To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, IvA'N P. VUoRINovro, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Indiana Harbor, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pad locks and more particularly to a keyless pad lock.
The invention has for its object to provide a lock of generally improved and simplified construction embodying a pivoted shackle adapted to be retained in closed position by a sliding tumbler operable by gravity when the lock is moved into proper position.
Another object is the provision of a pad lock embodying a gravity operable sliding for locking the sliding tumbler against movement.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel construction,
arrangement andformation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates the body of the lock having a plurality of recesses therein for receiving the parts of the lock mechanism which are covered by the cover or front plate 11 suitably secured to the front face of the body 10. The top of the body 10 is formed with recesses receiving'the opposite ends of the curved shackle 12, one end of which is enlarged and apertured, as indicated at 13, to receive the pivot pin 14 secured to the rear wall of the body 10 and the cover plate 11. The enlarged end 13 of the shackle is formed with a radially extending pin 15 over which is engaged one end of a coil spring 16 seated in a suitable recess in the body 10 and normally tending to swing the pivoted shackle 12 to open position. The opposite end of the shackle is formed with a transverse opening 17 adapted to receive thesliding tumbler to be hereinafter described.
The body 10 is formed with a diagonal chamber or recess 18 extending in alinement with the aperture 17 in the free end of the shackle and intersecting the recess in the body receiving the free end of said shackle. A tumbler 19 is slidably mounted in the diagonal recess or chamber 18 and is adapted, when the lock is tilted, to slide through the aperture 17 in the free end of the shackle 12 to lock the latter in closed position. A second chamber or recess 20 is formed in the body 10 at right angles to the recess 18 and receives the slidable locking bar 21 havmg a pair of spaced teeth22 formed laterally thereof. A; lever 24 is pivoted at 25 in the body 10 and the short end thereof engages the free extremity of the pivoted shackle 12 and the long end or arm thereof is normally retained in inwardly extended posi tion by the tension of a spring 25. The long end of the lever is also normally retained in the path of the enlarged and weighted end of a pawl 26 pivotally secured at 27 in the body or casing 10 and having a tooth 28 engaging between the teeth 22 of the slidable locking bar 21.
In use, when it is desired to release the pivoted shackle 12, the latter is movedinwardlya short distance on its pivotal axis 14 thus swinging the lever 24 upon its axis 25, movingthe long end thereof out of the path of the weighted enlargement 26 of the pawl. The pad lock is subsequently inverted and the weight 26 swings the tooth 28 of the pawl by gravity into mesh with the teeth 22 of the bar 21, thus sliding the latter longitudinally to permit the sliding tumbler 21 to move inwardly. It will be understood that when the lever 24 is in normal position the long end thereof is disposed in the path of the weighted end 26 of the pawl and the latter is not permitted sufficient movement to operate the slide bar 21. By tilting the pad lock in the proper What I claim is:
1. A pad lock comprising a body, a curved shackle pivotally secured at one end in said body, a sliding tumbler securing the free end of said shackle in closed position, and spring means connected directly with and normally tending to open said shackle, and retaining the latter in frictional engagement with said sliding tumbler to prevent loose movement thereof.
2. A pad lock comprising a body, a curved shackle pivotally. secured at one end in. said body, means normally tending to open said shackle, a sliding tumbler for locking the free end of said shackle in closed position, a slide bar for retaining said sliding tumbler in extended or locked position, gravity operable pawl controlling said slide bar, and
means controlled by the free end of said shackle for limiting the movement of said pawl. I
3. A pad lock comprising a body, a
.shackle pivotally secured at one end to said body, a sliding tumbler adapted to cooperate with the free end of said shackle to lock the latter in closed position, a slidable bar for locking said sliding tumbler in locked position, gravity operable means associated with said slidable bar, and spring means controlled by the free end of said shackle forflimiting the movement of said gravity operable means. sliding tumbler for engaging and locking the free end of said shackle in closed position, a slidable bar for locking said tumbler in extended or locked position, gravity operable means associated with said slidable bar, a lever pivotally mounted in said body for limiting the movement of said gravity operable means, and means normally retaining said pivoted lever in the path of said gravity operable means.
5., A pad lock comprising a body, a shackle pivotally secured in said body, a sliding tumbler adapted to cooperate with the free end of said shackle to lock the latter in closed position, a slidable bar for looking the tumbler in locked or extended position, gravity operable means associated with said sliding bar, a lever pivotally mounted in said body engaged at one end with and operable by the. free end of saidshackle and having the opposite end disposed in the path of said gravity operable means-to limit the movement of the latter, and means normally retaining the end of said lever in the path of said gravity operable means.
