Description
sra
se it lknown. that l, lpnns Sonnnmnn; a citizen ot the United States,l residing at Lin# colninthe county of Logan, Ain ,'theSta-teot Illinois7 haye .invented certain new and use-- ful ;lmprovements in Life-Preservers, 'ot' which thefollowing is'ia spe'ciication.'
present invention is used in conjunction with This invention relates to 'newand useful improvements `in klife preservers generally.,`
and relates particularly to helmets designed t mdltseithe head-of the wearer lto formf'a protection when yunder watery said Ehelmet being provided with "an air supply by means of whichA thewea-ieris free to inhale Aand ex-v ha'le` in comparatively normal-mannen' A lfvith thefabove Yand other objects in View',
- this invention-'consists infconstructi'on off a an ordinary life preserver P which encircles the body of the wearer, while under water, and comprises a helmet `10, having a partition 11 in the upper end thereoil to form an 'air lreservoir R, said reservoir being entirelyT operated from the body of the helmet into which the head of the wearer proiects, eX- cept by means ot the air conduit to be described. The front side of the helmet is provided with the lips 12 which surround the side opening 12, said side opening being closed by a section of. plate glass 13 which permits the wearer to observe on the exterior of the helmet. The lower end of the helmet is opened'to a sufficient size to permit of the entrance of an average sized head. and is somewhat contracted on the forward side as at 14. 'An elastic band 15 of rubber or other waterproof material is secured to the lower end of the helmet and isillustrated in Fig. 1, also designed to closely embrace the neck ot the wearer to prevent the entranceL o i mrn-rnnslanvnn.

In order to provide a means whereby air may be supplied to the reservoir Rand at the same time close said reservoir R when the helmet is under water, a cylinder 24 is formed on the rear side' of the helmet and is provided at its upper terminal with an air opening 25 communicating with the interior ot the cylinder 24. This cylinder, as illustrated in Fig. 1, connects with the air reservoir R.- Suitable bearings 26 are formed or mounted within this cylinder and vertically alined for the reception of the valve rod 27 which carries its upper termi- 1'00 nal,' the valve Q8 being arranged to close the air opening 25. The lower terminal of the rod 27 passes through an aperture partition29, the apperture of which is arranged to be closed by a valve mounted on the 105 rod 27 below said partition. In order to reciprocate the rod 27 to close both the air opening 25 and the aperture partition 29, the lower terminal casing 1s perorated as at Blby means of which water 1.10

causing'the `rod 27 to move upwardly and seat the' valves 28 and 30 against their cooperating apertures, shutting of communications between the reservoir R and the water, permitting the air stores in said reservoir to be extracted by the wearer.
In order to hold the hellnet in place, the sides thereof are provided lwith straps 33 of a suitable construction, size, and shape, which are designed to be secured -in any desired manner to the body of the wearer.
'hile the preferred form of the present invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that many changes in the details of construction can be made with- .out departing from the spirit and scope hereof. n
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a helmet having an air reservoir therein, of means for sup- -plying air thereto comprising a cylinder communicating with said reservoir, having an air inlet, and means. operable byl` the action of Water for closing said inlet when .the helmet vis'submerged.
- 2. The combination withf'a helmet, ofa Y partition-therein, :forming an air reservoir, an air supply pipe leading from the reser voir to the body of the helmet, a valve casing with one end of which thesupply `pipe connects, a partition in saidcasin'g, a mouth piece communicationl with Vsaid casingv be` tween said partition and said supply pipe,
an exhaust pipe connected tothe opposite -I end of the casing to the supply pipe, and valves mounted in the casing adjacent to the partition and intake orsupply pipe for operation by respiration through the mouthpiece aforesaid.
- 3. The combination witha helmet, of a partition therein `forming an air reservoir,
' means for conducting air from the reservoir.
to the body of the helmet, means for Lexhausting air so conducted lto the reservoir,
both of said means being operable ,alternately by respiration of the wearer',I air sup-J o ply means 'for the reservoir aforesaida-'nd means for automatically render-ing said'air supply means inoperative when the .helmet is submerged.-
In testimony whereof I have hereunto, of-
fixed my name rin the presence of two witnesses.
