To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLIAIVI F. ENGEL- MANN, a S'LlbjGChOf the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retouching-Pencils; and I do hereby ceclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to retouching pencils especially designed for retouching negatives in photographic work although it is not necessarily limited to such use.
The invention has for its object to provide a retouching pencil adapted to be connected with a suitable motor for operating the point of the pencil.
Another object is the provision of means whereby the extent of the movement of the pencil may be quickly and easily varied as desired.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel construction,
arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in'the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the pencil attached to a drive shaft. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view through the pencil. Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 represents an enlarged detail sectional view through the pencil holder. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 represents a transverse sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates a hollow shaft having a concentric bore 11 at one end communicating with an eccentric bore 12 at the opposite end. The shaft 10 is formed at one end with longitudinal slots 13 and at the opposite end with screwthreadson which is fitted a nut 14. A handle 15 is rotatably mounted on the hollow shaft 10 and is secured against longitudinal movement thereon by the nut 14: and the nuts 16 engaged against the opposite end thereof. A cylindrical holder 17 is frictionally engaged within the eccentric portion 12 of the bore of the shaft 10 and the outer extremity thereof is formed with a plurality of inwardly directed slits 18 dividing the holder into a plurality of spring tongues 19 adapted to be clamped against the lead pencil 20 to secure the latter in adj usted position by a sleeve 21 threaded upon the body of the holder 17 and having the reduced outer end 22 adapted to engage the beveled ends of the spring fingers 19. The bore through the body of the holder 17 re- .ceiving the lead pencil 20 is eccentric, as
clearly illustrated in Fig. 9.
A pair of screws 23 are adjustably secured within a housing 2% and project through the longitudinal slots 13 of the hollow shaft 10. The inner ends of screws 23 are pointed and are pivotally mounted in diametrically opposed and inwardly tapered recesses formed in a ball 25, the latter being slidably and snugly fitted within the concentric bore 11 of the hollow shaft 10. The housing 24: is reduced in diameter, as indicated at 25, and one end of a connecting rod 26 is secured in said reduced end by a locking key, or the like, 27.
The opposite end of the connecting rod 26 is secured by a pin 28 in the reduced end 29 of one part 30 of a universal joint including a pair of parallel spaced ears 31 having threaded apertures therein receiving screws 32 having their inner ends tapered. The other part 33 of the joint is provided with a pair of parallel spaced ears 3%: having threaded apertures therethrough receiving screws 35 also having their inner ends tapered. The inner pointed or tapered ends of the screws 32 and 35 are pivotally mounted in recesses formed in the periphery of a disk 36 pivotally connecting the parts 33 and 29 of the joint. The part 33 is formed with a socket adapted to receive the end 37 of a drive shaft, which is suitably secured in said socket by a pin, or the like, 38.
In use, the shaft 37 is operated by a suitable motor and rotates the hollow shaft 10 through the rod 26 and joints at the ends thereof. As the point of the lead pencil 20 is rotated it is caused to travel in a circular path by virtue of the eccentric mounting Within the holder 17 and the hollow shaft 10. The diameter of the circles described by the point of the pencils may be varied as desired by adjusting the holder 17 Within the eccentric bore 12 of the hollow shaft 10.
What I claim is 1. A retouching pencil holder comprising a handle, a shaft rotatably mounted therein, and a pencil holder eccentrically secured Within said shaft and having a longitudinal bore.
2. A retouching pencil holder comprising a handle, a shaft rotatably mounted in said. handle having an eccentric bore, and a lead pencil holder adjustably positioned Within said eccentric bore and having an eccentric pencil receiving bore.
' 3. A retouching pencil holder comprising a hollow handle, a shaft rotatably mounted in said handle having an eccentric bore therethrough, and a holder adjustably positioned Within said eccentric bore and having an eccentric pencil receiving bore.
A. A retouching pencil holder comprising a hollow handle, a shaft rotatably mounted in said handle having an eccentric bore in one end thereof, a holder positioned in said eccentric bore and having an eccentric bore, and jointed and extensible driving connections for said hollow shaft.
5. A retouching pencil holder comprising a handle, a shaft rotatably mounted therein, and a pencil holder eccentrically secured Within said shaft.
6. A retouching pencil holder comprising a handle, a shaft rotatably mounted therein having an eccentric bore therethrough, and a pencil holder adjustably positioned Within said eccentric bore and having a longitudinal pencil receiving bore.
