Flann- RICK, citizen of the United States, reslding atKenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fabric-Making Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanylng-drawings,- forming a part of this specification. f' l I My invention relates to improvements 1n machines for making metal fabric.
Among the "salient" objects of the invention are, to provide; an automatic machine for buildingfabric from separate links; to provide in a' machine for making wire link fabric composed of interengaged identical hooked links, mechanism for directly hooking partially completed links into engagement with .the end of' a. previously completed fabric length; to provide in a machine of the class described, mechanism for successively adding links-to the ends of a plurality of chains of which the completed fabric iscomposed; to provide'in a machine of the class described, mechanism for directly engaging the fabric units with the fabric units of a completed fabric composed of a series of longitudinal chains of interengaged fabric units; toprovide a machine of the general type described in which 'incomplete links of the fabric are first engaged with the completed links constituting part of the previously formed fabric and afterward completed and thereby locked in position in the fabric; to provide a machine for making an indefinite length of wire link fabric composed of a series of longitudinal chains parallel with the length of the fabric and suitably held together to prevent the separation of the adjacent chains; to provide a machine of the type last described in which links are directly engaged with and added to the ends of the chains of the previously formed fabric;
. and, in general, to provide an improved fab ric-making machine of. the character referred to.

These .units may 'be separately made from the machine if desired, though the invention is not to be limited to such separate operation, but however made, such units are received at the point indicated by the arrow 20 in Fig. 2.where they are engaged and moved by a feeding chain 21 to be as .sembledLin accordance with my invention.

The. units 16 are the application of the bands 19-thereto'to form the units into the rows, which rows areto be formed into the fabric. The chain 21 is intermittently moved in by the arrow in Fig.
2, such intermittent movement being efiected by a cam-24 which operates ,upon a cam roller 25 mounted, upon the inner end of an I its neighbors by a distance,

One form of such feeding mechanism ineludes (Figs. 1, 2 10 and 13) a carriage 45 adapted to reciprocate upon slide guides 46 and having an outsetting shelf 47 upon which the strip 33 may rest. This carriage (fixed upon the also pivotally supports a friction finger 48 engageable with the top of the strip and whose cam roller 37*. is oper This plunger pressed into such engagement by a spring 49. A cam lever 50 engages an extension 51 of the carriage 45 for moving the carriage toward the cutting element 34 the requisite distance, upon for this purpose by a cam portion 52, fixed with respect to the cam element 39,
through the intermediation of a cam roller 53 carried upon the cam lever 50. When 33 has been sufficiently advanced. the cutting elements 34 and 35 operate to cut off the length necessary to form the desired band 19. The carriage45 is withdrawn by a spring 54, the friction finger 48 trailing over the strip 33 which is held from moving backwardly by means of a stationarily mounted finger 55 spring-pressed in a direction similarto'that inwhich finger 48 isv spring-pressed. The portion cut from the strip 33 is held in a bending anvil 56 which becomes interposed between the bending elements 34 and 36 when these bending elements the cam lever 50 being operated the full portion has been formed into a U and this U- shaped portion has been properly received between the'bending elements 34 and 36 the bending anvil is withdrawn.
- The mechanism for effecting the withdrawal of the bending anvil 56 desirably includes the plunger 37 which is chamfered at 58 to engage a chamfered portion 59 of the bending anvil 56 when the plunger 37 descends thereby to thrust the bending anvil clear of the path of the plunger 37. The mechanism for restoring the bending anvil 56 to that position in which the folders 34 and 36 may operate upon the strip portion held by the bending anvil includes a centrally pivoted lever 60 having an inclined portion 61 engaged by an inclined portion 62 uponthe plunger 37 when this plunger After the plunger 37 has been withdrawn the die 29 is moved backwardly by the compression spring 63, the cam 64 which previously operated upon the cam roller 65 carried by the cam lever 66 for moving the die 29 forwardly into position now being so placed to ermit the .spring 63 to effect such with grawal of the die 29. When the die 29 is thus positioned the chain stop 28 carried thereby is withdrawn from the path of the link projection 30 previously engaged thereby after which the chain 21 may be advanced the space of another fabric unit 16 whereupon the die 29 is again advanced and another band 19 is again formed in the manner quota of fabric units has not, as yet, been assembled in a unit row.
A predetermined number of fabric units having been assembled into a fabric row, the next band forming operation is omitted and the formed fabric row is dislodged from the chain 21 preferably during the process of being united with another similarly formed fabric row. I preferably employ the same control mechanism for omittin the band formin function when the deslred number of fa ric units have been assembled in one row and for also dislodging a formed row from the carrier chain 21, though the latter function is preferably performed at a later period and after a number of units in a new fabric unit row has been united. The omission of the band-forming function is preferably accomplished by retaining the carriage 45 in its advanced position toward the cutter 34, 35 a sufiicient length of time for thispurpose. That is the return of the carriage 45 away from the . cutter 34, 35 is delayed a length of time previously described, assuming that front end of the cam lever 50 in its forward position so that the spring 54 cannot return the carriage 45. Normally the holding'dog 68 is withdrawn from the range of the pin 67, this dog being presented-within range of this pin, for the purpose of holding the carriage 45 in its forward position, by means of a lug 69 mounted upon the ratchet wheel 70 (Fig. 7 the ratchet wheel 70 having as many teeth as there are links in a row, this, ratchet wheel being turned one tooth upon each union of adjacent units. The ratchet wheel is turned by means of a pin 71 upon the cam '24, this pin engaging the downwardly projecting arm 72 of the bell crank lever 73 which carries upon its other arm an {actuating pawl 74 which is caused to move one step each time the pin 71 strikes the bell crank at 72. The lug 69 is thus moved step by step toward an arm 75 fixed with respect to the arm 68. When the element 69 strikes the element 75 it moves the path of the pin thereby to 45 in its forward position.

