ing downwardly and outwardly from a point near the top of the casing to a point just below the bottom of the casing. The upper edge is hinged to the casing in any suitable manner and a spring 41 acts to force the plate, normally, inward toward the adjacent casing wall. The triangular space between each inclined edge of the plate 40 and the casing wall is closed by a vertical triangular wall 41-2. The bottom is closed by a triangular plate a3 having two oppositely inclined beveled or cam edges 44 and 45 each leaving a small triangular gap between its edge and the side of the casing. This gap at its widest point, is just suflicient to receive the upper end of one of the trips 15 or 16 which, as the train travels forward, engages the cam edge and forces the shield outwardly until it engages and actuates the plate 14 or the arm 2. The shield then snaps shut again, the bottom 43 extending beneath the bottom of the casing. The cap 105, previously mentioned, keeps the slot of the bolt 104 closed weather proof.

In a device of the character described, a casing, a compressed air pipe partly contained therein, a valve in the said pipe, a branch pipe connected to the compressed air pipe above the valve, a valve in the branch pipe, lever and trip means for opening the valve in the branch pipe, lever and trip means for opening the valve in the compressed air pipe, and means for preventing the opening of the valve in the compressed air pipe, comprising, a cylinder contained in the casing, a piston operative therein, a pipe connected to a source of compressed air supply and to the bottom of the cylinder, a yoke mounted on the upper end of the piston, a chain connecting one side of the yoke to the valve in the branch pipe, a spring connection between the outer side of the yoke and the bottom of the casing, means for admitting compressed air to the pipe connected to the bottom of the cylinder, and means Y a i 1,149,251
