'GUARD-PLATE FOR SI-IABPENING- PENCIiLS. l l
Application filed February 17, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PARIS H. WVHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sugar Loaf, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guard-Plates for Sharpening Pencils; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for holding pencils while being sharpened and it has for its object the provision of a guard plate designed to hold the pencil when being sharpened in such a position as to avoid cutting the thumb or finger and at the same time being provided with a receptacle to hold the plumbago and wood clippings.
To this end and'to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel form of the device as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, the same being shown as in the position in which it is held when in use. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 represents a device which consists of a substantially rectangular plate of suitable material provided upon its upper face with a longitudinal groove 5 uncovered its entire length and adapted to receive the pencil 2 and at its opposite end is provided with a dished portion 3 to receive the shavings of plumbago Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 8,826.
removed from the pencil in sharpening the same. Said plate is provided with inclined flanges upon the opposite edges extending beyond one end of said groove, the upper edges of the flanges being adapted to guide the knife while sharpening the pencil when the latter is positioned in the groove. One end of the plate projects laterally and serves as a stop whereby the movement of the pencil in one direction may be limited. As a convenience in hanging the device when not in use, I have provided an opening 4: near the upper end of the device which may be slipped over a nail or any convenient point upon a desk or wall.
The operation of the device will be at once readily understood from the foregoing description in connection with the drawings. The pencil to be sharpened is placed within the longitudinal groove 5 in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the end of the pencil to be sharpened extending over the cup 3. The device is held in the left hand with the thumb resting upon the upper face of the pencil as it lies within the groove, the thumb thus serving to retain the pencil within the groove and it will be read ily noted that by a slight movement of the thumb the pencil is caused to roll within the recess, thus presenting the sides of the pencil uppermost from which the shaving is to be taken. The hand of the operator is thus effectually protected from soiling from the plumbago of the pencil and the thumb of the operator is also protected against possible injury which frequently results in cases in which a sharp knife or other tool is used in sharpening the pencil.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device for holding pencils while being sharpened consisting of a plate made of suitable material, having a longitudinal pencil receiving groove, uncovered its entire length, said plate having inclined flanges on its opposite edges beyond one end of said groove and adapted to guide the knife while sharpening the pencil positioned in said groove and projecting beyond. the end In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my thereof, said plate provided With a dished signature in presence oftWo Witnesses.
portion intermediate said flanges at one end V of the groove, a portion of the plate at oor- I t PARIS responding ends .ofsaid flanges projecting Witnesses; v I laterally and serving as a stop to limit the FERDINAND V. SANFORD, movement 01": the pencil in one direction. r JOHN W. SANFORD.
