To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, WrnLrearMonnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of'Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Street- Indicators; and I do hereby-declare the following to. be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.

This invention comprehends certain new and, useful improvements in street indicators for streetcars and the like and has for its primary object to provide an indicator of this character which will be ofsuch construction that the operative parts will be automatically carried back to normal position by'means of the weights after each operation of the device.

The invention has for a further object to provide a street indicator of this character which is of extremely simple construction andoperation as well as highly efficient, in use;

Vith the above and other objects inview as will becomemore apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinationand arrangement ofvparts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. 4

For acomplete understanding of my invention, reference is, to be hadto the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the complete device, Fig. 2 is' a side view thereof,Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the, plane of line of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail section on the plane of line of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a transverse detail section on the plane-ofline 55 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, with the parts slightly enlarged.

Referring more particularly to v the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates .a casing within which are positioned the transverse lower and upper rollers, 2 and 3 respectively, around which rollers 2 and 3 the cloth 4 is engaged and secured, said cloth having the names of streets or stations located thereon at spaced distances.

The lower roller has a crank 5 formed on one endby means of whichsaid roller may be rotated to wind the cloth 4 thereon, said cloth 4 being withdrawn from said roller 2 and wound upon the upper roller 3 by a step rotation imparted to said upper roller 3 by novelmechanism which will be later fully described. The upper roller 3 has one end spaced from the adjacent side of the casing 1, and against this endjof-the upper roller 3 is secured a'spider member 10 by suitable fasten- 7 ing members 11 passed through the legs of said spider member 10 and into the end of the roller 3, a suitable peg 12 extending through the central opening of thespider member 10 and having its head held against the upper roller 3 by meansfof. said spider member 10. To one of the legs of the spiderl member 10 is pivoted a pawl 13 which has the bent end 14-of a spring member 15bearing upon the same to retain said pawl 13in, engagement with the teeth of the ratchet; wheel .16 which is rotatably mounted upon the peg 12 and secure'dto the end ofthe roller section 17, which is also rotatably mounted upon the peg 12. The springsme'm ber 15 is secured to the outer face of the upper roller 3, the end bearing upon the pawl 13 being extended around the end of said upper roller 3 and turned at an angle to the I same and to the main portion of said spring member 15.

The auxiliary roller section 17 is rotatably engaged in the bearing sleeve 18, which rests 7 or removed, longitudinal movement of the bearing sleeve 18 being prevented by the flange 20 formed around thesame and positioned adjacent the inner face of the end or side of the casing through which said sleeve extends, and the sprocket wheel 21 also formed with the sleeve 18 and positioned adjacent the outer face of said end or side of the casing 1. It will be understood that the lower and upper portions of the end or side of the casing have circular bearing members 22 secured to the edges thereof and forming the bearing for the sleeve 18, thereby preventing wearing of the casing by rotation of the sleeve 18.

A sprocket chain 23 is engaged around the sprocket wheel 21 and has a weight 2 5 secured to one end, which weight is slidably positioned in the guide tube 25 positioned against the end of the casing 1. WVhen it is 'desired to operate the device to bring the name of the next street orstation before the transparent member 6, the chain 23 is pulled to raise the weight 24L and rotate the sprocket wheel 21 and the sleeve 18. The

locking key 26 carried by the sprocket wheel 21 and engaged in the slot '27 in the reduced outer end 28 of the roller section 17 serves to lock said roller section 17 for rotation with the sleeve 18 and the sprocket wheel 21, thereby causing the ratchet wheel 16 to rotate the upper roller 3 and'thereby wind the cloth 4t upon said roller 3 to bring the next station name before the transparent member 6, the rotation of the upper roller 3 being caused by engagement of the pawl 13 with said ratchet wheel 16, and as soon as the sprocket chain 23-is released, the

weight 2st will descend into the guide tube and thereby cause a reverse rotation of the sleeve 18 and parts carried thereby, without causing a reverse rotation of the upper roller 3, as the ratchet wheel 16 will ride under the pawl 13. When it is desired to rewind the cloth 4: onto the lower roller 2, however, the key 26 is removed, thereby permitting rotation of the upper roller 3 and auxiliary roller section 17 and the parts car- Oopies of this patent may be obtained for ried by the same, without causing rotation of the sleeve 18 and parts carried by the same.

While the preferredembodiment of the invention has been shown and illustrated, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departingfromrthe spirit and scope of the invention as claimed or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

\Vhat is claimed is a A device of the class described comprising a lower roller, an upper roller formed of a main roller section and an auxiliary roller section in alinement with said main roller section, a spider member secured to one end of said main roller section, a peg extended centrally from and engaged through said spider member, the head of said peg being engaged against the end of said main roller section, said auxiliary roller section having one end mounted loosely upon said peg, a ratchet wheel secured against the. inner end of said auxiliary roller section and engaged around said peg, a spring actuated pawl carried by said spider member and engaged with the teeth of said ratchet wheel, a cloth Wound upon the lower roller and secured 'to the upper roller, a casing for said roll ers, the auxiliary section of the upper roller having an annular flange formed at its in ner end, a sleeve for said auxiliary roller section, said annular flange limiting inward movement ofsaid sleeve upon said auxiliary roller section, said sleeve being engaged through one end of said casing and adapted to rotate within the same, means for locking the sleeve upon said auxiliary roller section, means for preventing outward movement of said sleeve and auxiliary roller section, a sprocket wheel mounted upon said sleeve outwardly of said casing, a chain engaged around said sprocket wheel, a weight mounted upon said chain for rotating said sleeve and upper roller in one direction to wind the cloth upon said upper roller, and means for rewinding said cloth upon said lower roller.-
