Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 191 5.
Application filed January 12, 1914, SerialNo. 811,653. Renewed January 25, 1915. Serial No. 4,408.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARA E, Ewrnos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jim Falls, in the county of Chippewa, State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such .as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wash boilers.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a wash boiler which embodies a perforated false bottom affording a free circulation of water through the clothes disposed within the boiler.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means for supporting the false bottom at different elevations so that the boiler can be heated upon fires of different intensities, the elevation of the bottom serving to prevent scorching of the clothes when the boiler is placed over a fire of great intensity.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a boiler which will be simple in construction, efficient in use and which may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a wash boiler constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1. with the false bottom adjusted to a greater elevation with respect to the bottom of the boiler than is shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the top of the boiler looking at the inner side thereof; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the false bottom with the legs of the latter in folded position; Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 4 with the legs of the false bottom set up, and Fig. 6, an enlarged detail perspective view of the fastenmg means employed in securing the legs of the false bottom in set up position.
Referring to the drawings 10 indicates the body of the boiler the upper end of which is open and adapted to be closed by Yversely curved plate 13 having teeth 14 struck therefrom to constitute a soap scraper. The cover 11 isprovided with the usualhandle '15.
Mounted in one side of the body 10 is a faucet 16 whereby water may be readily drained from the interior of the body. Disposed within the body 10 is a perforated bottom 17 provided with edge flanges 18 which are adapted to support the body 17 in spaced relationv to the bottom of the body 10. Secured to the underside of the bottom 17 at its junction with one of the flanges 18 are alined bearings 19, while similar alined bearings 20 are secured to the underside of the bottom 17 at the junction of the latter with the opposite flange 18. Rotatably mounted in the bearings 19 are the inwardly directed terminals 21 of the arms of a U- shaped member 22, while the inwardly directed terminals 23 of a U-shaped member 24: are rotatably mounted in the bearings 20. The inwardly directed terminals 21 and 23 are of suflicient length to permit of the members 22 and 24: being moved transversely a predetermined distance. Secured to the flange 18 adjacent the outer end of one of the bearings 19 is a spring clip 25, while a similar spring clip 26 is secured to the opposite flange 18 adjacent the outer end of the corresponding bearing 20. These clips 25 and 26 are in the form of a leaf spring and have their free ends directed outwardly and their intermediate portions curved outwardly and inwardly as at 27. By this construction it will be apparent that the members 22 and 23 can be folded against the underside of the bottom 17, when said bottom will be supported by engagement of the flanges 18 with the bottom of the body 10. It will also be obvious that when the members 22 and 24 are moved transversely to their limits in the direction of the clips 25 and 26 and then swung to a position at right angles to the bottom 17 and then moved transversely in the opposite direction corresponding arms of the members 22 and 2 1 will pass behind respective clips 25 and 26 and thus be locked in a position at right angles to the bottom 17. With the parts in this status the bottom 17 will be supported by the members 22 and 24 and of course held at greater elevation with respect to the bottom of the body 10 than when the bottom 17 is supported directly by the flanges 18.
What is claimed is In a Wash boiler the combination of a body, a false bottom disposed Within the body and comprising a perforated plate having edge flanges adapted to engage the bottom of the body and support the plate in spaced relation to the bottom of the body, alined bearings secured to the underside of the plate at the junction of the latter with opposite flanges, U-shaped members having the ends of their arms turned inwardly and slidably and rotatably engaged in alined ter are disposed at right angles to the plate and moved a predetermined extent in said bearing whereby said members are locked in a position at right angles to the plate.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
