To allwhomz't may concerns Be it known that I, EPHRAIM H. RoDnN,
a citizen 'ofthe United States, residing at.
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State .of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mailing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to mailing devices or envelops constructed in such a manner that may be used in connection with an opening device in the form of a stiff cardboard or other relatively stifi material in which, when the severing of the envelop is begun, a suitable cutting surface or surfaces on the opening device will complete the opening of the envelop to remove the contents thereof.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description, which is directed to the preferred embodiment of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification.
In the said drawing,-Figure 1 is a view of the front side of an envelop, showing the manner in which a portion of the end to be opened is provided with cuts or slits in the nature of elongated perforations, by which the operator may remove a portion of the envelop surrounded by the said slots or perforations by a pull on the same with his hand, and without the use of any instrument; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the envelop in the act of being opened, almost the entire end'being severed from the body of the envelop; Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate modified forms of the invention, the departure from the form of construction of Figs. 1 and 2 being merely in the manner of perforating the portion of the envelop which is detachable in the opening operation.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the body of the envelop is designated by the reference character 10, while an opening device of relatively stiff cardboard is indicated by the reference character 11, Fig. 2. This member 11 is preferably of a stiff cardboard, of a size of the interior of the envelop, except that at one end adjacent the end of the envelop desired to be opened the rectangular corners are cut on angular lines, as indicated at 11*, Fig. 2. The envelop adjacent one end is provided with a portion 10 that is semi-circular in form, being bounded by a plurality of I parallel perforations eX-tending through both walls of the envelop and arranged in the manner of the perforations indicated :byFlEhBTBIGIGIICB character 10, Fig. l. The
perforations 10", when arranged in the semicircular arrangement and spaced apart as shown in Fig. 1, will, when a pull is made upon the portion 10 by grasping the same between the thumb and finger or fingers of the operators hand, fracture or tear upon the lines of fracture as indicated by the drawing, Fig. 2., When the part 10 fractures and separates from the body of the envelop, the insert or opening device 11 may then be pulled outwardly and the angular edges 11 will sever or fracture the end of the envelop beyond the opening made by the separation of the part 10 from the body of the'envelop, after which the contents of the envelop may be removed, if the same have not been removed by the pulling out of the cutting insert 11. Although the preferred construction is that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it is found that the part 10, which is to be separated from the body of the envelop by a-pull, may be perforated in the manner shown, for example, in Figs. 3 and 4, and fair results secured, although for most conditions the manner of perforation shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is to be preferred. In Fig. 3, the envelop is indicated by the reference character 13, and the perforations are shown at 13*, the removable portion being indicated at 13 In Fig. 4, the envelop 14 is shown provided with a detachable portion 14 surrounded by a plurality of very closely spaced small perforations 13 extending through both walls of the envelop, so that by tearing out the portions 13 and 13 thus perforated the pointed end of the inserts 11 of Figs. 3 and 4 may be caused to protrude, and a further pull on the insert will cause the angular edges thereof to fracture the envelop walls from the detachable sections to the corners.
In order that the invention might be understood, the details of preferred embodiments have been shown and described, and it will be apparent that persons skilled in the art may resort to various modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
In combination, an envelop having a detachable portion bounded by a line of perforations beginning and ending in one edge of the enirelop and extending throligh the front and back thereof, and an insert in being an edge on the insert at each end of said first mentioned edge thereof" disposed at an angle to the latter and providing 10 means for severing the remainder of said Copies of this patent may beobtained'for five cents each, by addressing Y i 1 I Washington,-D.G.f
edge of the envelop after the detachable portion is removed,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to. this specification, in the presence p two subscribing Witnesses, on this 25th 15 dayofApril, A. D. 1914.
