a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and .State of New York, have invented certain new and useul'mprovements in Coinbined 'Type- Writing and Computing Machines, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to the type of com# hined typewriting and `computing'machines in Awhich a computing Vcarriage is intermit tently connected to the carriage of a typewriter, to travel therewith. A hook is connected tothe computing carriage, and is adapted. to engage any of a series of lugs placed upon the typewriter carriage, which is power-driven. Mechanism is provided r'or automatically disconnecting said hook from. the lugs in succession at certain oints in the travel of the typewriter and computing carriages. A machine of this type is illustrated in the pending-application of f'alter.`Wright, No. 574,813, tiled August l, 1910. The present invention relates to the hook used in this class of machines.
One object of the invention is to improve the means for automatically disconnecting the hook, so that such disconnection may be effected Without' consumingan undue portion of the carriage driving power. To this end I provide a lever -carrying a roll or rollercam, which is engaged bythe lug, which is on the typewriter carriage. The provision of the roller cam renders the releasing action very light or easy. This releasing lever extends to the hook and bears upon a roll which is carried on said hook. Hence at the hook-releasing operation, the entire function is performed through rollercontacts, so that 'friction and binding are-reduced or eliminated, and the lhook is promptly released, and the paper carriage is not retarded in its travel. Provision is also made for having the roller cam on the releasing lever normally out of' the path of the carriage lugs.
Another feature of the invention consists of means for locking the hook out o1' use,

A master wheel, in the form of teeth or pins 1, projecting from a.hub 2, is carried upon an arbor 3, which extends from an end plate 4 o'a computing carriage. The master wheel engages internal gears 5 upon computing wheels G, of which one is shown; said computing wheels engaging gears 7 provided'upon dial wheelsS.
The computing carriage has a pin 9 engaging a slot l() on thevforward end of a lever ll of the first order, which isfulcrumed at l2 upon the framework of they machine, and at its rear end has a slot 13 to engage apin l-- Iprojecting down from a block 15, in which is ixed one end of a stem 16 of a hook 17. This hook is lifted by a spring 18 (pressing up. againstsaid stem) into engagement with any of a series of lugs 1.9, adjustable along a rack 20, which is connected to or orms part ofthe paper carriage of the typewriting machine; said paper carriage driven in the direction shown i l, which is a rear view.4 As the carriage fee or" the lug 19 encounters a roll or roller cam 2l which is pivoted atEZQ upony a lever 23, the latter fulcrumed at 24 upont'he frames along, the bottom edge f work and having a stop .arm 25 to engage a stop 2G also on the framework. They become less slippery, either by ac'ci'uniilation of dirt from the surrounding air, by incipient rust, or from some other cause.. These objections and draw-backs 1 avoid in my construction.

lVhen it is desired to silence the ho'ok 17, the button 31, Fig. 5, is turned, sai'd button being fixed upon the projecting end of a short shaft and acam 33 projecting from said shaft above the stein 16 of the hook and .moved by said button from the idle position at Fig.- l to eliective position at Fig. t. frictionl spring 3st forks the shaft and presses against the hub of the button 3l,- s0 as to hold thelatter frictionally with the cam or pin 33 both in the effective position at Fig'. Having 'thus described my invention, claim:
