in connection with the accompanying drawings,-is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in capsule holders for temporarily gripping and holding breakableimedi'cine capsules or conceals preparatory to extracb ing the contents therefrom for dermic injections or other purposes.-
For hygienic reasons and safety,*the more medicines, such asthose-whi'ch are applied to patients hypodermically, are usually put up and sold to physicians and surgeons in small quantities in hermetically sealed tubes or conceals of glass or other fragile or easily breakable substance and are kept in this hermetically sealed condition until needed for use and are then broken at one end sufficiently toallow the contents to be withdrawn by a hypodermic syringe or needle by which they'are injected into the patient without liability of contamination with foreign matter, and in view of the relatively small size of such capsules or conceals, the physicians and surgeons have considerable difficulty in holding them "in proper position to extract the contents without liability of dropping them or wasting such contents.
The main object, therefore, of my inven= tion is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive device for temporarily holding these conceals while breaking the ends thereof and withdrawing their contentswithout liability of dropping the same or wasting the contents.
Another object is to enable the whole device to be tilted to different angles to conform to the position or convenience of the user in withdrawing the medicine from the conceal or capsule.
Other objects and uses relating to specific parts of the device will be brought out in the following description.
In the drawings-Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, a top plan and a side elevation of a capsule holder embodying the various features of my invention, the gripping device being shown by dotted lines in different positions of adjustment, and the capsule being use in hypoalso indicatedby dotted lines as being held by the gripping jaws. Fig. 3 is'a -vertical sectional view of the-same device taken on line 3+3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is -an-elevation partly in section of a'modified form of capsule holder in which the gripping device is rigidly secured to its/supporting base.
The preferred form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3inclusive, comprises a supportingbaseorstzindard 1 and a capsule holder 2- adjustably mounted thereon, and'hel'd inits adjusted position by means-of "a-clamp'ing bolt 3' and handnut l. The bottom'of the standard 1- is relatively broad and adapted to rest upona table orother'suitable support, the upper portion thereof being reduced and provided at its upper end with a transverse bolt opening 5- fo'r receiving theclamping bolt 3 which extends'beyond opposite sides of thestandard and is provided at one end'witha vertical opening -'6-- for receiving an upright rod --7- forming a part of the capsule holder, the opposite end of aidbolt being threaded and engaged by the and-nut '4, thus permitting the rod 7' to be drawn tightly against the adj acent side of the standard -1 when the nut 4 is tightened and also permitting said rodto be adjusted vertically when thenut is loosened.
Secured tc-the upper end of the rod 7- having a central aperture 13 throu h which the supporting rod 7 extends and is free to slide therein. The upper portion as 11-- of the U-shape bar 11 together with the plate 8 constitutes gripping jaws between which the conceal or capsule ct is yieldingly held by a coil spring --13 surrounding the rod between the plates 8- and -12- and having its opposite ends abutting against said plates, the spring being tensioned to normally force the gripping jaws toward each other, or rather to force the U-shape bar v+a; in operative position. The bolt -3- is loosely mounted in the aperture 5 so as to permit it together 1 with the capsule gripping device to turn to different angles about the'axis of the ,bolt to bring the capsule into any convenient po# sition to any angle as may be most convenient to the physician, surgeon or other operator. In somev instances, however, as shown in Fig. 4:, the lower end of the rod as 7 may be rigidly secured in the upper end of a supportingjbase or standard 1,-but otherwise, the capsule gripping device is substantially -the samev as that shown in Figs. 1,2 and 3. It is also evident that the gripping device. including the rod 7 may be turned in the aperture 6 when the nut is loosened. These cap-' sules are usually made of glass or other fragile oreasily breakable material and l1ermetically sealed contents, thereby preventing any possibility of contamination of-th'e Q medicine with foreign-matter. r
. iWhen it isdesired to use the contents of a capsule or conceal, the operator lifts the plate 12 and 7 parts carried .thereby by hand until the upper jaw 11 is raised a suiiicient distance above the plate '8 to allow the. insertion of'the capsule into the groove -9, whereupon the upward pressure on the plate is relieved and the spring 13 returns it together with the U-shape [bar 11 and jaw -11 until the jaw ,11- engages the periphery of the capsule to frictionally hold it to its seat 9. One end of the capsule may then be broken off by filing thevsame at the point where it is Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I). 6.? V v I desired to break, after which 'contents may be withdrawn by a hypodermic syringe and applied to the'patient in the well known manner.
The operation of my invention will now jawon one end, a plateslidableon the rod,
a gripping vmember extending across the ,openside of the groove attached to said sliding plate, and a spring interposed bebe: readily understood by reference to the V foregoing description and the accompany V a-rod having a V-shape tween said plate and jawfor forcing the aw and gripping member toward each other to grip a capsule. V
2. In. a device for temporarily holding medicine capsules or conceals, a rod, a jaw secured to one end of the rod and provided with a groove in its outer end face and with recesses in itsopposite edges, a U-shape bar extending across the open side of the groove and having its opposite arms guided in the recesses, a plate slidable lengthwise of and upon the rod and secured to the ends of the bar, and a coil. spring surrounding the rod and havingits ends abutting against the .plate and jaw respectively for forcingthe jaw toward theportionof thebar which extends across the groove. f c
