Description

W. F. BOCKHOFF. SIGHT FEED mm.
' APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1| {91" L 1,150,988. Patented Aug. 24, 1915.
llillllllllllllll srAfrnsr-A orion.
WILLIAM BOCKHOFF, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL AUTOMATIC COMPANY, OFMRICHMOND, INDIANA, A CORPORATION F INDIANA.
' SIGHT-FEED oILEn.
ing at Richmond, in the county of Vayne and State of Indiana, ha'veinvented a new and useful Sight-Feed Oiler, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my lnvention to provide a sight oil feed for attachment to machines,
especially in a factory, which will enable the foreman in looking over his shop to tell at a glance if any machine is notl getting the proper amount of oil; and to provide an improved construction of 4sight oil feed for forced oil lubrication systems.
In carrying out` my invention, I provide two tubes one within the other, the outer one being transparent, andthe inner one being perforated near the top and supplied with 'oil at the bottom so that the oil is forced out through such perforations into the space between the two tubes, whence it passes down to the partstoY be lubricated, this device being located at the top of the machine so that it is readily and immediately visible by the foreman from any part of the shop in which Athe machine is located.
The accompanying drawingsillustrate my invention.
Figure 1 1s a sectional view showlng a jfragment of a lmachine provided vwith a forced oil feed and having my sight oilfeed in proper position at the top; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the sight oil feed, per se.
W'ithin the machine frame 10 is located whatever gearing 11 is necessary for the particular type of machine, this being here shown as a multiple drill. Vertically through this machine entends 'a tube l2, which is supplied by 'a pipe 13 and a pump 1l with oil from a reservoir 15 at the bottom of the machine, such pump beingl of any desired type and shown as having a driving shaft 16 to which may be clutched a driving pulley 19 normally loose on such shaft, the shaft 16 also being connected throingh change speed gearing 1.7 tothe driven parts of the machine, such as thev drill.
The upper lend ofthe tube 12is provided with a stepped recess to receive a metal tube 20 and a larger transparent glass tube 21 concentric with and spaced from each other, the metal tube 20 being provided with lower and upper screw threaded ends 22 and 23 the Specication of Letters Patent.

Appucatipn mea June 1,1914. 'serial no. 842,074.
`so lthat the boresof the tubes 12 and 20 are in alinement, Vand the lower end of the tube v21 resting. on a cork or other suitable washer 2.4. 'On the 4upper ,threaded end 23 of the tube 20 is screwed a cap 25, which fits over the upper end of the tube 21, a suitable cork or other washer being interposed between the cap and the end of the tube 21. The cap 25, is provided with a removable plug 27 at its top, this plug when removed providing an aperture for priming the pump 14. The tube 20 is provided near its 'upper end with a plurality of holes 28, through which oil pumped by the pump 1l may escape from the tube 2O intothe spacef29 between the tubes 20 and 21. This space 29 extends down into the upperend of the tube 12, where it communicates with lateral passages 30 through such tube, the passages 30 in turn leading into a circumferential.passage 31 on the tube 12, from which circumferential passage 31 any desired number of passages 32, suitably formed in the frame 10, lead to the various parts to be' lubricated.v If the tube 12 itselfserves as a bearing for gears, as in the arrangement shown, the circumferential passage 31 communicates with the bearing surface of such tube so that oil may pass from such circumferential passage to such bearing surface.
.In operation, the pump 14 is driven when the'machine is in operation, and pumps oil through the pipe 13 and tube 12 into the tube 20, whence the oil escapes through the holes 28 into the space 29, passing thence through the passages 30 -to the circumferential passage 31 from which it passes either directly or'by the ypassages 32 to the bear ing surfaces to be lubricated. The passage of the oil through the space 29 is visible at a glance, and in 'shops where there are a number of similar machines the foreman is able to tell at any time how the various machines under his control vare being lubricated, 'and can give such ordersas may be necessary. In case of necessity, the pumps 14 can' be primed by first removing the plugs 27. The excess of oil returns by way of the pipe 35 to the reservoir 15. f
- I claim as my invention: l
1. A sight feed'oiler, comprising a tube having screw threaded ends, a member in which one end of said tube is mounted, said noj ' and bears against the end Aof said transparmember' Vhaving an opening communicating with said tube, a transparent tube lsurrounding and lspaced' from s aid rst tube, saidl "member having a5 recess 1n which `said t-ransparent tube is received, anda cap which is screwed on the other 'end'ot1 said first tube ent tube, said irst'tube having openings con- .vnectingthe space between the two tubes with the spa-ce within the first tube, a. removable vplug insaid cap for giving access to' the in- `terior of the first tube, and an oil punipfor. supplying oil to theopening in said mem.
er. f
2. A sight feed Oiler, comprising a tube having screw threaded ends, a memberin which one end of said tube is mounted., said member having an openingvcoinmunicating with said tube, a transparent.tubersurround ing and vspaced from' said rst tube, said member 4having ra recess in which s aidtrans'- parent tube is received, anda c'ap .which isscrewed on the other endwovrisaid irst tube' and bears against the end bf said transpar ent tube, said first tube having openings con-f -.necting the space between the two tubes with vthe spacewithin the' first tube.
-; 3. A sight feed oler, comprising a tube, a
Literas@ mounted, a cap on the other end of `said tube,` a transparent tube surrounding and spaced from said first tube and clamped between said member and said cap, said rst tube having an opening connectingthe space between-the two tubes with the space within the first tube, and means for conducting oil to 'the space Within the i'rs't tube;r
In witness whereof, I. have hereunto set my hand at Richmond, Indiana-,this twenty# eighth day of Ma'y, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and fourteen..
