Description

H- W. STEEGE.
LITTER CARRIER.
APPLICATION FILED APR.19, 191s.

ttorney. I
HENRY W. STEEGE, 0F WESTGATE, IOWA.
LITTER-CARRIER.
Application filed April 19, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HnNRr S'rnnon, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of lVestgate, Fayette county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Litter-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to in'iprovements in litter-carriers, and the object of my improvement is to provide for the carriage of a suspended traveling carrier oppositely-lo cated breaking-means adapted for alternate use as desired.
This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the ac companying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation'of a suspended litter-carrier, equipped with my improved braking-means. Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged details views of a carrying-Wheel of said carrier, showing the pivotally-mounted brakemember in different positions relative thereto, and Fig. 4: is a like view of the opposite side of said wheel with dotted lines indicating the same positions of the brake-member.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several news.
The numeral 8 denotes a part of a cable on which carrying-wheels 1 are mounted to travel. Said wheels have depending hangers 2 hung on the ends of their shafts 7, said hangers fixedly supporting a tubular structure or frame 9 with downturned ends, between which a tiltable tub or reeptacle 10 is mounted. Any form of carria-ge movable long a cable or rail, or any kind of receptacle and intermediate supporting connecting structures may be employed other than those shown, without departing from or affecting the use of my invention.
My improvement consists in providing the brake-member 3 for each of the wheels 1, having one end pivoted on a stud 4 projecting from a hanger 2 above and to one side of the pivot-shaft 7. Each brake-member is a short bar having its outer end 6 bent at a right angle to overlie the circumferential edge of said wheel. On account of the ec- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 24, 1915.
Serial No. 22,319.
centric pivoting of said brake-bar, its angular part 6 will only be in frictional contact with the edge of the wheel 1 when swung up and over the wheel as shown in Fig. 2. When in other positions, the part 6 is spaced more or less from the edge of the wheel, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4. The stop-projection 5 on the hanger 2, limits the downward swing of said bar 3,to prevent its part 6 from contacting with the edge of the wheel when in the lowered position shown in Figs. 3 and 4c.
The brake-bars 3 are pivoted to swing away from each other when swung to engage their respective wheels, but in practice, it is unnecessary to move more than one of the bars at a time, for they are used alternately at opposite ends of a cable-way, by merely swinging them up singly to the position shown in Fig. 2, thus causing the carriage to be stationary on the supporting body.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A cable or way, a wheel mounted to roll therealong, a hanger to which said wheel is pivoted, a brake-member pivoted to said hanger eccentrically relative to said wheel and having a part angularly extended over the wheel tread to contact therewith frictionally when swung in one direction, and' stop on said hanger adapted to limit the extent of opposite movement of said member and keep it out of contact with the wheel tread at other locations than first above mentioned.
2. A cable or way, a wheel mounted to roll therealong, a housing in which said wheel is pivotally mounted, a brake-member movably supported on said housing and adapted to contact with said wheel frictionally when moved in one direction, and means adapted to limit the extent of opposite movement of said brake-member to keep it out of contact of said wheel at other locations.
Signed at lVestgate, Iowa, this 2nd day of April 1915.
