CARL MARTIN SIME, OF GRIEBROK, MINNESOTA.
SPEED-REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL MARTIN SIME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Griebrok, in the county of Polk and'State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Speed-Regulators, which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to speed regulators for motor vehicles, the object in view being to provide means operating with certainty to cut-down the flow of fuel to the engine when the vehicle reaches a certain predetermined speed.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the point at which the regulating device becomes effective may .be adjusted to suit the desire of the operator of the vehicle or the traiiic regulations. lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts,
as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 isa vertical longitudinal section through the casing of the speed regulator, showing the contained mechanism, and showing the relation of the parts to the gasolene feed line pipe of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the connection between the governor and cut-off valve of the feed line pipe, showing the means for adjusting the projection thereon.
In the preferred embodiment of this invention I employ an inclosing box or case 1 of suitable dimensions and preferably of metal, the same being provided with a door 2 to give access to the mechanism contained therein.
lVithin the box or case 1 I arrange a centrifugal governor comprising a rotary shaft 3 provided with a gear wheel 4 which receives motion from another gear wheel 5 on a shaft (3 which may be conveniently driven from one of the axles or wheels of the machine so that the shaft 6 .and consequently the shaft 3 revolves at a speed proportionate to the speed at which the vehicle is moving.
The shaft 3 is journaled in suitable bearings within the box or case 1 and is provided with a collar 7 fast thereon to which are connected the adjacent ends of a pair of flexible spring bows 8 carrying weights 9 adjacent to t ent reof and having their opposite ends connected to a collar 10 which is slidable lengthwise on the shaft 3 as the weights 9 move outwardly and inwardly.
l1 designates an auxiliary coiled spring 'which encircles the shaft 3 between the fixed collar 7 and the slidable collar 10.
Connected to the slidable collar 10 and The rod 14 extends through an opening in the end of the box or case 1 where it is connected to a lever arm 16 on the stem of a cut-off valve 17 which controls the gasolene feed line pipe 18 which extends from the gasolene supply tank to the engine.
In connection with the rod 14 and projection 13 I employ a graduated scale 19 which is shown as graduated in miles per hour the graduations being so arranged that when, for example, the projection 13 is adjusted opposite the graduation designating 20 miles per hour, at such point the centrifugal governor will have moved the collar 12 a sufficient distance to come in contact with the projection 13 whereupon the cut-off valve 17 will begin to close thereby cutting down the supply of gasolene and throttling or starving the engine. As soonv as the speed of the machine falls below the point set, the cutoff valve 17 starts to open, a
suitable opening spring being employed for that purpose. From the foregoing description it will now be seen that the owner of the car may set the regulator to cut down the supply of gasolene at any predetermined speed of the vehicle and if desired he may set the regulater so that it will not permit the machine to make any appreciable headway thus preventing unauthorized persons from starting and driving the machine. He may also set the regulator in accordance with the trafiic regulations sothat he may not exceed the speed limit.
While I have shown mechanical means for opening and closing the cut-off valve 17, it will be understood that electrical appliances maybe used for the same purpose, such eleca rotary disk which acts on saidjroll'er, an mdioatmg pointer-on said rod, and'fa 'gradw altrfid scale over which said pointeris'moV- a e. '1
In testimony whereof I afiix in presence of two witnesses.
CARL MARTIN SIME.
