intacta Specification of Letters Patent.
rasantes sept. a', iai-5.
i' Application filed February 13, 19M. Serial No; Sl.
i To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, FELIX GoT'rscHALK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stirling, inthe county of Morris and State of New flei'sef/,have invented certain new and 4useful. Improvements in Fire-Alarm Systems, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to tire alarm systems,
wherein a telephone line and its associated apparatus is utilized in transmitting a characteristic signal from the 4premises protected 4to a distant point.
The objects of inyinvention are to eliminate the necessity of making electrical connections to the telephone line, or connect- `ing thereto or to the instrument, additional devices which couldin any Way affect the talking qualities of same. i
A further object is to provide a system 1n which simple fusible links may be employed,
which by melting,v so adect a circuit as to cause the operation ot the apparatus connected therew1th,wliich in turn actuates the telephone switch hook thereby closing the' telephone line circuit, -and thusenabling a characteristic signal, automatically pro.-
' duced, to be transmitted over the line.
There are other objects asliereinafter de-A scribed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is `a diagrammatic View otan electrically actuated device for releasing the telephone switch hook, and FigiQ, a diagram showing the circuit connections of the apparatus shown in Figfl.
Like figures of reference denote the same .parts Wherever shown.
l denotes anv ordinary telephone instrument of any type. For illustration a desk stand is shown.- Attached to the switch-y v hook 2 of the telephone is the case 3, containingactiiating mechanism connected by lever l to the hook, whereby the hook may be; released. The case contains a suitable release' mechanism 5 comprising an' armature connected to the member 4 and electromagncts for actuaiiingir the armature, a vibrating member, such as a buzzer 6, and a normally closed relay 7. The relay Z Vis connected to anl alarm circuit in series with one or more fuses 8 and a source of energy such as the rlliese fuses are adapted to melt latch, a circuit .including y a circuit, a device change its reslstancein the presence of ab-y in the presence of abnormal heat or rather to increase or decrease in resistance-so as tol correspondingly aHect the circuit. .As the naturev and construction of -such devices are Well known, l do not describe saine here.
In operation, should 8 be melted, relay 7 opens its contacts permitting energy to fioW` through the Winding of release mechanism 5 which operates, releasing the telephone hook switch 2. Current also flows through the device 6 which produces a distinctive tone giving any one who listens a distinctive lire signal.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
l. In an electric alarm system of the character described, the combination of a telephone having a .switch hook, a latch for holding said switch hook in its normal position, electrical -means for releasing said latch, a circuit including:r a source of energy, thermostatic circuit openers and a relay, and a circuit including normally open contacts on said relay, said source of energy and said electrical means.`
2. In an electric alarm system of the character described, the combination of atelephone having a switch hook, a latch for holding said switch hook in its normal po` sition, electrical means for releasing said a source of energy, thermostatic circuit openers and a relay, a
`circuit including normally open contacts on said relay, said source of energy and said electrical means, and a sound producing device controlled by said relay.
8. ln an electric alarm system of the-char'- acter described, the combination of a tele- 'phone having a switch hook, actuating means for said hook, electrically voperated means for controlling said actuating means, in said circuit, adapted to and said tone is transmitted over the teleyphone line, thereby
