To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatl, Pnnno V. Pnnnz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oil'- Key West, in the, county of Monroe and State of Florida, have invented certain Improvements in Cigar-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in cigar cutters, and has for its object the provision oi a simple, easily operated device of the character specified, for cutting cigars to the required length, and at the same time registering the number of cigars cut. I

A further object is to provide a locking device for temporarily preventing the operation of the cutter and registering mechanism. y

A. further object is to provide a particular form of cutting blade having a plurality of cutting edges, so arranged that each may be brought into proper position with respect to a fixed ledger blade.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement from in front; Fig. 2 is a similar view from one end; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line of the rod; Fig. l is a plan View, with the parts in one position, and with the cover removed; Fig. 5 is a partial plan view, with the parts in another position; Figs. 6 and 7 are sections on the lines 66 and 77 respectively of Fig. 4; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of thelrey; and, Fig. 9 is a perspective View of the cutting blade.

In the present embodiment of the invention, a block or base 1 of wood or the like is provided having on its upper face a cover 2 of metal held in place by screws 3. The cover extends from one side edge of the block to near the other side edge, and a longitudinal groove or gutter 5 is provided 1n that portion of the upper face, not covered by the cover. A lever 7 is arranged at one end of the block, and is pivoted to the block by a screw 8, at the end of the bar remote from the gutter. The other end of the lever is provided with a cutter 9 (Fig. 9) in the form of a metal plate, having four cutting edges 9 The plate has two openings 10, for receiving screws 11, or the like, to connect the plate with the lever, with one of the cutting edges above the end of the groove 5. Each of the said cutting edges is concave, and two of the edgesare arranged at each side edge of the plate. The said side edges arebeveled to form the cutting edges, and

the edges at each side edge are beveled in opposite directions. The bevel of each cutting edge is thus parallel with the adjacent edge at the opposite side edge 01 the plate. The plate may be changed to bring any of the edges above the groove, by removing the screws 11. That is the plate may be turned and secured to the lever with any of the cutting edges above the end of the groove, and however arranged, the beveled side of the edge will be away from the casing. The lever is normally held with the blade elevated above the groove 5, by means of a spring 12. The spring is held to the base by an eye 13, and one end of the spring extends beyond the base, and engages above a lug 1% on the lever 7. A pin 15 is provided on the base to limit the upward movement of the free end of the lever, by engaging a notcn. 16 on the lever, and the lever has a lateral lug 17 at its free end, forming a finger piece "for operating the lever. The downward movement of the lever is limited by a pin or lug 7 on a plate 2 secured to the adjacent end of the base by screws 3*, between the lover and the base.

A ledger blade is provided on the base, at the end of the groove, for cooperating with the plate 9, and the said blade is in the shape of a plate 18, provided with a concave cutting edge 19. A screw eye 20 is threaded into the base a'iorholding the plate in place, the eye passing through an opening 21 in the plate 18, and through a washer 22 engaging the outer face of the plate. The cutting edge 19 is beveled on the outer face of the )late as shown in Fi 7.

A scale 23 is provided on the edge of the cover 2 adj accnt to the gutter 5, and an indicating finger 2a cooperates with the scale. The scale may he graduated in inches and fractions thereof or any other system of measurement, and the indicating numerals increase from the cutting devices toward the opposite end of the base.

The linger 2i extends laterally from an arm 25, moving in a longitudinal slot 4 in the upper "face of the base, on the inner side of the gutter 5, and the slot communicates with a bore 6, extending longitudinally of the base. A screw rod or shaft 26 is arranged in the bore, the ends of the rod being reduced to form

27, and 27 which are journaled in bearing plates 28, at each end of the bore.

One of the pins 27 is extended out of the threaded over a portion of its length, as

shown. at 30, and the arm 25 has a threaded opening engaging the said portion, sothat when the rod is rotated, the arm will be moved toward or from the cutting device.

The arm :25 is provided with a lateral head 31 extending in the opposite direction from the finger, and moving in the groove or gutter 5, and adapted to engage the end of a cigar in the gutter to move the cigar toward the cutting device. The linger 24 in dicates on the scale the length of cigar between the head and the cutting device.

A hearing plate is arranged at the end of the bore adjacent to the knob 29, and is secured to the base by screws 83. The base is provided with a recess 84 in its upper face, and the cover plate 2 is provided with a plurality of similar openings 35 above the said. recess.

A registering device 36 is arranged in the recess and in the upper face of the cover of the said device is arranged a longitudinal series of openings 37. Adjacent to each opening 37 is provided an opening 39 throughwhich extends the hub 38 of the indicatingwheel whose indications 40 appear through the adjacent opening 87.

