Be it known that I, WVINrnED MUDGE Bnoons, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of East Orange, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shackle Two sheets of drawings accompany this,

Referring to the drawings, a represents the shackle, (Z and d longitudinal easing grooves located near the ends of the shackle and adapted to coincide when said ends are brought together and form a casing for the locking end or ends of the locking device, 0 and 0 represent holes located at the ends of the casing grooves through which the parts of the locking member pass, 6 is the crown of the locking member, m represents the locking ends of same and n a modified form of m adapted to secure the locking device to one shackle end preliminary to leaving the factory and o transverse notches cut in the inner side of the locking member at points of proposed bending, c and a represent stifiening grooves in the shackle ends and e in Figs. 2 and 3 represent weakening holes to prevent bending and unbending of shackle ends, 79 in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 represents transverse grooves in the shackle ends adapted to coincide and prevent longitudinal displacement of said ends after locking, and 39 in Figs. 21 to 32 represents a hump in the locking end of the locking device adapted to prevent the withdrawal of the shackle end after sealing by such a displacement. The shackle end is shown bent up for a similar purpose at 79 in Figs. 25 and 26. In Figs. 36 and 37 the nailused for the locking member is swaged on as shown at a in Fig. 38. The weakening holes 6 shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the transverse grooves 72 in the shackle ends as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 and the humps p? in the locking member shown in Figs. 24 to 32 are adapted to be used in each of the various species shown or may all be combined in one seal as desired,
The invention consists essentially in sealing together the ends of a flat shackle seal, suitably stiffened, by means of a simple loop of wire nicked at the points of bending upon its inner side and capable of being bent in one direction only, viz: toward said nicks, without breaking. A suitable casing groove is provided to receive the locking ends of the loop and protect same from accidental displacement after sealing.
The seal as it leaves the factory consists of a flat shackle having the'sealing member aflixed to one end by a nicked and bent end as shown in, Figs. -1, 5,. 21 and at, by a head and bur as shown-in Fig. 3801* by merely having the fastening ends forced through the appropriate holes in one shackle end as in Fig. 18.

The two shackle ends are then brought together closely, the stiiiening and easing grooves 0, 0 andd, cl and the cross grooves 72 where used, all coinciding and allowing for a snug close union of the two ends. ,Thelocking member m is then bent down at and toward the notch in its face and pressed home in the casing cl. In the type shown-1n Fig. 18 where there are two locking endsm the operation is similar with regard to. each. In the type shown in Figs. 34 and 35 the lockingmember m is provided with a series of notches o its side ,toward WlllCl] it is turned transversely of the shackle ends forming a locking coil with said notches on its inner side.
"Any attempt to unfasten the shackle ends by unbending'the sealing memberwill result in the fracture of the latter at itstransverse notches with. resulting disclosure.
Boththe crown and the ends of the locking members can be flattened and suitably emshackle having longitudinal :grooves,..long1tud1nal casing grooves near bossed, a desirable system being to provide .both the shackle and the sealing member withthe sameserial number, thus prevent ing substitution. '7

Havingv thus fully described my invention I claim:
1. A ,seal having in combination, a flat stifiemng the endsthereof, a locking member attached to one end ofsaid' shackle' having transverse notches atfthe-pointsiof proposed bending, whole or holes near the end of thejother end Jof saidshackle adapted to receive the looking member, all substantially as hereinbefore set forth;
2. Alseal having" in combination a flat transverse nicks on its inner side disposed at points of proposed bending, means for securing said loop to one shackle end, holes in the other shackle end adjacent to the locking ends of said loop and adapted to permit the passage of said ends and means for preventing the accidental disturbance of said locking ends after sealing.
8. A seal having in combination a fiat shackle, a wire sealing member having transverse nicks on its inner side disposed at points of proposed bending, means for securing said sealing member to one shackle end, a hole in the other shackle end adapted to permit the passage of the end of the sealing member, longitudinal grooves in the shackle ends adapted to coincide and form acasing for the sealing member after it is bent down and transverse grooves crossing said casing grooves in the shackle ends, also adapted to interlock and prevent longitudinal displacement of the shackle ends, after sealing.
4;. A seal having in combination a flat shackle, longitudinal stiffening and easing grooves near the ends thereof, the grooves on one end being adapted to interlock with those on the other upon the two ends being brought together, a sealing member having a flattened and embossed head and two locking members bent at right angles to said head, transverse nicks 011 the inner sides of said bends, holes in the shackle ends adapted to receive the locking members, weakening holes in the stiffening grooves and means to prevent the longitudinal displacement of the shackle ends after sealing.
