BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. aaieia.
Application filed September 21, 1914. Serial No. 862,678.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANoELo C. RovELLI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Audubon, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in buttons, the object of the invention being to provide a separable button consisting of a removable body portion and a screw-threaded sharp pointed stud member, the latter adapted to be forced through the material of the garment, and the body member adapted to be screwed onto the threaded stud member and rigidly clamp the material of the garment between the body portion and an extended head on the stud member.
A further object is to provide a button head member with an opening, and with inwardly bent tongues, the walls of said opening and the ends of the inwardly bent tongues constituting threads'or members engaging between threads of a stud member, so that the body portion can firmly grip the stud member by reason of the fact that it engages the stud member between diflerent threads thereof.
A further object is to provide a separable button which is adapted for any style of button, either metal or cloth covered,.and which is particularly adapted for use in connection with buttons that are to be removed or replaced from time to time. 7
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and 'ar-..,
rangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. a
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a View in longitudinal section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stud memher, and Flg. 4 is a perspective view of the body member with the outer covering removed.
My improved button consists of a body portion 1 and a stud member 2. The stud member 2 consists of a screw-threaded sharp pointed stud 3' adapted to be projected through the material indicated at 4,.
and having on its inner end, a relatively large and relatively thin convex head 5 having a flat inner face bearing against the material 4.
The stud is adapted to be projected through the goods or material, thevsharp end of the stud making its own opening. The body portion 1 is of metal, and is hollow; and may be covered by a metal plate 6 as shown in Fig. 4, or may have any other style of covering either metal, cloth, or any desired material. a
The center of the body portion 1 is pro.-
vided with a depression 7, which in its extreme end is provided with an opening 8 r of a size to fit between the threadsof .the stud 3. The depressed portion '7, at opposite sides, is provided with tongues 9 which are stamped from the metal of the body and bent inwardly, the extreme ends of the opposed tongues spaced apart, but sufliciently close together to engage between threads of the stud.
The wall of the button around the opening 8, and the inner ends of the tongues 9, constitute screw-threads or thread engaging members to engage the threads of the stud 3,
and asthese thread engaging members are spaced apart, a rigid gripwill be had upon the stud, andvthe body portion will be held against displacement in any direction.
In operation, the stud 3 is projected through the material 4, and the body. 1 is screwed onto the threaded stud 3, and the material 4: is clamped between the end of the depressed portion 7 of the body 1 and the I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: s
The combination with a screw-threaded stud, of a hollow body having a depressed central portion with an opening in the end thereof, relatively rigid tongues bent inwardly from the sides of the depressed portion and having their free ends recessed to conform to the curvature of the stud and spaced apart, said stud adapted to engage name to this specification in the presenee of V the Walls of said opening and recesses and twosubscribing Witnesses.
'. having a head at one end adapted to clamp I a'thickness of material between the same and ANGELO VE .5 the end of the depressed portion of the body', Witnesses:
substantially as described. v M. E. DIETERS,
In testimony whereof I have signed my Clams. E. Po'r'rs.
