, but if in 'the event it should be ove-cheated .it need not be applied until the saine has properly cooled.

ldarticular attention should be called to the fact that by means of the tireless vuleanizer herein described much time may be saved in the repairing of tires which is an important item, especially when making repairs on the road. Vv'ith vulcanizers heretofore comnionlycin use it vvas necessary to prepare the tire, then apply the vulcamzer, then lill the fuel receptacle, light the fuel, and await the complete combustion thereof.
.With the present invention, however, the
fuel may be placed in the vulcanizer and lighted, and While the vulcanizer is being heated the tire may be prepared for vulcanizing. By the time the vulcaniaer` is heated the tire will be ready to be clamped between the plates l and i and if desired the vulcanizer with the tire so clamped 4may be placed in the machine and the journey resumed Without further delay. This is also made possible by reason of the fact that the cover 15 acts as a guard to prevent the heated vulcaniaing plate l from doing damage to any article with which it may come in Contact.
