To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. REEDY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Battle Creek, in the. county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvemeans in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to gas burners particularly designed .for use in water heaters where the burner is placed at the base of a casing inclosing the water heating coils. With such constructions it is usual to form the burner of a comparatively flat ring or star-shaped form, having perforations or slits in the upper surface thereof for the gas jets. During use the carbon deposits that frequently form upon the heating coils, as well as the rust or corrosion, will result in the dropping of dust which clogs the gas jets, so that the efficiency of the burner is With the present construction this difficulty is overcome by forming the burner with an obliquely-angled upper face in which the jet openlngs are drilled or formed, the inclination of the. facebeing such as to deflect any flying sediment and avoid clogging of the jet openings.
A further feature of the construction is the arrangement opposite. the inlet orifice for the gas of a bafile plate which prevents the direct discharge of gas through the openings above the inlet, so as to equalize the jets in different portions of the ring.
, Still another feature is the arrangement of a series of jet openings near the apex of the inverted V-shaped top of the burner, which in connection with the jet openings lower down on the incline will=form a flame of considerable depth, thereby increasing the efliciency ofthe burner.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of the burner; and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the burner.
A is a hollow ring preferably formed of cast metal and having the inverted V-shaped top portion B.
O is a series of jet apertures bored or otherwise formed in the lower portion of the inner face of the V. v
D is a corresponding series of perforations near the apex of the inner face of the -V, and E are perforations on the outer face of the V corresponding to the perforations 0.
F is the gas inlet nipple formed in the bottom of the ring, and G is a baflie plate above the nipple F for intercepting the direct path of gas and deflecting the same laterally in the ring.
H are lugs projecting from the sides of the ring and serving to center the same within the outer casing.
lVith the construction as described, when the burner is arranged in position the gas ets will be directedat opposite angles from the series of apertures C and E, While additional jets will pass through the apertures D and will increase the height of the flame. Any soot or dust which may be deposited upon the heating surface above the burner and which falls therefrom will be deflected by the comparatively steep sides of the V insteadof lodging in the jet apertures and clogging the same. Furthermore if any particles do lodge upon the burner the force of the jet will dislodge them and they will then slide down the inclined side.
What I claim as my invention is A gas burner, comprising a hollow ring having an inverted V-shaped top with a series of jet apertures in the opposite sides of the V near the base thereof, and a series of jet apertures on one of the sides near the apex of the V, a gas inlet nipple in the bottom of the ring, and a baffle plate above said inlet for laterally deflecting the gas to pro duce uniform jets.
