Be it known that I, ANDREW H. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medina, in the county of Medina and State Aof Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Distributing-Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in distributing nozzles, the present embodiment being particularly designed and adapted for use in connection with sewage disposal plants in which the nozzles are arranged at intervals over the ltration bed the sewage being dispersed upwardly and outwardly or radially, by the nozzle as it passes through the same from the riser pipe. These nozzles are liable to become clogged up by the solid matter of the sewage and'it is necessary from time to time to remofe the obstructions in order to have the sewage plant operate to its full capacity.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved nozzle or distributing device of exceedingly simple, cheap, and efficient construction, having its parts so arranged and disposed relative to each other as to permit the parts to be readily adjusted to meet the varying demands lof actual service.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a filtration nozzle of this class having an improved removably mounted nozzle head bearing a spring resisted adjustably mounted spreader member, the latter with its connection being removably mounted within the main body portion of the distributing nozzle, or at the upper end of the riser pipe. y
A still further object is the provision of an improved sewage distributing nozzle which., through its various adjustments, may be conformed to the demands of yactual service in the various sewage disposal plants and more particularly one having a spreader head which, through its adjustably mounted tension spring will automatically adjust itself to varying liquid pressures, within certain predetermined limits, as in day and night service and the like.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists inthe novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one o f its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l, is a vertical sectional view of the improved distributing nozzle, in'its operative position, applied to a risen pipe, the spreader member being shown in its closed position. Fig. 2, a similar view, partly in side elevation showing the manner in which the nozzle head and the improved adjustably mounted spreader member and its connections may be removed for cleaning out, or for adjustment or repair. Fig. 3, a side elevation of the improved nozzle head. Fig. 4, a cross sectional view taken through line 4 4 of Fig. l. Fig. 5, a top plan view of the improved nozzle head, the improved spreader member being removed.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved nozzle comprises a main body portion of the tubular section 1, adapted to be disposed in a vertical position in and to project slightly above the filtration bed 2, and to be removably mounted and connected to the riser pipe 3, said tubular section, in the present instance, being threaded at its lower end to thread into the upper end of the riser pipe 3. The tubular member or section l, is threaded at its upper end and is provided with a threaded cap orv nozzle head 4', the latter being provided with a centrally located outwardly flaring or beveled nozzle opening 4a, adapted to be controlled or regulated by means of a conical shaped spreader member 5. The spreader member 5, projects upwardly above the nozzle head 4, and is adapted to be seated in and to control the liquid issuing from the nozzle opening.
The spreader member 5, is connected to a guide rod or stem 6, slidably mounted and vertically movable in a tubular guide sleeve 7, which guide sleeve is adjustably mounted and secured, in the present instance, by
means of a set of four adjusting `screws 8,
movably mounted in the main or outer tubu llar section 1.
When the improved nozzle is in operation, the upward movement of the conical shaped spreader member 5, is cushioned and adjusted through the medium vof a spring 10, at
the lower end ofthe stem 6, said spring 10, being interposed between the lower end of the tubular guide member 7, and adjusting and lock nuts 1 1, adjustably threaded upon the lower end of the guide stem 6. Should any foreign matter or substances get into the nozzle opening 4a, or should it be desired to clean the nozzle or to remove the .parts for inspectionor repair, the head cap or nozzle head 4;, may be readily unscrewed and as the nozzle head is lifted it will carry with it the stem 6, and tubular guide sleeves 7, together with the supplemental or inner tubular section 9, as shown in F ig. 2, so that all these various inner parts may be cleaned or adjusted or repaired, as desired. The two sets of adjusting screws 8, at the top andy bottom, respectively, of the innertubular section 9, enable the guide sleeve. 7, and guide stem 6, to be readily adjusted and thus to perf ctly centralize or adjust the spreader member 5, in accordance with requirements, thus insuring an even and uniform distribution of the liquid material from the nozzle opening 4a, this adjustment being a partic-l ular advantage inthe event of the main tubular section 1, not being disposed in or getting out of an exact or true vertical position, or in the event of the liquid pressure being somewhat unequal at the nozzle opening 4a. The lower end of the inner tubular section 9, in the present instance, is rested on stop or supporting screws 12, extending through the lower end of the tubular section 1.
By reason of the above described construction and the various adjustable features thereof, it. will be apparent that the, parts may be readily adjusted `to conform to the varying demands of actual service, and that the spreader member 5, may be readily adjusted and its sensitiveness regulated through the medium of the adjusting nuts 11, which latter also act to adjust the tension upon the spring 10, so that the spreaderv wardly flaring nozzle opening, a conical shaped spreader member projecting above and adapted to control said opening, a guide stem connected to said spreader member, a removable inner tubular section carrying an adjustably mounted guide sleeve surrounding said guide stem, a spring surrounding said guide stem and abutting against said guide sleeve, and means for adjusting the tension of said spring.
2. A distributing nozzle, comprising a pipe section, an internally threaded removable nozzle head mounted on the pipe section and provided with an outwardly fiaring nozzle opening, a vertical mevable spreader member seated in .and projecting above said nozzle opening and provided with a guide stem extending into said pipe section, an independent supporting section v separate from said nozzle head and provided with a guide sleeve surrounding said guide stem and removable with the latter when said nozzle head and spreader member are removed, adjusting means at the lower end of said guide stem, and a spring interposed between said adjusting means and the lower end of said guide sleeve.
3. In a distributing nozzle, a pipe section, a removable nozzle provided with an-outwardly flaring nozzle opening, an upwardly projecting conical spreader seated in and over hanging said nozzle opening, a supporting section removably mounted in said pipe section, a guide stem vertically movable 1n said supporting section and connected to said spreader member, means carried by said supporting section for adjusting an centralizing said spreader member relative to Y said nozzle opening, and means for removably securing and cushioning said guide stem in said supporting section.

In a distributing nozzle, a pipe section, an internally threaded removable nozzle head detachably connected therewith and provided with an outwardly Haring nozzle opening, a conical shaped spreader member mounted in said opening, a guide stem carried by said spreader member, a separate supporting section within said pipev section and surrounding and guiding said guide stem and being removable with the latter when said nozzle head and spreader member are removed, and means for removably se curing and cushioning said guide stem in said supporting section.
5. In a distributing nozzle, a tubular section, anozzle head detachablyandremovably mounted on the outside of said tubular section and provided with an outwardly flaring nozzle opening, a conical shaped 11,152,22 y will spreader member projecting above and adapted to control said nozzle opening, a guide stem connected to and carried by said spreader member, a separate independent inner section surroundingsaid guide stem and removable with and carried by the latter when said nozzle head and spreader member are removed from said tubular section, a spring surroundlng sald gu1de stem and abutting against said removable inner sectlon, and means on sald gulde stem below said spring for adjusting the tension of the latter and for removably securing said guide stem and spreader member independently of said nozzle head.
