- Be it known that I, WILLIAM U. GRIF- FI'IHS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city andcounty' of Philadelphia, State ofiPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Closing Valves for VVater-Closets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for automatically closing the valve which controls the flow'of water from a source of supply to the flush tank ofa water closet apparatus; and also for controlling the opening and closingof a valve which controls the passage through which the waste water is allowed to escape fromthe pipe which discharges the water intothe hopper.
My invention is particularly applicable to water closet apparatus in which the flush tank is allowed to remain empty except at such times as it is desired to flush the water closet hopper. 1
One of the objects of my invention isto provide a construction 'of the character named in which automatically operating means for closingthe valves as stated may be employed which is positive in action and which may be reliedupon at all times to fulfil its purpose and function. p

In order to prevent the overflow of the flush tank 3 I have provided an overflow pipe 19 the upper end of which is located a short distance below the upper edge of the tank. Normally, and when not in use, the seat 4 occupies the position shown in Fig. 1 in which it is inclined upwardly from its hinged connection at the rear of the hopper or basin 1 toward the front of said hopper or basin, and is located a short distance above the upper edge thereof,the distance between the seat and the upper edge of the hopper decreasing from front to rear as shown. When the seat is depressed sothat it rests against the upper edge of the hopper or basin 1, the rearwardly projecting arm 5 moves upwardly and lifts the rod 8 to close thevalve 1 5.
I A valvecontrolling rod 20 supported and guided in and by a short bracket 21 is in contact at one end with said seat and at the other end is connected to one end 22 of a lever 23 pivoted at 24 on a bracket 25 extending, in the construction shown, from a valve casing 26. The portion of the said le ver 23 upon the opposite side of its pivot 24 extends or passes through an opening 28 in a cam support 29 and at a point beyond said cam support is provided with a weight 30. The valve casing 26 is provided with an opening 31 surrounded by a flange 35 internally screw -threaded to receive a screwthreaded gland 36. Between the inner end of the said gland andthe said casing 26 and inside of said flange 35, packing material 37 is provided which surrounds the said cam support 29. The'said gland is provided with an opening 38 through which and the opening 31 in the casing the support 29 passes into the valvecasing. A wedge-shaped cam 40 on the support 29 is in contact with a valve 41 and isadapted to cause movement thereof to close the water supply pipe 42 and prevent the issuing of water therefrom into the casing 26 and thence through the pipe 43 into the-flush tank-3. In the construction, as illustrated, the cam 40 is moved downwardly in order to closethe valve 41 but it willbe understood by those skilled in the art that the arrangement may be readily alteredso that a movement of the cam in a different direction A, would cause the same result. dWhenthe effectively close the same.

The casing 26 is provided with. a port 45 which communicates with awaste pipe 46 having connection with a sewage pipe or conduit (not shown 29 is provided with a lateral projection 47 which is integral therewith or otherwise connected thereto, which projection extends between guides 48 upon a side of the casing 26. A washer of rubber or other suitable material 49 on the projection 46 is adapted to. be seated over the port 45-and close the same when the cam support 29 is raised by means of the lever 23 or otherwise. In its movement, the support 29 is guided by its bearing consisting of the gland 36 and the sides of the opening 31, the contact of the cam 40'with the valve 41, and the guides 48. By so guiding the support 29 the washer 49 is seated squarely over the port 45 so as to The base 50 of the casing bymeans of which thebottom is closed is secured to and is supported upon any suitable support (not shown). 2
In operation it will be understood that when the seat 4 is depressed'the rod 20 is also depressed, causing movement of the lever 23 about its pivot 24 to raise the cam support 29 and permit the pressure of the water from within the water supply pipe 42 to open the valve 41 and permit the issue of water from the pipe 42 into the casing 26 and thence. through the pipe 43 into the tank 3. At the same time that the valve 41 is opened the washer 48 moves into position over the port 45 and closes the same. --When the seat 4'is permitted to return to the position as illustrated in Fig. 1, the weight 30 causes movement of the lever 23 about its pivot 24 to depress thecam support 29 and cause closure of the valve 41 and at the same time remove the washer 48 from the port 45 to open the pipe 46 and permit the water which is in the pipe 43 and in the upper portion of the casing 26 to escape through the pipe 46 into the sewage pipe or conduit. there is a pressure of reaction against the same by the valve 41 so that the end of the projection 47 is wedged or pressedagainst the side of the valve casing between the guides 48. claim 1. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a casing having an inlet port through which water enters the said casing, an outlet port through which water issues from said casing on its way to any desired point,and also a. waste water port through which waste water issues from said casing, a valve for opening and closing the inlet port, a valve for openingand closing the waste water port, a support for said waste water valve said support having means for controlling said inlet valve, a pivoted lever having connection with the said valve support, and automatically operating means having connection with the said support for causing movement thereof to cause the opening and closing of said valves.

Ina device of the character described, the combination of a valve casing having a valve for controlling the supply of liquid theretoand alsohaving a waste water. opening leading therefrom, a longitudinally movable rod extending through said casing" and having one endprojecting therefrom, the said rod having a valvethereon for closing said waste water opening and also having a wedge-shaped cam thereon for controlling the said valve and the said valve casinghaving means for supporting and guiding the said rod, a lever pivotally supportedintermediate its ends and having connection upon one sideof its pivot with the projecting end of the said longitudinally movable rod and having a weight secured thereto uponthe same side of its pivot for holding the said rod indepressed position, and means for acting upon the portion, of the said lever uponthe opposite side of its pivot for causing movement of the said rod in opposition to the action of the said weight whereby the said first mentioned valve may be permitted to open and whereby the valve on said rod is moved into position to close said waste water opening.
