To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, l VILLIAM TnNBUso a citizen of the United States, residing at Pana', in the county of Christian and State provide a device of this character employing acetylene gas for fuel and constructed in the most simple manner consistent with its proper operation. 7
In carying out the above end, I provide an acetylene generator having a gas burner, a valve for controlling the'amount of water fed to the carbide receptacle, a valve for controlling the gas discharged therefrom, both of said valves having laterally oper ating arms and a carrier for said generator,
said carrier having a receptacle provided for the reception of said generator and having a pair of bayonet slots adapted to receive said laterally swinging arms whereby the generatoris retained in the carrier by said arms.
A secondary object of the invention is to render the device inexpensive in manufac ture without sacrificing any ofits advantages.
With the above objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken along the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the receptacle and the generator therein; and Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section showing parts illustrated in Fig. 3 on an enlarged scale.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention as applied to a lan tern which includes a generator receptacle 1 surrounded by an outwardly and upwardly inclining supporting flange, a suitable head or cap 2, globe 3 and guard 4 around said globe and connecting the receptacle 1 with the cap 2.

As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the ,upperend of the receptacle 1 as well as portions of the cap 2, are perforated, this construction beingcommon to devices of this character.
It is to be further noted'that the receptacle 1 is of cylindrical formation andhas its upper edge provlded with the outwardly extending flange which forms a support for the shield 4. Thisalso is a common construction butsaid upper end of the receptacle 1 coacts with fastening means in a manner to be described.
Disposed within the receptacle 1 andprefverably resting on the lo'werfend thereof, is
an acetylene generator 5, saidgenerator' be p ing formed man upper section 5 and a lower section 57, said sections beingunited by means of forming mterengagmg screw threads on their meeting ends. As most clearly shown in Fig.8 a horizontal partitlon 6 extends transversely across the upper sectioni 5, thus dividing the generator-into an upper chamber 7 and a lower chamberjS, said "upper chamber being adapted for'the reception of water while the chamber 8 receives the carbide from which the gas is to be generated. s
For the purpose of controllingthe amount of water fed into the receptacle8 from the receptacle 7, I provide a tube "9 which depends from the partition 6 and 001 1111111 1 cates'with the chamber 7, the lowerend of said tube being contracted as indicatedat 10 to form a seat for a'needle valveill, the latter rising through the chamber 7, through a stufling box 12 in the upper end thereof and being provided with a laterallyswing- 7 ing operating arm13. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the upper end of. said valve 11 is threaded for engagement with internal threads formed on the stufling box. Thus it will be seen that when the arm 13 is swung in the proper 7 direction, the valve 11 will be raised out ofcontact with its seat thereby allowing the desired amount of water to flow into the receptacle 8 or that all communication between the receptacles 7 and 8 may be obstructed.
Leading upwardly from the receptacle 8 through the partiti )n 6 and the upper end of thechamber 7, is an upright gas discharge tube. 14:, the latter preferably having a screen 15 at its lower end while its extreme upper end, rising above the top of the chamber '7, is externally threaded as most clearly seen at 16 in Fig. 5. Threaded upon the upper threaded portion of said tube 14, is an internally threaded sleeve 17, the latter being provided with a transverse slot 18 and forming a support for a burner tip 19, the lower end of which is spaced fromthe upper end of the tube 14:. As clearly shown in F ig; 5, the slot 18 is disposed between the contiguous ends of the tube 14 and tip 19. Revolubly mounted within the space is .a partition 20 which is threaded on its exterior for engagement with the internal threads of the sleeve 17, said partition having a central opening 21, the material around said open ing inclining upwardly and inwardly for the purpose of forminga valve seat for a needle valve'22, the latter being rigidly secured within the tube 14 and being adapted to close the opening 21 when the partition 20 is rotated in the proper direction by meansmeans for securing said generator within thereceptacle 1, the upper edge of said receptacle being provided with a pair of bayonet slots 24 for their reception. Thus it will be seen that when the arms 13 and 23 are moved in the proper directions, they will open or close their respectivevalves, as the case may be, and will simultaneously retain the entire generator within the receptacle 1 of the carrier. It will further be noted that, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, said arms may be so positioned as to allow the generator to be readily removed from said receptacle.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that these arms perform the two-fold function above mentioned and i that this construction eliminates parts which forms of such keepers might well be employed to equal advantage.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim'as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is r In combination, a horizontal supporting plate having an opening, an upright tube having its upper end projected through and above said opening and provided with external screw threads, a shoulder on the tube contacting with the lower side of the plate, an upright internally threaded sleeve whose lower end receives therein the upper externally threaded end of the tube and bears on the upper side of said plate, the threads in said sleeve being continued therein sub stantially throughout the length thereof, and said sleeve being provided with a horizontal slot, a centrally apertured partition in the sleeve having external screw threads engaging the threads in the sleeve above the tube, a handle projecting from the partition through the slot in the sleeve, and a iixed needle valve in the tube alined with the aperture in the partition.
