Application filed December 20, 1913. Serial No. 807,955.
T alias/10m itmag "concem I Be it known that I, GEORGE J. K 1ND'r,a citizen of the United States, residing at Burr lington, in the county of Des 'Moines and 5 State of Iowa, have inventednew anduseful Improvements in Closet-Flanges, a of whichthe following is a specification-.
The invention [relates to 1 an improved closet flange and hub combinationtore the 10 proper connection and for use as a fitting between the soil piperand the clo'setibowl, the construction providing a simple type of connection which will be absolutely proof against leaking, and-securing mechanically as well as permanently sealed gas and water I I p trace of the hub element 1 and. thesoil pipe 3 beinglreserved for the usual packing.
tight, joint between all the parts thereto;
The main object ofthe present invention is the provision of a removable seat ring for cooperation with the flange proper and closet bowl gasket'and capableof being ad'- justed toinsure and maintain the necessary cooperation with the flange and hub combination topreventleakage, said flange and hub combination so constructedeas to vperunit of the flange being leveled, on the floor and securely screwed in place;
The invention in the preferred form details will bendescribed in the following specification, reference being had particu-J larly to thef accompanying drawings, in
which Figure, 1 isa view in section, partly in elevation, illustratingthe application-of the improved closet'flange, and hub combination 1 with removable ring seat andadjusting ring between the hub and soil-pipe. Fig. 2 s a perspective view of the flange proper, showing one method of locking the ring seat to the flange by lugs. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the seat ring, showing it with lugs for interlocking with the flange on the hub.
The improved connection comprises a hub proper including a ring shaped hub element 1 having a lateral flange 2, the latter constituting the floor flange, formed with a series of screw receiving openings 3, whereby the connection may be secured to the floor, after being properly leveled. The flange 2 is formed with a series of bolt receiving slots e to receive the bolts 5, by which the flange 6 of the bowl 7 is secured. The slots 4 are enlarged at one end to permit passage therethrough oit'the head of the bolt, the opposing side walls of the slot beyond the enlarged portion being upwardly convergent as at 8. The heads 90f theibolt are rectangular in outline withtheir side edges upwardly convergentso that these heads, may be lIllJlOClllCGCl into the enlarged portionsof the slots and moved longitudinally fitting ,convergentside walls ofthe-slots, as will be evident fromthe drawings. rangementpermits adjustment of the bolt to the proper position independent of the fixed position of the-flange proper, which is This arleveled independent of the soil pipe connec- 'tion. p 5 Thehub elementl 0f thefiange proper is formed at its lower edge with an inwardly pro ecting rib 10 to receive the soil pipe, the
space above the rib between the inner'sur- The: hub 'member 1 in proximateyaline-i ment with theglower edge-of the jflange 2-is cut away to form an annular ledge 11 and above the ledge the wall is for-med with v 7 locking recesses 12 having entranc eiopenngs 13 formed, by cutting awayfthe material forming theupper wall ofthe locking recesses I I,
, A seatrmglitcomprises-an annular mem oer ofa size to, overlie and bear uponthej ledge 11, theouter edgeof the member being. provided with lugs 15 adapted to engage the locking recesses, the lugs passing through the openings 13 to a position on the ledge 11, from which they are turned into" therecesses 12. The upper edges of the lugs are slightly incl ned to nduce'wedg ng action, as they areturned into the recesses, and i in the preferred form a packing ring 16 of suitable form is interposed between the bot-.
tom ot' the seat ring and ledge 11 so thatwhen said ring isturned into locking position the sealing ring is compressed to insure a retlght juncture at this point. The upper surfacev oi the seat ring is slightly concave and inwardly inclined, that is in transverse sec-, tion, this depression forming 'a seat'17 for a rounded packing ring 18 on which the ap nrooriate flan e of the bowl rests and which i r r b is put'undei' compression as the closet bowl 1 is drawn to its place, thus sealing this Juncbe constructed to permit theuse of the su'fiicient pressure upon the packing to maintain an absolutely gas-tight position.
The invention presents a 'combinationthat permits of said parts being set level in the floor even thoughthe .soil pipe is not plumb 'or perfect right angles with the floor level. adjustable feature insures a level setting of the closet bowl. The inner pros- 'tecting ring 1Oigonifthe lower end-ofthe hub 11 makes/a closed circular member around the'soil pipe to retain the packingand lead corlzing toformapermanent joint; The ref 7 formed *to provide an inner shoulder, inter- '1novable seat-permits the ready accessibility ofpacking andcorkingtools. The hubmay threaded soil pipe for] forming a threaded instead of-the cork joint or may with equal facility permit a wiped joint with the'soil epipe; V V
' .-'-Th e"-i-ni' ention' is'primarlly intended'to, 1 permit of the adjustable connection between the closet {bowl and soil pipe forming *a durableigasfand water tight joint, while at the same time permittingi ready assembling dis'corinectiom'or renewal 'of' parts, as may 6 p V i be" necessary. j I
" What reclaimed 1s a 1; a s-er flangefhub f c mbimuen, in
eluding a flange proper, bolt receiving bpeniings formed-in said fiangeprop'er, arever's -rble 'ise'at ring adaptedgto be removable lugs, said ring halving a flat under surface and ac'o'ncaveuppersurface, said ring being reversible to present a concave or a fiat packing engaging surface.
[2 A closet flange including av flange proper, bolt receiving openingsformed in said; fiange proper, and a reversible seat ring adapted to be removable and interlocking with the flange proper, said ring being removable," the upper surface of the ring being downwardly and inwardly curved while the under surface is flat so that the ring can bereversedto present a concave or flat surface to a'fiat ring gasket.
3. A flange including a ring member locking recesses formed in said member above the shoulder, and a reversible seat ring having ribs to interlock in said recesses.
4; A flange including a ring member formed-to provide an inner shoulder, interinterlocking with the flange proper by locking recesses formed in said member above the shoulder, a reversible seat ring having ribs to interlockin saidrecesses, and a gasket interposed between said ring and shoulder and -'cornpresse din theint'erlocking movement" of said ring.
