SHUTTLE. I
To all whom it may concern;
Be it; known, that I, JEAN. 13.; fDAUD LIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, county of Bristol, Comm0nwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttics, of which the following is a speclficav This invention relates to hand threading shuttles and particularly'to a guard for the threading eye of such'a shuttle. to prevent I dethreading during the run.
The present {invention contemplates a combined eye guard and tensinirin'gkievice made of a single lengtliu of"material and adapted to direchthe threadinto the eye and to positively prevent "improper; escape of the thread therefrom while maintaining uniform tension on it: during. the run of the shuttle.
The present device is adapted to be used in conjunction with a separate pin or. post forming part of the tension element 311C110- cated just behind saidelement, and past which the thread runs, 1
The constructionv and operation of my device will be more fully disclosed in the specification that follows.
In the drawings forming. a part of that specification I have shown a threadgnard which not only clearly illustrates the prin'- ciples of my invention but is in itself a form found satisfactory in use and Well adapted to the requirements of manufacture. I
Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are correspondingly applied and in the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the threading. end of a shuttle equipped with my invention, the shuttle body being partially broken away for purposes of illustration. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the thread guard removed from the shuttle, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through' the eye.
The shuttle body 1 may be of any construction having a bobbin chamber 2 in on theshuttle top. The slot 6 CODILQCW the tle.

said eye at a point near its top;
In order-to facilitate entry of. the thread nto the slot 5 and to preventdethreading of the shuttle by reason of theballooning' tendency of the thread during the run of the shuttle, a guide and guard member 12 of any desired type may overlie the slot 5.
This device is preferabl ofth'e type shown lIl Pfltellt #l gjfie flf y I p j Thegeombiiied threadguard and tension-,
ends to form a thread tensioning device .and so shilbedat its delivery end as to guldethe thread from the slot 6 into the eye 4 and to prevent escape of the thread back into said slot. The device consists of a shank 7 extending transversely across the shuttle and preferably disposedbelow the plane of entry of the threading slot 6 into the eye4.
The free end of the shank 7 is clenched into the wood of the shuttle to lockthe guard in,
place The shank 7 at its opposite end is bent over upon itself to form a loop 8 substantially conforming to the contour of the delivery end of the eye 4. The free end of this loop is carried upwardly to a. point above the plane of the shank 7 and slightly above the plane of entry of the slot 6 into located within the eye 5 between the point of entry of the slot 5 and the loop end 8 of the shank. Just beyond the tilrnlO, a pin 11 is driven into the wood of the shut- This pin serves as a guide post past which the thread is drawn and with the bend 10 provides a thread tensioning device. The shank 7 passes between the pin 11 and the exit end of the bobbin chamber and is bent around said pin and continues across the shuttle to theopposite side as a relatively straight portion. The thread from thebobbin chamber runs over a part of thisbar to the pin 11.
In use, the thread from the slot 6 is. de-
