Be it known that I, KENNETH RUsHToN, a citizen of the United States, residingin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in LeverMechanisni for OperatingThrottlefValves, of kthe following is awspecication.y I t t n c. My inventionrelates to. certain. improvei ments in `lever mechanism `for operating throttle valves f of locomotives.
' The'obj ect of my invention is to construct the mechanism so that the valve canbe lift? ed olf of its seat with comparatively little exertion,y and can then be rapidly Vmoved to the full open position. Y y c Locomotives havefincreased in size and capacitytosuch an extent that a veiy'large 'p .throttle valve must be used, consequently these valvesare difficult to operate with the old lever mechanism. In the lever mechanism constructed in accordance with my is movable, giving a variable leverage.
When the valve is to be lifted 0H'l of its seat thefulcrum is close to the connection with the valve rod, and, as the valve is lraised from its seat and balanced, then the fulcrum its pivot, thus decreasing the .leverage but increasing the movement of the valve rod. I
am thus enabled to readily operate the valve without extending the movement of the yoperating lever. c

While I have described myinvention as throttle valves located in locomotive boilers,
it will be understoody that the invention can be used for operating other valves withouty departing from the essential features of the invention. n
I claim: n p f `1. The combination in throttle valve operating mechanism, of a valve rod; an operating lever pivoted thereto; a ulcrumV for moving the fulcrum away from the'pivot and thus decreasing the leverage as the ley ver is operated to open the throttle valve.

a head .secured thereto; an operating lever pivoted to the head; a bracket; Aa .two armed lever pivoted tothe bracket, one arm of said lever engaging the rod; a Jfulcrum block carried by the other arm ofY the lever; an kop'- erating lever having an extension beyond the pivotand projecting through said block 'so that as the operating lever is moved in one direction, the ulcrum block willmove away from the pivot and when 'the lever is the valve lthe 'ulcrum" block will be *moved particularly adapted for use in operating` said lever; and means Jfor automatically moved in theV opposite direction thefulcrum block will ,move toward the pivot.
