To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PHiLLir JACOB DREI-1ER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Stop Means for Automatic Type- Vriters, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly to automatically operated typewriters, but is not restricted to such use as it may be used in any connection for which it is applicable.
The primary object of my inventionis the provision in combination with the drive means of a typewriter of means which 1s automatically operable to stop the driving means upon the remo fal of the last sheet ofpaper or the like from the holding table therefor, thus enhancing the practicability of apparatus of this class.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention in association with the sheet carrying table of a sheet feeding means for typewriters, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail of one of the pneumatic units.
This application is a division of the application tiled by me'on August E29, 1911, Serial No. 616,661.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designatesY a typewriter desk or other suitable part with which my invention may be associated, :2 a typewriter mounted thereon, and 3 the frame of a sheet feeding mechanism which is carried b y the typewriter carriage 4 for movements therewith and has the sheet carrying table 5 rising on an incline from the forward end portion thereof, as shown.
The mechanism which is shown in the present instance for successively feeding sheets to the platen-roll is the same as that described in my said former application Serial No. 646,661. This mechanism comprises one or more pivotal arms G, which carry at their free or swinging ends a hollow shaft provided with laterally projecting sheet picking-up mouth-pieces?, which are in communication through av tube 8 with a suction device 9. A crank arm 10 projects downward from the mouth-piece carrying shaft and has its lower end in slotted pivotal connection with a push-bar 11 that is normally held at the limit of its rearward movement by the action of a spring 12 thereon.
The means employed for imparting properly timed rearward movements to the bar 11 as the feeding of the sheets to the typewriter platen may require is shown as being effected by the movement in .one direction of a striker-lever 13, which is fulcrumed, as at 14, and has its upper end disposed in position to have contact with the rear end of the push bar 11 and impart longitudinal movements thereto when oscillated in one direction, or,Y from normal position. The lower end of the lever 13 is engaged with the movable part of a bellows or pump 15 whereby a collapsing of such bellows imparts bar striking movements to the lever. This bellows has communication through a pipe 1G-with the suction device 9, and its collapsing movements are controlled by the movement of a perforation in the control sheet 17 into register with a passage in the tracker 18, which passage is in communication with the bellows, as through a tube 19. A bellows or pump Q0 which is' also controlled from the tracker 18 operates a valve 21 to open and close communication between the suction means 9 and mouth pieces 7, as it may be desired to pick up a sheet by the mouth-pieces or release the same.
The suction device 9 is shown in the present instance as being operated by a belt 22. leading from an electric motor 23,which motor is shown in the present instance as having a Vswitch in circuit therewith which comprises the fixed and movable contact parts 2l and 25, respectively.
In carrying out the feature of my present invention. the movable switch part Q5 is attached to the movable part of a bellows or pump 26, which is suitably carried within the desk, as by a bracket Q7, and has its eX- haust tube QS communicating with the exhaust pipe 16, and its air inlet tube Q9 leading thereto from an opening 30 in the bottom of the sheet carrying table 5. The inlet end of the opening 30 1s disposed in position to be covered by a sheet t when resting upon the bottom ofthe table 5, and upon the raising of the last sheet from the table the opening 30 will be uncovered to the atmosphere to permit a circulation ot air through the bellows 2G to the suction means, and a consequent collapsing ot' the bellows by suction action, as is well understood in the art. Upon a vollapsing of the bellows Q6 in this manner the movable switch part is thrown to open position, thus stopping the motor and operation otl the suction device 9, or any other automatically operated part oi the typewriter to which the motor may be attached.
Numerous forms otl bellows or pneumatic units Q0 and 2G are on the market, and it will be sutlicient for an understanding' of the operation otl the invention todescribe one t'orm only thereof, which is shown in detail in Fig. In these bellows, 3l designates the body or stationary part, and 3l the interior of the bellows proper. rI`he body 31 is provided with a chamber 32, which has communication through a passage 33 with the suction pipe lli and has communication through a passage 3l with the interior 3l ot' the bellows. )i diaphragm 35 is disposed in the chamber and divides it into two compartments, one of which has communication with both passages 33 and 8l, while the other has communication through a passage 536 with the tube 29 leading from the opening 30 in the sheet carrying table 5. A diskvalve is disposed in the passage 3l, and has its stem projected into the chamber 3" and attached to the diaphragm 35. lVhen the valve is raised by the suction action thereon from within the chamber 3Q it closes the communication between such chamber andthe passage 3l, and when lowered, due to atmospheric pressure in the passage Sli upon the diaphragn'i P35, it is lowered and opens the communication between the chamber 32 and passage 3l to the bellows and closes the opening 38 Jfrom the passage 34. to the atmosphere. It is thus apparent that when the opening 3Q in the sheet feeding table is closed b v a sheet c the suction action within the chamber 232 will move the valve 3T to close the communication between the suction means and. the interior ot the bellows and open the communication between the atmosphere and the bellows, and that upon an uncoveriim` ot' the opening 230 the atmospheric pressure. which then rushes into the passage, acts upon the diaphragm 35 and eliects a movement of the valve 3T to open communicationv between the suction means and the interior oi the, bellows so that a sudden collapsing ot the bellows is ei'l'eeicd. small bleed-opening 259 is provided between the passage lo and the suction chamber 32 so to the valve.
It is thus apparent that I have provided simple and eiiicient means for effecting a positive stopping of the actuating means of the typewriter operating parts, as in the present instance the sheet feeding means thereof, upon a removal of the last sheet L from the table It is also evident that the suction passage l0, suction means 9, bellows 2li and passage 2S) form a pneumatic system that is rendered operative by a running ot' the motor or other suit-able actuating mechanism 223, and that a change ot' pressure in the passage 29 renders the bellows 26 operable.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to use in connection with any particular operating device, or any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specilied in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
l.'In combination, an electro-magnetically operated means, a switch in circuit with said means, a sheet holding table having an opening in its bottom adapted to be covered by a Vsheet carried thereby, and means pneumatically operable to open said switch upon the removal of the last sheet of a pile from over said opening.
2. In combination, an electric motor, a switch in circuit with said motor, a sheet holding table having an opening in its bottom adapted to be covered by a sheet carried thereby, and means pneumatically operable to open said switch upon the removal of the last sheet of a pile from over said opening.
3. In combination, an electric motor, a switch in circuit with said motor, a controlling means, a sheet holding table having a liuid inlet, a suction apparatus in communication with said inlet through said controlling means, said inlet adapted to be closed by sheets placed on the table over the inlet and opened by removal of the last sheet, said controlling means being operated to move said switch to open position by a change of pressure in the communication between said suction apparatus and inlet upon an opening ot' said inlet.
t. rl`he combination with a sheet holding table having an air inlet passage therein and mechanism operable to intermittently feed sheets from said table, of electric means operable to actuate said mechanism, a switch in circuit with said means, and means which is pneumatically operable to open Said switch when the air inlet passage in the table is uncovered to the atmosphere by the removal of the last sheet of a pile from over the same.
5. The combination with a sheet holding table having an opening in its bottom adapted to be covered by a sheet, carried thereby,
.electrically operated mechanism for deliveruncovering of said opening by the removal of the last sheet of the pile from said table.
7. In combination, a Sheet holding table from which sheets are fed, said table having an opening therein closed by a sheet thereon, a motor, a switch operable to stop the running of said motor, a bellows attachedto said switch, said bellows having communication with said table'opening, and means operable tc create a suction through said bellows to cause a movement of said switch to stop the motor when said sheet covering said'table opening has been removed therefrom.
