To all 'tU/LOWZ it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MCBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Athens, county of Athens, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pressure-Bars for Binding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to binding machinery of the class in which loose leaves are placed and evened and held in position by a pressure bar during the operation of perforating and binding them into a volume, and the object of the invention is to provide a pressure bar which may be easily and quickly operated and which when not in use, may be removable so as not to be in the way for the evening of papers, etc.
A. further object is to provide a guide for the drill, in connection with the pressure bar, the guide being removable, after the drilling, so as to be out of the way during the binding process.
My invention consists of certain details of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying I drawings in which Figure I shows a front elevation view of my device secured to a binding machine; Fig. II shows a side elevation view of the same, the upper portion of the machine being broken away; Fig. III shows a sectional view taken on the line 33, in Fig. I; Fig. IV shows a perspective detail view of a part of my device; Fig. V shows a sectional view taken on the line 55, in Fig. I; and Fig. VI shows a sectional detail view of my looking means for the guide bar.
Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 10 is used to indicate the base of a binding machine and the numerals 11 and 12 the standards thereof which are designed to support the drilling apparatus. On the outer surface of each of said standards, and extending upwardly from the base of the machine, is a rack 13 and 14 respectively, and also secured to each of said standards and to the forward surface thereof is a parallel guide member, 15 and 16 respectively, said guide members extending from the lower extremity of the machine to a point above the aforesaid racks. The construction is such as to provide a space between the guide members and their respective standards in which my pressure bar 17 is designed to operate, upwardly and down- Specification of Letters Patent.

Extending longitudinally through the pressure bar 17 is a shaft 18, and on each end thereof is a gear wheel 19 and 20, respectively, designed to mesh with, and be operated in, their respective racks. On one end of said shaft 18 I have secured a crank arm 21 by means of which the shaft 18 is rotated, the bearings of said shaft, being in the pressure bar. Obviously the aforesaid racks are similar in every respect, as are the aforesaid gear wheels thus making the operation of the said gear wheels in their respective racks simultaneous and uniform.
On the end of the shaft 18 opposite the crank end, I have mounted, for rotation, an arm 22 on the end of which is an inwardly projecting pawl 28, designed for engagement betweenthe rack teeth,.and the construction of the rack teeth, and the pawl is such that the pawl will engage between the teeth to hold the pressure bar up, when the pawl is below the gear wheel, and will hold the pressure bar firmly down against the sheets in the binding machine, when the pawl is above the gear Wheel. The pawl swings freely until forced in one position or the other. A spring actuated pawl for this purpose may be used, if desired, without changing my invention in this respect.
By construction the pressure bar which I have just described lies in a position immediately in the rear of the line of the drill for perforating the papers to be bound. Hinged to the forward surface of the pressure bar and at one end thereof, as by a hinge 29 is a guide bar, the main body of which is composed of two parallel bars 24 and 25, vertically arranged, the space between said bars being in. line with the drill designed to perforate the papers. On the other end of the pressure bar I have mounted a lug or stop 26 with a slot therein, de signed to receive a conforming lug or tongue 27 on the end of the guide bar, thus providing means for locking, laterally, the guide bar to the pressure bar. At this end the guide bar is beveled downwardly on its upper face from its end and on the pressure bar I have secured for rotation an arm 28, which is designed to pass over this beveled end of guide bar andclamp it firmly down into the slot in the stop 26 thus providing a vertical lock for the said guide bar.
From the construction just described it is obvious that when the papers to be bound have been placed in the machine the pressure bar being lowered against them and forced downward as much as possible, it may be looked in this position. After the papers have been drilled and the drilling apparatus elevated the guide bar will be unlocked and moved outwardly on its hinge thus removing it out of the way of the binding operation, the pressure bar still firmly holding the sheets in their position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a binding machine, the combination with guide standards of a pressure bar mounted for vertical movement between said standards, means to raise and lower said pressure bar, means to lock said pressure bar at varying heights on said standards, a guide bar hinged to said pressure bar and adapted to be locked on the latter in parallel relation thereto, and means to lock said pressure bar and guide bar rigidly together.
2. In a binding mechanism, the combination with guide standards, of a pressure bar mounted for vertical movement between said standards, means to raise and lower said pressure bar, means to lock said pressure bar at varying heights on said standards, a guide bar carried by said pressure bar and hinged to the latter by one end, and a looking means for rigidly fixing the opposite end of said guide bar to said pressure bar.
3. In a binding machine, the combination with guide standards, of a longitudinal pressure bar mounted for vertical movement between said standards, means to raise and lower said pressure bar, a guide bar carried by said pressure bar, said guide bar consisting of a pair of parallel spaced members, a hinge supporting and connecting one end of said guide bar to said pressure bar, a slotted stop on the opposite end of said pressure bar, a tongue on said guide bar to fit into said slotted stop, and means to clamp said tongue and stop together.
