SHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Drummond, in the county of Lake and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stumpmay be readily moved from place to place as is desired by the operator.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of my stump-puller. Fig.
2 is a reduced side elevation of the power mechanism of the device. Fig. 3 is a reduced side elevation of the derrick element comprising a part of the stump-puller mechanism.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate similar parts, 1 represents a frame of rectangular shape which is made preferably of wood and of sufficiently strong construction to withstand the strain placed upon it in its operation. Upon each of the side beams comprising a part of the frame 1 aresecured metal straps 2 by means of bolts 3. The
straps 2 are designed to extend practically the entire length of the frame terminating at one end-in eye-bolts 4-4: which provide attaching means, whereby any manner of devise may be attached thereto for drawing the frame and its superimposed parts about when it is necessary to move the mechanism from place to place. These. eyes also form. a means for anchoring the mechanism which is further accomplished through themedium of the bail 31.
Beams 5 form a part of the frame 1 at one end thereof adjacent the eyes 1 and upon which any suitable form of engine 6 having a supply tank 7 is fastenedifThe' shaft 8 of the engine 6 is equipped at its end with a sprocket-wheel 9. At about the middle of the frame, a shaft 10 is suitably journaled on-eaeh of the side beams, having mounted upon one end a large sprocket wheel 11 which is designed to be rotated by Specification of Letters Ifatent.

the engine through the medium of a chain 12 which is actuated by the sprocket-wheel 9. A gear 13 is carried by the opposite end of the shaft 10. Another shaft 1% is mounted upon the opposite end of the frame from the engine and parallel withthe shaft 10, being journaled in the side beams of the frame. This shaft carries upon one end a large gear 15 which is designed to mesh with the gear 13 carried by the shaft 10. A suitable drum 16 is carried by the shaft 14 upon which a cable 17 may be wound in or paid out as is customary in such devices. There is also a suitable form of clutch, as 18, controlled by a lever 19 as is shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the winding mechanism of the stump-pulleris as follows: The engine being started, the sprocket wheel 9 will be revolved, revolving the sprocket-wheel 11 through the medium of the chain 12. The sprocket-wheel 11, being carried by the shaft 10, will revolve the shaft, transmitting this movement to the gear 13 thence to the shaft 14 through the medium of the gear-15. The
power may be coupledor uncoupled from the drum 16' through the clutch member 18, as is readily understood.
The other part of my improved stumppuller comprises an independently portable derrick element, which consists of a suitable base 20 upon which is pivotally mounted a mast 21 held in its upright position by means of inclined braces 22 upon each side thereof, which latter are also 'pivotally attached to the base at the point 33. A boom ispivotally mounted at the base of the mast 21 in such a manner that it may assume any position within a vertical plane in line with the mast 21. Any suitable. form of pulley 24 is attached at the top of the mast 21 through which the cable 17 passes; the end of which is attached to the boom 23. A ring 26 or any'such appliance is carried by the end of the boom 23 from which is suspended a pair of tongs 27, or any similar device providing a means for engaging the stump which it is desired to be pulled. At-
tention is called to the fact that when it is so desired, the cable 1"? may be attached to the top of the mast and the boom secured at a fixed position from the mast in such a relation thereto, that the derrick device will serve as a fulcrum between the power means and the stump. -Between the mast 21 and the supports 22, two wheels 28 are mounted 5 mast21 over backward, whereupon the derrick will ride upon the wheels 28 in the manner of atruck The winding or power mechanism of my device is also equipped so that it may be moved about by means of wheels 29 which are mounted within supports 30. The supports 30 are pivotally attached to the frame '1 of the apparatus by means'of bolts 32 which are off-set from the center line of the wheels a suflicient distance to afford the wheels a caster-like motion upon the frame. The advantage of this caster-like automatically adjustable support for the winding mechanism is very apparent when it is considered ho'w varied the direction of draft is upon a deviceof this character'and the necessity of having the winding mechanism directly in alinement with the line of draft.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have devised a stump-puller which comprises an improved winding mechanism and an improved pulling mechanism both of which are independently portable.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
A stump'pulling device of the character described comprising a derrick having a mast and boom, a base upon which the mast and boom are mounted, braces extending from the base to the sides of the mast and supporting the mast laterally, and wheels mounted upon the mast above the ground and intermediate the braces and the mast whereby the derrick may be lowered to rest upon said wheels and be transported thereupon.
