IPACKER FOR OIL-WELLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.,
Application filed May 29, 1915. Serial No. 31,203.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cairo, in the county of Ritchie and State of lVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packers for Oil-\Vells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oil well apparatus, particularly to apparatus used in the eduction of oil from wells producing both oil and gas, and has for its object the provision of means associated with the ordinary packer used to prevent seepage of water from the upper strata down into the oil cavity, whereby the gas in the well whether below or above the oil may be maintained at the most advantageous pressure for pumping, and whereby the surplus gas may be allowed to escape from the well and mix with the ascending oil at the packer thereby obviating the necessity for the employment of the great length of pipe now used above the packer for the conduction of the gas.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character embodying a check valve for the regulation of thegas pressure within the well, different valves being usable to suit the requirements of the various conditions.
Withthese and other objects and advantages in view such as simplicity, cheapness in manufacture and'installation, efliciency and durability in service and the general improvement of the art, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in.which Figure 1 is an elevation of a well packer having my device applied thereto, Fig. 2 is ah enlarged-sectional view through my device and the upper portion of the packer, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail view showing the check valve in detail.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a packer of the usual type employed to prevent the seepage of water from the upper strata. of rock into the oil cavity. Extending through the packer is the usual tube 2 serving as a housing for the sucker rods and as a conduit for theascendingoil. Thchead of thcpackerl is provided with the usual. opening 3 through which passes the usual pipe I for the escape of the gas. In present practice, the pipe at 'ing.
extends to the top of the well, requiring a great length of pipe.
I In the carrying out of my invention, the tube 2 and pipe 4 terminate at and are threaded into the packer head as shown, and the upper end of the packer is reduced and threaded as shown at 5. A bell nipple 6 is threaded upon the reduced portion 5 of the packer and has its upper end reduced as shown at 7 and internally threaded. A length of tube 8 provided with perforations 9 has its lower end threaded into the packer head 1 and its upper end threaded into the reduced portion 7 of the bell nipple, A tube 10 has its lower end threaded into the reduced portion 7 of the nipple and extends to the top of the well. The tubes 2, 8 and 10 are of course in alinement and house the sucker rods.
In order that the gas within the well may I A ball 16 of any predetermined weight is disposed within seat 14.
lVhen my device is in use, the gas will rise in the pipe 4, raising the ball 16 and escape into the nipple whence it will pass through the perforations 9 into the pipe 8, mixing with the oil and discharging at the top of the well. The weight of the ball will prevent all the gas from escaping and its weight will serve as'a regulator of the gas pressure and maintain a sufficient pressure of gas within the well to enliven the oil and facilitate its the cage 15 and upon the It will be understood that any suitable form of check valve may-be employed instead of the one shown as the specific detail of the valve has no limitation on the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. An oilwell packer having a sucker rod tube and a gas vent pipe extending there through and terminating at the upper end I provide a removal by pumpthereof, and an outlet pipe, at coupler connecting said tube and said outlet pipe and having a check valve therein.
2. In combination with an oil well packer having a sucker rod tube and a gas vent pipe extending through and terminating at the upper end of said packer,
regulate the gas flow.
' 31The combination with an oil well packer having a sucker rod tube and a gas vent pipe extending through and terminating at the upper end thereof, of a nipple secured upon the upper end of said packer, a sucker rod tube extending through said nipple and communicating with said first named tube, and means on said gas vent pipe extending into said nipple for maintaining the gas in said Well at a predetermined pressure.
4. The combination with an oil well packer having a sucker rod tube and a gas vent pipe extending through and terminating at the upper end thereof, of a nipple secured upon the upper end of said packer, a sucker rod tube extending through said nipple andcommunicating with said first named tube, means on said gas vent pipe extending into said nipple for maintaining the gas in said Well at a predetermined pressure, and means to allow the gas above the predetermined pressure to escape from said nipple.
means secured on the upper end of said gas vent pipe to 5. The combination with an oil well packer having a sucker rod tube and a gas vent pipe extending through and terminating at the upper end thereof, of a bell nipple secured upon the upper end of said packer, a sucker rod tube extending through said nipple and communicating with said first named tube, and a check valve on said gas pipe, said tube within said nipple being perforated.
6. An oil well packer having a tube and a gas vent pipe extending therethrough and threaded into the upper end thereof, a bell nipple threaded upon the upper end of said packer, a tube threaded into the upper reduced end of said nipple, a coupling tube threaded intosaid reduced portion of said nipple and into the head of said packer and alining with said first and second named tubes, all three of said tubes receiving the sucker rods and serving as an oil conduit, and a check valve within said nipple and communicating with said gas vent pipe, said last named tube being provided with perforations.
In testimony whereof hereto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH D. GRIFFIN.
