Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 17, 1915..
Application filed December 24, 1913, lserial No. 808,556; Reneweaiiaauaryie, k191,5. semaine. 3,001.
To all whom t may concern.' f
Be it known that I, OWENSINGER', a citizen of the United States, residing at lortland, Vinthe county of Multnomah and State of Gregori, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, ofy which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to pumps, and particularly to that form of pumps known as chain pumps, and has for its object to increase the relative area of the lifting elements in such pumps. l accomplish this object by means of the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, with the intermediate portion broken away, showing the method of mounting and the manner of operatingmy improved pump. Fig. 2 is an end view of the cylindrical tube constituting the body of the pump, showing a plan view of the lifting disk in working position. Fig. 8 is an elevation of a fragment of the pump chain, showing an edge view of a lifting disk.
Referringto the numerals on the drawing, 1 designates a lifting disk stamped from sheet metal of a diameter to fit loosely in the cylindrical tube 8 and to move freely therein with the chain to which it is attached.
' The cylinder 8 is fixed `in vertical position by means of any suitable support, such as the frame l0,with its lower end in communication with the water supply. It is secured by means of the strap 9 at the upper end; and from an extension thereon is supported a column, or riser 7 which at its lower end rests upon a suitable extension from the frame/10. At the upper end of the riser 7 is mounted the shaft 5 which carries a sprocket wheel 6. The diameter of this wheel is such that its periphery or teeth will stand directly above the central point in the cylinder 8, so that a sprocket chain working thereon will move along the longitudinal center of the cylinder.
Upon aV suitable bracket 13 supported from the lower end of the cylinder is mounted another sprocket wheel 6, on a shaft 5. This wheel is mounted in vertical alinement with the upper wheel, and positioned so as to deliver the chain at the lower end of the cylinder. in its longitudinal center.
At suitable intervals along the chain is secured a disk l to link 2 thereof. Each of these disks has stamped from one side a recess l, suiiicently wide to receive the rim of the sprocket wheels, and. extending well toward the center, so thatit will move freely with the chain without interference with the wheels. f y Y .V
From suitable points in the central portion of each disk are stamped up ears il, in. position to bear against the respective sides of a link of the cha-in which is inserted into the central opening 1b and to which it is fixed by means of rivets 4L.
Power willbeapplied to the chain through the upper shaft 5, but since the disks l each have the opening, la, they can not carry water up the vertical cylinder, unaided. have, therefore, placed within the lower end of the cylinder, a block l5 of suitable cross sectional area to fill the recess la, and of a length greater than the distance between two of the disks, so that at least two of the disks at the lower end of the cylinder will always be closed. to prevent the return of the water carried up. lThis block is secured in place by means of screws 14:, or in other suitable manner; and it is beveled at its lower portions la to prevent the accidental engagement of the disks thereon. y
By means of this structure, I am enabled to use a cylindricalvtube, while heretofore half-round tubes have been employed. 'I thus approximately double the capacity of the kpump without materially increasing its said wheels, disks fixed transversely on said l chain loosely fitted in said cylinder, each of said disks being provided with a recess, and means in the lower portion of the cylinder for temporarily closing said recesses.
2. A pump comprising in combination a cylinder, a sprocket wheel mounted at each end kof the cylinder, in alinement with each other, their peripheries being alined with the longitudinal center of the cylinder, a sprocket chain mounted for movement on saidfwheels, disks each having a recess in one side adapted to receive the rim of a sprocket wheel, fixed transversely by the central portion upon said chain, and an oblong block, conforming in cross section to said recess 4 iXed in the lower portion of the cylinder in position to engage in each of saidy recesses as the chainrnoves through the cylinder.
v3. A lifting element yfor pump chains,
comprising a disk having a recess cut from angles to the face 'thereoi l 4; As anew" article of manufacture a pump 'chain comprisinga' seriesY of oblong Copies of this patentmay be obtained for links, disks, eaciistamped tofornn e central openingedapted to receive a Ylinkv of said chain', an ear vformed bythe stamping of said opening rising against each side ofthe 15 v link, andmeans for securing it thereon. one side extending Well .toward the center; thereof, and Vsupporting ears. stamped up froinlthe center ofi'the disk'to'stand at rightv lnvtestiinony whereof I aiiix Vmy signature in presence of two Witnesses.V Y
