SHUTTER-HOLDING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH HEsKETH and ALFRED OLSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the' provements in devices forholding window shutters in their opened positions, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the shutters may be released by a person in the house.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character constructed in such a manner that the same will positively hold the shutters in their open positions, and further to provide a device which is exceedingly simple in construction, and one which can be easily and quickly applied.

With these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 2- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a building wall, showing the device in place. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Referring to the drawing 1 indicates a shutter, which has secured thereto a plate 2 which is provided with a hook 3, said hook having a beveled end 1, the purpose of which will appear later.

Extending through the wall 5 of the building is a rotatable rod 6, the inner end of which has detachably connected thereto an operating handle 7, which bears against the plate 8 so as to'limit the outward movement of said rod. The plate Sis fixed to the inner wall of the building in any suitable manner.

3 ormed on the outer end of the rod 6 is a head 11, said head being provided with a vertical groove 12, the rear wall of which is formed with a rounded shoulder 13. By providing the head 11 with the groove 12 spaced plates 14: are provided which engage the pin 15 on which pivotally supports the shank 16, said shank having a weight 17 formed on itslower end, and a hook 18' formed on its upper end, said hook having a beveled surface 19. By providing the weight 17 it is obvious that the shank 16 will hang in a perpendicular position, thus assuring that the hook 18will be positioned for engagement by the hook 3 when the shutter l is swung to its open position. The shutters are connected to the building by spring hinges 20. which may be of any well known construction, said spring serving to swing the shutters to their closed positions upon disengagement of the hooks 3 and 18.

From this construction it will be seen that when the shutters are swung to their open positions that the hooks 3 and 18 will engage each other, thus rocking the shank 16 inwardly so that the beveled faces of the respective hooks will ride over each other, whereupon the hook 18 will drop into engagement with the hook 3. It will be noted that the plates 14 are slotted, as at 21, and it is through these slots that the pin 15 passes. Thus it will be seen that the shank 16 is not only capable of swinging rearwardly, but the same may also slide slightly upwardly, thus permitting the hooks 3 and 18 to engage each other in an easy manner. The shoulder 13 is engaged by the rounded lug 22 formed on the shank, thus limiting the downward movement of said shank, but at the same time to permit the same to move upwardly and pivot on the pin 15. After the hooks 3 and 18 are engaged, and it is desired to close the shutters, it is only neces sary to rotate the rod 6, which action causes the shank 16 to swing laterally, thereby disengaging the hooks 3 and 18, whereupon the shutters will swing to their closed position under the action of the spring hinges 20.

What is claimed is 1. In a shutter the combination with a hook carried by the shutter, of a rod rotatably associated with the wall of the building, said rod having a shank pivotally and slidably connected to its outer end, said shank having a hook adapted to engage the first named hook, and to disengage the same upon rotation of the rod.

2. In combination with a hook carried by the shutter, of a rod rotatably supported by the Wall of the building, said rod having spaced plates carried by its outer end, a shank slidalolv and pivotally supported between the plates and having a hook on its upper end, and a Weight on its lower end,

said hooks being adapted for interlocking engagement when the shutter is in its open position, and means for rotating the rod to swing the hook of the shank laterally to disengage the hook carried by the shutter.
