Application flied April 7, 1915. Serial No. 19,691.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN D. Bonanonn, a citizen of the United States, and temdent of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Side-Hill Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to adjustable sidehill wagons and the objects of my invention are to provide a side-hill wagon, 1st, in which the load can always be kept in equilibrium; 2nd, in which said state of equilibrium can be secured and mamtalned by a simple and easily manually operated mechanism; 3rd, in which the wheels will constantly remain vertical while said load is kept in equilibrium; 4th, to provide a manually operated means by which the load carrying frame may be steadied and braced on the front bed-piece.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in which similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the frame of the wagon carried upon front bolster 2 and rear bolster 3. Front bolster 2 has its under side curved as shown at 4 and rests upon a double bed-piece 5. Bolster 2 has a vertical, longitudinal slot formed therein, as 6, in which is pivotally mounted a rocker 7 ,the shaft for said rocker 7 projecting forward a distance as at 8 and having an operating bar as 9 secured to the forward end thereof. Bed-piece 5 is formed of two pieces of suitable material spaced apart and connected by bolts 10 and 11 respectively and by a top piece 12 in which is secured the segmental support 13. Pivoted on bolts 10 and 11 are axles 14 and 15 respectively, upon which are mounted their respective wheels 16 and 17. On the inner ends of axles 14 and 15 are formed arcuate racks 18 and 19 respectively, adapted to engage pinion 20 which is secured to shaft 21 revolubly mounted in the center of double bed-piece 5 and passing therethrough.
Rear bolster 3 is beveled on its under side as shown at 22 and rests upon double bedp1ece23. Between the two sides of double bed-piece 23 are pivoted axles 24 and 25 respectively by their respective bolts 26 and 27 and having their respective wheels 28 and 29 mounted thereon. On the inner ends of axles24 and 25 are formed arcuate racks 39 and 31 respectively, adapted to engage pinion 32 secured to shaft 21 revolublv mounted in double bed-piece 23 and passing therethrough, and having sprocket 33 secured to the rear end thereof. A lever as 34 is pivotally mounted between the sides of double bed-piece 23 by bolt 35 and has its inner end connected to the inner end of axle 24 by link :36, and its outer end connected to one end of bolster 3 by link 37. Another lever 38 is pivotally mounted between the sides of bed-piece 23 by bolt 39 and has its inner end connected to the inner end of axle 25 by link 40 and its outer end connected to one end of bolster 3 by link 41.
Secured to the rear side of bolster 2 and bed-piece 5 are bearings 42 and 43 respectively in which king-bolt 44 is positioned, the forward end of reach-bar 45 being held in position by said king-bolt 44. The hole in bearing 42 is widened at its upper end as shown at 46 to permit the adjustment of bolster 2 while king-bolt 44 is in position. Secured to the forward side of bolster 3 and bedpiece 23 are bearings 46 and 47 respectively in which king-bolt 48 is positioned, the rear end of reach-bar 45 being held in position by said king-bolt 48. The hole in bearing 46 is widened at its upper end to permit the adjustment of bolster 3 while king-bolt 48 is in position.
A shaft 49 is revolubly mounted in the forward end of frame 1 and in bearing 50 secured to the upper surface of bolster 3. To the rear end of shaft 49 is secured sprocket 51 which is connected by chain 52 to sprocket 33. To the forward end of shaft 49 is secured spur gear 53 which is operated by worm gear 54 secured to vertical shaft 55. Vertical-shaft 55 passes through the top bar 56 of frame 57 which is mounted on the forward end of frame 1; said vertical shaft 55 has a wheel 58 secured to the upper end thereof having a handle 59 attached thereto.

As shaft 21 revolves pinion 32 operates racks 30 and 31 and thus keeps 24 and 25 level and wheels 28 and 29 in a vertical osition. Pinion 21 revolving at the same time operates racks 18 and 19 axles 14 and 15 level and wheels 16 and 17 in a vertical position. Levers 34 and 38, with theirrespective links, are so proportioned as 'to constantly maintain rack 1 in a horizontal position while wheels 28 andv 16 are raised as shown. If Wheels 29 and 17 are raised, then the action of the parts is exactly the same but in the opposite direction. In order to steady rack double bed-piece 5,

While Ihave shown and described in detail one method of securing the desired result, I do not Wish to confine myself to the particular details shown and described as they may be varied in many ways without de arting fro the spirit of my invention. aving 'thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A side-hill wagon comprising a frame, adjustable bolsters u on which said frame is secured, front an rear bed-pieces upon which said bolsters are adjusted, and mechanism for adjusting said bolsters in such a manner .as to keep the frame thereon in perpendicular relation to the wheels of said wagon, said mechanism comprising a shaft rotatably mounted in said bed-pieces and having. a universal joint positioned in-the forward portion thereof, manually operated means for rotating said shaft, a pinion se- 60, in shaft 21,

2. In a side-hill wagon, a bed-piece, abolster adjustably positioned on said bed-piece,
and mechanism for adjusting said bolster, said mechanism comprising a pinion revolubly mounted on said bed-piece, manually operated mechanism for operating said pinion, an axle havin a wheel mounted thereon pivotally mounte near one end of said bedpiece and having an a second axle having a wheel mounted thereon pivotally mounted near the other end of said bed-piece and having an arcuate rack formed on its inner end adapted to engage said pinion, said racks being so connected to said pinion as to move equally and in opposite directions when said pinion is revolved, and a pair of oppositely disposed arms pivotally mounted on said bed-piece, each of said arms having one end thereof connected by a link to the inner end of the adjacent axle and the other end thereofconnected by a link to the adjacent end of said bolster.