The hammer 77 is vertically reciprocable, being positively driven in both directions by rollers 79 between which a driven eccentric 80 is interposed, this eccentric being keyed upon shaft 81 to impart motion to another eccentric similarly keyed upon shaft 81 at the other side of the hammer 77 in Fig. 9 there to operate upon rollers similar to rollers 79 similarly related to the ham mer 77. i

The U- shaped stripper 91 is operated by a pair of levers 93 fixed with respect to a common lever 94, these levers being pivotally mounted upon a shaft 95. The lever 9i carries a cam 97 to elevate the levers .93 to operate the stripper 91, the
. levers 93 being sufficiently weighted to .en-
able the stripper 91 to descend when permitted-so to do by the cam 97.

When the cams 83 and 97 are to operate, the lever 105 is lifted by the spring 109, the nose 107 then being in register with the notch 110 in the periphery of the disk 108, a result which occurs after a number of'units in a new row have been united,- the completely formed row being advanced several unit spaces before it is assembled with or j'oinedto a precedingly formed row and stripped-from the chain 21. When the lever 105 is thus lifted gagement with-the pin102 so that this pin is pressed-to the left by the spring 103 and is brought into engagement with the-cam 2 1 fixed upon the shaft 40. The shaft 40 now communicates rotary motion to the quill shaft 101 upon which the cams 83 and 97 are fixed whereby the cams 83 and 97 are operated. The extreme lower point of the inclined portion 106 is always in line with the slot or notch in the right hand end of the pin 102 irre spective of the position of this pin so that theinclined portion 106 is operative to retract the pin 102 against the force of the spring 104 after the nose 107 has ridden out of the notch 110, the cams ,83 and 97 then being .uncoupled and remaining uncoupled until a newly formed row of fabric units is to be discharged from the chain 21. Both of the cams 80 are keyed upon shaft 81, which has no connection with the shaft 40,but is. driven by a shift-pin 111 slidably mounted in the body of the cams 83 and 97, said pin 111 engaging an aperture in the side bf the left-hand cam 80. When the ratchet wheel 112 is being moved during the last step of its cycle, the lug 117 carried by the ratchet wheel strikes the nose 118 projecting upwardly from a cam lever 119 to depress this cam lever=1(which is'normally elevated by a spring 120) whereby the cam end 121 of the lever 119 is brought into the path of slot 122 in the pin 111 so that the pin and cam lever are engaged byJthe moving cams 83 and 97, the cam lever thereby effecting the withdrawal of the pin 111 against the force of the spring 123 that is normally effective in malntaining'the cams 83 and 97 in fixed relation with the'left hand cam 80. After the cams 80hav'e been uncoupled from the cams an omission of 83 and 97 a sufficient length of timeto effect 77, the lug l17is brought by the next step of the wheel 112 out of engagement with the pin 116 whereupon the spring120 will withdraw the lever 119 topermitthe spring 123 to restore the pin 111 to its normal position in which this pin couples thecams 83 and 97 with the left hand cam 80. A tension spring 124 pulls, inwardly upon the shafts 125 and 126 which carry the ratchet wheels and 112 and the bell-crank levers 73 and 114, these shafts having shoulders 127 which are pressed inwardly by thespring 124wher'eby the elements .70 and 108 are pressed against the leather washer 128 and the element 112 'spect 'to the reel mechanism that the reel is pressed against the leather washer 129, all

1. A fabric-making machine, comprising means for positioning a succession of separate fabric units in .discon necteol rows of units, together rows of fabric units, and mechanism for conveying a disconnected row of positioned fabric units to the mechanism for joining the rows offabric units.

7. A fabric making machine including mechanism for assembling fabric units intorows of fabric units; mechanism for joining rows of assembled fabric units; mechanism for conveying the rows of assembled fabric units to'the mechanism for joining the rows of fabric units; means for conveying the single fabric units to the mechanism for joining he same in rows; and means for causing the unit-joining function to be omitted when predetermined numbers of units have been assembled in the fabric rows.
8. A fabric making machine including mechanism for positioning fabric units into independent rows of fabric units; mechaunits one row at a time; mechanism for bringing rows of positioned fabric units within working range of the row-joining means for conveying the single fabric units .to the mechanism for positioning the samein rows; and means for causing the unit-positioning function for each row to be discontinued when predetermined numbers of units havebeen positioned in the fabric rows.
9. A fabric making machine including mechanism for assembling fabric units into rows of fabri'c'units; mechanism for joining rows of, assembled fabric units; reel mechanism for transferring rows of assembled fabric units to the row-joining mechanism ;i a conveyer belt for conveying the rows of. as-

A fabric making machine including mechanism for assembling fabric units into rows of fabric units; mechanism for 'joinmg rows of assembled fabric'units; reel mechanism for transferring rows of assembled fab.- ric units-to the row-joining mechanism; a conveyer belt for conveying the rows of assembled fabric units to the reel mechanism, said belt being so positioned with respect to the reel mechanism that the reel mechanism is adapted to present rows of fabric units previously applied thereto in such position to rows of fabric units conveyed thereto by the belt as to enable the reel mechanism to effect interengagement betweenthe fabric units applied thereto and the fabric units presented to these fabric units by the belt; means for-conveyingthe single fabric units to-the mechanism for joining the same in rows; and meansfor causing the unit-joining function to be omitted when predetermined numbers of units have been assembled in ,the fabric rows.
