To all whom. it may concern."
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS M. WING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of lllultnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typeriter Carriage-Returns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to typewritand more particularly to means for returning the'traveling member of the machine to its initial position after the completion of each line of printing.
Two classes of typewriters are ordinarily used, one having a cylindrical platen traveling longitudinally relative to the printing point, the other having a stationary platen on which the printing mechanism is mount ed to travel. The device forming the subject matter of this invention adapts itself readily for use on both types of machines, and in order to simplify the description, reference is made to the first named structure only.
The object of my invention is to provide means for operating and returning the carriage without removing the operatorshands from the keyboard, and thus save the time necessary with the presentdevices to operate the carriage by hand and return the hand to the keyboard upon. the completion of each printed line.
With. this object in view, my invention consists in certain combinations of elements to behereinaiter fully explained.
In order to fully comprehend my inven tion and the art to which it relates, reference is made to the following specification,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this application, of which.:-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention connected to a typewriter and desk;
Figs. 2 and 3 details of a modified form of bracket to be used in comiectionwith a machine having the spacing lever at the left of the platen; Fig. 4 is a perspective of the connecting means with the line space lever; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 6 is a front elevation of saline; 7 is a detail; Fig. 8 is a perspective of the rail structure and stop; Fig. 9 is a perspective of the traveling pedal; Fig. 10 is a lcngitudinal section through the tube and head; while Fig. 11 is a cover-for the head.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawing. The only part of the typewriter which is directly concerned is the line space lever, which in Fig. 1 is designated by the reference numeral 1. This lever is shown tioned on the right hand side of thetypewriter. In certain other machines this line space lever is mounted on the left side, but as it in all cases operates in substantially the same manner, no further mention of this well known mechanism is thought necessary.
The typewriter desk 2 to which is rigidly secured a tubular column 3. Below the table, and in continued alinement with said column is a tube 4 containing a second tube 13, said tube 4 terminating in a chamber 5. A flexible member 6 is by means of a bifurcated hook 7,. attached to clamp 8, which fastens to line space lever 1. Said flexible member passes through the tubular column 3 and the tube 13 to a weight 9 in tube 13. The tubular column 3 terminates at the top in a iollow head .10, in which a grooved wheel 11 is rotatably fixed on pin 12. The innertube 13 inserted into tube ihas attached thereto a threaded th'imble 14 at its upper end (to engage the weight 9 and thus operate the carriage through flexible member 6) and guides l415 of approximately the inside diameter of tube 4:. A helical spring 16 encircles tube 13 below guide 14: and passes the full distance intermediate said guide and shoulder 17 of projection 18 on chamber A flexible member 19 passes from the lower end of tube 13 downwardly and contacts with sheave 20 which is revolubly mounted in chamber 5. A slot 22 is cut in said chamber to allow the chain to pass without said chamber in order that the free end of said chain may be attached'to hook 23 of traveling pedal 24 which moves horizontallyon tracks 25; said tracks being constructed in tiis instance of longitudinal rods which are fastened atone end by a spreader 26 and at the reverse end by atransverse rod 27 which is supported by lugs which fit into'slots 28 in casting 30.
Attached to frame 31 is an angle-plate 31" to the horizontal leg-0f which casting 30 is is placed on an ordinary securely and rigidly attached, while at the opposite end-of said angle-plate a small-Iver tical pin is secured adapted to engage a hole in strap 33 attached to spreader 26, which thus rests upon the floor in front of the desk and immediately below and at the right of the operator, so that the foot pedal 24 is.

The toot of the operator'then moves pedal 24: long tudinally of tracks in a direction awhy'from the operator or rearwardly of the desk. Thismotion of pedal 24;by means of flexible member 19 draws tube 13 downwardly into tube 4, and when thimble 14 is thus brought into contact with the upper end of weight 9, the flexible member 6 attached to I saidj-:-=weight is thus drawn downwardly and. substitutes that may be fairly c0nsidthrough tubular column 3, and thus the carriage is moved toward the right, and re-' turned to its initial position as regards the typewriter.
It will be not-ed that pedal 24 is mounted ontracks 25 byjv'heels 32,;andHfurther that a. stop-spring isattach'editb angle-plate said angle platebingfastened to strip 33 and serves tofljirriit the backward movement of pedal 24, which is brought to said position by the extension of spring 16, which was compressed during the operation of returning the carriage.
To aid in assembling my invention a removable cover 37 is placed on chamber5 and secured thereto by nut 38 which screws to the bearing pin 38 of sheave :20, which pin is rigidly secured to the vertical leg of angle plate 31. Chamber 5 with its attached tube 4 and the contents thereof is freely mounted upon pin 38, so that the removal of 'nut 3Senables the entire structure, consisting of chamber 5 and tube 4 with its contents to be removed for inspection or repairs. A small clip 39 is secured to frame 31, and its outwardly extending end 39 bent into a portion of a circle to partially surround tube i and thus-hold the same vertically and in alinement with tubular column 3 when in use, and prevent the structure from rotating about pin 38.

In a device of the character described, a clamp secured to a line space lever, a bifurcated hook attached to said clamp, a tube attached to a type'writerdesk, a fixed tube attached below th.e.desk,.a vertically movable tube within saidj fixd tube, a flexible member attached to the bifurcated hook and passing downwardly to' a weight in the vertically movable tube, a chamber secured to the lower part of the fixed-tube, a flexible member fixed atone 'end 'to said vertically movable tube, means-attached to said flexible member at its free end without the chamber to operate the same, a spring within the fixed tube to bring said operating means back to its normal position, for the purposes set forth 2. In a device of the character described, a pair of telescopic tubes, a flexible member attached to a typewriter carriagev and passing downward into the inner. tube of said pair of telescopic tubes, a counterweight attached to said flexible member-within said inner tube, a flexible member attached to the inner tube and passing outside of the outer tube, and means to operate-said-flexible;

In a device of the character described, a pair of telescopic tubes, a flexible member attached to the lower end or" the inner tube and passing outside of the outer tube to a foot pedal, a counterweight within said inner tube, a flexible member attached to said counterweight and passing outside of said inner tube to a typewriter carriage substantially as described.
4. In a device of the character described, a pair of telescopic tubes. and means to connect the inner tube to a typewriter carriage and means'to connect the inner tube to a foot pedal. substantially as described.