A key 41 for operating the wheels is held at one-end of the base, on the plate 2 before mentioned. The key 41 is held by an eye 42, on the plate at one end of the key, and by a rotatable pin 43, having a lateral lug for engaging an opening 41 in the handle of the key. The point 41 of the key is passed into the eye, and the pin passes through the handle-of the key, and is then turned to hold the key in place.

It will be noticed that there are five open ings in series 37 and that there is a number wheel for each opening each wheel being so arranged, that its indications will appear through the adjacent opening. The first opening of the series 37, that is the opening adjacent to the cutting device is the units wheel, and the said wheel is operated by the lever 7, to register every time the lever is moved to cut a cigar.

An arm 44 is connected with the registering mechanism for operating the same, and the said arm extends into position for engagement by the lever, through a slot in the plate 2. \Vhenever the lever is swung to cut a cigar, the forward edge of the angular portion 8 thereof, engages the arm, and moves the arm to cause the registering mechanism to operate. Vhenever the units wheel has made a complete rotation the next or tens wheel is moved, and soon to the last or tens of thousands wheel.

A look is provided for preventing the operation of the device, the said lock comprising avertical post 45 mounted to rotate between the cover and the bottom of the recess, and having a bit or lateral lug 46, for engaging arm 44, to prevent rotation thereof. The post has a reduced journal pin 47 at its lower end, journaled in the base, and has a collar 48 near its upper end secured in a counter sink in the under face of the cover; The upper end of the post is arranged to receive a key, to turn the post to cause the bit 46 to engage the arm, to prevent movement of lever 7.

Each of the hubs 38 is arranged to receive key 41, to turn the wheel, for returning the wheels to neutral position. The key is always in position on the device, and may be readily detached for use. It will be understood that the key 41 does not operate the post 45. A plate spring 49 has one end connected to the case of the registering device, by means of ascrew 50, and the other end is provided with a lateral lug 51'.

The lug 51 engages the adjacent end of arm 44, to return the arm to original position, after being moved by the cutter lever. The plate having the four cutting edges can; be used until each of the edges is dulled, and can then be reground.

Inoperation, the finger 24 is set on' the scale, ata point suchthat the distance from the head tothe cutting device corresponds to the length'of cigar required. The cigar to be cut is laid in the gutter 5', with the one end against the head 31, and the other projecting between the lever and the ledger blade. The arm 44 having been released by the locking device, the lever is depressed, thus cutting the cigar to the proper length and at the same time actuating the registering device to register one. The said device is of course returned to neutral position before the commencement of the operation. Every cigar cut is registered and at the end of the day, the device may be locked until the next day.

I claim:

1. A cigar cutter comprising a base having a longitudinal groove or gutter near one side edge, and having a longitudinal bore at the inner side of the groove and a longitudinal slot connecting with the bore and having a scale on the opposite side of the slot from the groove, a threaded rod journaled in the bore, a milled knob at one end of the rod for turning the rod, an arm in the slot having a threaded opening engaging the rod, said arm extending above the slot and having a lateral finger extending above the scale and cooperating therewith, said arm having a head or gage extendin' into the groove for engagement by the en of a cigar, and a cutting device at one end of the groove.

2. In a device of the character specified, a plate having each of its opposite side edges provided with a plurality of concave cutting edges, the edge at each side of the plate being beveled at opposite sides of the plate, the bevel of each cutting edge being substantially parallel to that of the adjacent edge at the opposite edge of the plate.

3. In a device of the character specified, a plate having each of its opposite side edges provided With a plurality of concave cutting edges, the edges at each side of the plate being beveled at opposite sides of the plate.

4. A cigar cutter comprising a base having means for receiving a cigar, a threaded rod journaled alongside the said receiving means, an arm having a threaded opening intermediate its ends through which the rod extends, the base having a scale on the opposite side of the rod from the cigar re ceiving means With Which the adjacent end of the arm cooperates, the opposite end of the arm being adapted to engage the inner,

end of the cigar, and a cutting device at the outer end of the cigar receiving means.

5. A cigar cutter comprising a base having means for receiving a cigar, a rod journaled for rotation alongside the said receiving means, the base having a scale adjacent to the rod, an arm having a threaded engagement With the rod and extending transversely of the cigar receiving means for moving the cigar when the rod is rotated, said arm cooperating With the scale, and means at the outer end of the said receiving means for clipping the end of the cigar.
