To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALnxIs R. PRIBIL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Grease-Cup, of which the following is p a specification.
This invention relates to grease cups including two main elements connected by screw threads, and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient means for normally holding the elements from relative movement; and the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter set forth and claimed. I
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, an elevation and longitudinal section of this grease cup. Figs. 3 and A are enlarged end views of the main elements thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view illustrating the operation of the locking means.
This grease cup comprises generally a base, a cap and locking means associated with the base and engaging the cap.
1 is the base'having an externally threaded head 2 and a depending stem 3 for attachment to the part to be lubricated, the base having a recess 4 and an outlet passage 5 extending downwardly through the stem.
6 is an internally threaded cap turning on the head 2 of the base for compressing the grease therein.
7 is the locking means comprising a con tinuous or unslotted resilient cup shape shell fixed to the base, the shell having an axial opening in its resilient end wall through which the stem 3 passes and the stem having a shoulder 8 engaging the inner face of said end wall, and a removable shoulder 9 in the form of a nut threading on the stem 3 against the outer face of the said end wall. The shoulders 8, 9 are of less diameter than the end wall so that the resiliency of the outer portion of the end wall is not destroyed.
The barrel portions of the cap 6 and the shell 7 are formed respectively with peripheral and internal engaging means operable to distort the resilient shell as a whole and tension the same to normally hold the cap 6 from turning movement on the head 2, and

as here shown the cap 6 is formed with a plurality of lengthwise peripheral grooves 10 equidistantly spaced, and the shell 7 with a different number of internal projections 11 equidistantly spaced, so that when one of the projections 11 enters one of the grooves 10, the remaining projections 11 bear on the periphery of the barrel 6 and distort theshell 7 as a whole and tension the same to hold the one projection in the groove. These projections and grooves are shaped so that the projections can ratchet into and out of the grooves during turning of the cap 6 by hand, thecap being provided with a suitable handle as awing 12 for this purpose. Preferably, there are four grooves 10 and three projections 11 so that one projection and one groove will engage upon a slight turning of the cap 6.
What I claim is 1. A grease cup comprising a base includ ing a peripherally threaded head, a cap having a barrel portion threading on the base, and a locking means in the form of a resilient cup shaped shell fixed to the base and arranged with its side wall encircling and engaging the barrel, the barrel and the shell having interlocking surfaces and other surfaces coacting to distort the shell as a whole for holding the interlocking surfaces in engagement, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' 2. A grease cup comprising a base including a peripherally threaded head, a cap having a barrel portion threading on the base, and a continuous resilient cup shaped shell carried by the base and encircling and engaging the barrel, the barrel and the side wall of the shell having interengaging means and additional means operable to distort the resilient shell as a whole and tension the same to normally hold the base and cap from relative movement, substantially as .and for the purpose specified.
3. A grease cup comprising a base includ ing a peripherally threaded head, a cap having a barrel portion threading on the base, and a continuous resilient cup shape shell carried by the base and arranged with its side wall encircling and engaging the barrel, one of said engaging parts having a lengthwise groove and the other raised projections for entering the groove, the projections being spaced apart so that when one enters the groove another presses on the opposing surface of the part formed with the groove and distorts and tensions the shell to hold said one of the projections in the groove, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

A grease cup comprising a base including a peripherally threaded head, a cap having a barrel portion threading on said head, and a continuous resilient cup shape shell carried by the base and arranged with its side wall inclosing the cap, the cap having a plurality of lengthwise grooves spaced equidistantly, and the resilient shell having a diil'erent number of internal projections spaced equidistantly, the projections being so arranged that when one enters a groove the others press on the periphery of the threaded cap and distort and tension the resilient shell, substantially as and for the purpose described.
