IMPROVEMENT lN HOUSINGS FOR ROLLS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN RIGBY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Housings for Rolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be.a full, clear, and exact description-thereof, refer- ,of these boxes depend on the position and number of rolls in the housing.
In the old way of housing rolls there. was but one box, and the bean'ngsof the upper roll-rested upon those of the lower roll. It was impossible'to'take out the lower roll for repairs, 850., without unshipping the upper one, which involved a loss of time and labor.
This difficulty Ioveroome by having separate boxes for each roll, which boxes are entered by a slot, g, which extends from the outer edge of the housing into the box.
In order not to weaken one side of the housing I make the slots to alternate from side to side, as in the drawing, where one slot, '9, is in the front; side of the housing and the other in the back. Through these slotsthe journals of the rolls are slipped into the boxes, .wherein they can be adjusted, and from whence they caube taken without necessarily disturbing the other roll in any way, except so far as it may beineces sary to raise it so as to give the lower roll clearance.
The rolls can be adjusted by means of liners in the ordinary way.
The upper roll is'held down by means of screws It It working down upon the bearings through the top of the housings ff.
By thus having separate boxes and bearings for each roll I am able to adjust the rolls with great accuracy, and am thereby able to roll iron with a smaller fin than can be done in rolls fadjusted in the oldway.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The housings f, slotted and boxed, as at g, for the separate and independent adjustment and seating therein of the roller, substantially as described.
