Description

11, and State of new and useful Invention in Turbinel3lad- HEItBERTT. HERE, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, assis'non 'ro THE WEs'TINc: HOUSE MACHINE COMPANY, a conronarron OF PENNSYLVANIA,-
TUEBINE-BLADING.
Toa'ZZ 'w m it mag/concern Be it mown that I, HERBERT T. HERE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny Pennsylvania, have made a ing, of which the following is a specification.
This lnvention relates to blading for elastic fluid turbines and particularly to means for securing together the' outer or free ends of the blades included in one row.
An object of this invention is to provide improved means for securing together the outer ends of the blades of a row and for providing an improved shroud or cover for the row of blades.
ith certain types of blades it'is desirable to'provide a cover for the outer or free ends of the blades of a row, so that an inclosed fluid passage is provided between each two blades. In addition to this, it is essential to provide means for securing the outer ends of the blades together so that the vibration creating shocks or strains, to which the blades are subjected are resisted by several blades of a row instead of a single blade.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this application: Figure l is a side elevation of the rotor element of a turbine shown in connection with a row of blades embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmental, longitudinal, sectional view of the rotor element shown in connectionwith rotating blades mounted on the element, and an intermediate stationary blade, located between the rotating blades; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a blade, which may be employed in carrying out the illustrated embodiment of my invention.
The rotor, or blade-mounting element 4: illustrated, is provided with lateral or overhanging flanges 5 in each of which a series of blade-receiving slots 6 is cut across its lateral face. Each of the slots 6 extends radially with relation to the ce ter of ourvature of the rotor or curved b ade-mounting element and is just the proper depth and width to receive the mounting shank of a blade 7.

tion and, as 18 customary, is proyidedlwith.
a concave rear or working face and a conyex front face.
A cover or spacing piece 11 is integrally formed at the outer or free end of each blade and, as illustrated, is rectangularin shape, being so located on the blade that it extends substantially at right angles to and overhan s the concave working face. The rectangular construction employed also-causes the forward edges 01" the coverll, to over hang the convex face of the bladef These forward edges are reduced in thickness so that they are capable of being overlapped by the rear edge of an adjacent cover 11 when the blades are assembled, so that the covers 11 cotiperate to form a continuous shroud; The rectangular covers are employed on the blades to facilitate the mounting of the blades on the particular blademounting element illustrated, since the shank 8 of each blade can be inserted into one of the slots 6 and each blade can be moved independently to place, it being understood,
of course, that the slots 6 are so spaced that the covers 11 of the blades cofiperate to form the organized shroud when the blades are assembled in a row on the element.
F or the purpose of securing the separate blades together and of thereby resisting the vibration creating strains to which the blades are subjected. during the operation of the turbine. I have provided a strip of metal 12 which lies against the outer peripheral face of the organized shroud and which is adapted to be secured to each cover 11 by being spot-welded or autogenously soldered thereto. The strip 12- may be circular in form, so that all of the blades of a row are secured together, or it may be formed in arc shape sections so that groups of adjacent blades are secured together. it will, of course, be understood that my invention may be employed with any kind of a blademounting element and that it may also be employed with any type of turbine blades, and that, while I have described what 1 now consider to be a preferred form of my invention, various changes, modifications and substitutions may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth by the appended claims.
I claim "is i.
'qL'The combination W1 buckets provided with integral spacing pieces the outer ends thereof, of atie member engaging the'outer ends of the blades and Welded thereto.
2. In combination with. the blademountr 'ing element of 'a.turbine,. a row of blades 'mounted onthe element, a spacing piece in- "tegrally formed'with each of said blades, said'blades-bein'g so located on said blademounting element that the spacing pieces overlap to form an organized shroud, and a v v tie member spot welded to said pieces.
3. In combination with the blade-mount. ing element of a turbine, an annular roW of blades mounted on; the element, a spacing piece for the outer end of each blade, integrally formed on each form an organized continuous annular shroud for the row, a tie member engaging the outer peripheral face of said pieceseand secured thereto by the application of awelding heat.
in g'element of a turbine, an annular row of blades mounted on the element, a spacing a turbine blades or blade, said blades being so mounted'on said element that the l spacing pieces overlap to d combination with the blade-mount;
piece for theouter end of eachblade, in
tegrally J formed on each blade,"said blades being so mounted on said element that the spacing pieces cooperate to'iorm an organ- 7 5. In combination the blade mounta ingelement of an apparatus of the character described, blades mounted in anannular [row on said element, a shroud piece for each blade, said blades being so located on said element that shroud pieces of adj acent blades overlap to form an organized sh'roudf for a plurality of'the blades of said row, anda tie member positively secured to'eaeh shroud piece included in the organized shroud and extendlng circumferentially with relation to the shroud. i y
