* a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Applying Pressure; and l do hereby declare the following to be a iull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others` skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to devices for applying pressure and is adapted for use in connection with various forms of clamping devices, such as vises, chucks, qcfins and the like. The invention is directed to the provision of a pressurefapplying device so constructed that it will adapt itself automatically for equalization or for a desired distribution of pressure along the length of the device.
While my invention is adapted for use in connection with clamping devices varying widely in their construction and in the relations in which they are used, it isof special utility in connection with printing apparatus eithe as a quoin or as a spacing member used in combination with a quoin to lock a form of type in a chase.
The invention involves the provision ofv a pressare-applying device having a plurality of contact members distributed along the length of the device and means for causing' a differential, lateral movement of these contact members whereby they'will be brought to bear upon a coactii'ig surface with equal pressure or with ]v)i'essure varying in a predetermined degree.l 5. i A' y ln accordance with ythe .p 4fer-red embodiment of theinvention, thefpressure device consists of a frame having a plurality of contact members therein, each of which presents a curved surface, these members being adapted to Abemoved laterally so that some or ally of .-tliein Iare projected more or less from the side'of the frame into engagement with the coating ,.surface. l/Vhen con'- 'structed in .the form of a quoin, the frame is preferably of tubular form, rectangular in cross-section and having one side or two oppositesides cut away to permitofprojecting the contact members located within the frame through the sides of the frame.

At one or both ends of the device, means are provided for subjecting the contact members to pressure in the direction of the length of the device so as to cause them, or certain of them, to be projected laterally through an open side of the device into contact with a surface extending substantially parallel to the device.
With this form of pressure-applying device, the several Contact members will. move outwardly to such extent as is necessary to cause them to engage the co-acting surface whether the latter be exactly parallel to the pressure-applying device or not. This characteristic makes the device of special value as a quoin or piece of furniture for use in connection with a chase which has become slightly sprung. Also, the several contact members may be caused to move so as to equalize the pressure thereof upon the coacting surface. Referring to these drawings, the device consists of a tubular frame or casing k7 of i rectangular cross-section. .These rollers 9 have axially disposed pins A casing/. This consists of a screw 12 threaded into an opening in the end of the casing 7 and having a polygonal head oui-.sidev the casing. The end of the screw 12 engages a hearing block 13 provided .with a curved face to coac't with the `4end roller 10.
With this form of pressure-applying (ievice, the screw 12 may be screwed up so as to subject the rollers 9 and 10 to pressure in the direction fof the length of the ldevice and thus cause the alternate rollers 9-to be projected laterally through the opening in the side of the casing 7 as shown in Fig. 1. The contact members 9 will thus be caused to move laterally into engagement with a coacting surface andto engage that surface with the desired degree of pressure.
If that surface be parallel to the device, all of the rollers 9 will be projected laterally the same amount and will exert equal pressure upon the surface. Ifthe 'surface be out of parallelisrn with the device, certain of the contact members 9 will move laterally to a greater extent than others, and if all of them b e of the same'vdiameter as shown in Fig. 1, they will exert substantially equal pressure upon' the surface.
In Fig. Ll, the device is shown as a quoin employed in a chase 14 for locking a form of type 15 therein. ln this figure, the chase 14 is shown as having one side slightly sprung so thatl the inner wall of. that side is not exactly parallel to the quoin. Because of this, certain of the contact members 9 'are shown as having been projected laterally to a greater extent than others to compensa for the variation in the distance between the quoin and the wall of the chase at different points along the length of the quoin.

A device for applying pressure comprising a casing of rectangular cross-section having lengthwise openings in opposite sides thereof, a plurality of movable members lying within `the casing and disposed in substantial alinementlengthwise thereof, and a screw operable from outside the casing for 'subjecting said members to pressure in the direction of the length of the casing, said members being so shaped that when subjected to pressure by the screw, they are moved laterally so that some of them are projected through the opening in one side of the casing and some ot' them through the opening in the opposite side; substantially as described.
7. A device tor applying pressure comprising a casing of rectangular cross-section having a lengthwise opening in one side thereof, a plurality otmovable members within the casing of circular form and of dill'erent diameters and a screw operable. from outside the casing for subjecting the Y members to pressure lengthwise ot' the casing whereby certain of the members are moved-laterally into positions in which they project through the open side of the casing; substantially as described.
