To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS F. VnRBnncK- Mons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anaconda, in the county of Deerlodge and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Watchcase-Crown, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in watch case crowns.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of watch case crowns and to provide a watch case crown adapted to be used in connection with any one of a plurality of crown posts in order that a crown post of the required size may be applied to the crown for the purpose of accommodating a stem of any desired size, according to the type of watch case containing the winding stem. It has been found by experience that repair work can be quickly accomplished by the use of crowns and crown posts of the character indicated, and that the stock required to be carried is comparatively small.

A further object of the invention is to provide a watch case crown equipped with means for adjustably connecting the crown post to the crown to adjust the winding stem upward or downward to its required length.

lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawing :-Figure 1 is an elevation of a winding stem provided with a crown post and crown constructed in accordance with this invention, the crown post and crown being in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the crown. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the crown post. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the crown. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the adjusting plug. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a set of crown posts having bores of different diameters.

illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a watch case crown provided in its underside with a recess 2- and having a threaded socket 3 extending upwardly from the recess 2 at the center of the top wall thereof. The socket 3 is adapted to receive the upper or outer portion of a crown post 1, provided at its upper or outer end with exterior screw threads 5 corresponding to the screw tb reads 6 of the socket 3 of the crown 1. The crown post, which is designed in practice to be constructed in sets or series, as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, is provided with a longitudinal bore extending entirely through the crown post and adapted to receive the threaded shank 8 of a Winding stem 9, whereby the crown is connected with the winding stem. The crown post is provided at its inner or lower end with opposite notches 10, adapted to receive a suitable tool for enabling the crown post to be screwed into the threaded socket of the crown. The upper end of the crown post is adapted to fit tightly against the top or end wall of the threaded socket to form a rigid connection between the crown and the crown post. The winding stem is reduced to form the shank 8 and provide a shoulder 11, which fits against the inner or lower end of the crown post to enable the winding stem and the crown post to be screwed into rigid relation.

As illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing, the bore of the crown post may be of any desired diameter to accommodate the size of the shank of the winding stem with which it is designed to be used, and a set of any desired number of crown posts may, of course, be employed. In order to enable the winding stem to be adjusted upwardly or downwardly to its required length, the crown post is equipped with an adjusting plug 12, provided with threads which correspond to the threads of the bore of the crown post to enable the plug to be adjustably mounted within the upper portion of the said post, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The plug, which is preferably rounded at its upper end 13, is provided at its lower end with a groove 14, adapted to receive the blade of a screw driver for turning the plug to adjust it to the required position. The plug is adapted to be arranged wholly within the upper or outer portion of the crown post and also to project to a greater or less extent beyond the said post. By adjusting the plug outwardly the winding stem is lowered and an inward adjustment of the plug will effect a raising of the winding stem. After the proper adjustment of the plug has been obtained, the crown post is anchored in the socket of the crown, which may be effected by the screw threads, soft solder, or any other suitable means.

By means of the construction shown and described, crown posts with bores of different diameters for the accommodation of the different sizes of shanks of the winding stems of various makes of watch cases may be used in connection with a crown by applying to the same a crown post of the required dimensions for the accommodation of the shank of the winding stem. Also, by carrying a stock of crown posts with bores of different diameters, repairs may be readily made on different types of watches, regardless of the size of the winding stems. Owing to the fact that a crown post of the required size may be easily and quickly fitted to a crown to adaptthe same to the different types and sizes of winding stems, the applicability and use of the invention in practice will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.

What is claimed is 1. The combination with a winding stem having a threaded shank and provided with a shoulder at the inner end thereof, of a watch case crown provided with a recess in its underside and having a threaded socket extending upwardly from the recess, a crown post exteriorly threaded at its upper or outer portion to screw into the threaded socket of the crown, said crown post being provided with a threaded bore of a diameter to receive the threaded shank of the winding stem, and a threaded plug also mounted within the threaded bore of the post and adapted to project therefrom to effect an adjustment of the crown and the post for raising and lowering the winding stem.

2. The combination of a watch case crown provided in its underside with a threaded socket, a crown post exteriorly threaded at one end to screw into the threaded socket of the crown, said crown post being provided with a threaded bore adapted to receive the threaded shank of a winding stem, and a threaded plug also mounted within the threaded bore of the post beyond the end of the winding stem, said crown being adapted to receive crown posts having bores of different diameters to enable a crown to be connected with stems of various sizes.
