Patented Sept; '7, 19151 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUGH E. MoLAUoH- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the borough of Bronx, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial-Stone Facing Slabs or Tiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the acco-mpanylng drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to improvements in tiles or slabs formed of concrete or other composition material to form the finish face or surface of brick, cement-block or hollow tile walls, of buildings.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for securing the facing tiles in place upon the building walls and the in vention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangement of parts, all as will be now described and the particular features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a face view of a slab or tile embodying the present invention with the fastening means in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a tile or slab attached to a wall. Fig. 3 is an end edge View of the tile in place on a wall. Fig. f is a similar view showing a different arrangement of the securing means.

Referring to the drawings A indicates a tile or slab of concrete or other composition, having embedded. therein a reinforcement wire B. An intermediate portion Z) of the reinforcement extends horizontally longitudinally of the slab and has its ends bent upwardly at right angles forming upright portions 1). said ends being then bent sub stantially at right angles to extend out through the inner face of the tile or slab for a suitable distance, as shown at 6 These free ends are bent downwardly forming hook-like portions 5 by which the facing tile is held in place upon the wall.
In securing the tiles or slabs in place on the wall the ends 72 are hooked behind orin the openings in the blocks of one course of the wall with the portion 6 resting on the top of the same so as to extend into the joint between the courses as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
The fasteners may project from the rear face of the tile at any points desired or pre ferred, but when it is desired that the joint between the courses of the building wall and of the facing tiles shall coincide, the fasteners should project from the tile at or near the top, as shown for example, in Fig. 4. In such case it would be undesirable to employ the form of fastener heretofore described, where the portion Z) extends straight up from the base portion 7), for this would bring the top of the portion 6 near the top of the slab or tile and be liable to break through the comparatively thin mass of material above and around the fastener. To overcome this difficulty the construction illustrated in Fig. i is adopted in which the portion 6 of the reinforcement is inclined at an angle and emerges at approximately the upper inner edge thus leaving a considerable mass of material in the slab over and around the upwardly and rearwardly extending portion of the fastener.
It is to be noted that the ends 6 of the fastener may be hooked in the interior of the wall or be carried through the entire thickness and hooked on the opposite side thereof. When hooked within the thickness of the wall the opposite face may be indicated by dotted lines Z, in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A facing tile or slab for the walls of buildings, having a reinforcement and fastener for securing the tile to the face of the wall formed of a single piece of wire, said wire extending horizontally longitudinally of the slab with its ends bent upwardly and then extended outwardly from the rear face of the tile, said rearwardly extended portion forming a support for the slab passing between the blocks of one course of the wall and resting on the top of the same, the free end of the wire being extended downward forming hook-like portions which are hooked behind the blocks.
2. A facing tile or slab for the walls of buildings having a reinforcement and fastener for securing the slab to the face of the wall formed from a single piece of wire,
said wire extending horizontally longitudinally of the'slab with its ends bent upwardly and inclined rearwardly of the slab, and then brought out substantially at right angles from the rear face of thevslab, form ing supports resting on the top of the blocks of one course of the Wall, and then bent 1 downwardly forming hookswhich take behind the blocks of one course.
