Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2'7, 1915.
Application filed November 9, 1914. Serial No. 871,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. KELLA- WAY and EDWARD A. CHRIs'roPI-I, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Goring and Slicing Fruits and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for coring and slicing fruits, vegetables, or other like articles of food.
Among the chief objects of our invention is the provision of a device which combines strength, simplicity and effectiveness, with a minimum expense in manufacture; a device formed entirely of one piece of material prepared for the purpose, and requiring no further work to be performed thereon after being bent to shape; and a device which may be easily manipulated with a minimum of effort in conjunction with articles of various kinds, sizes, and shapes.
The invention consists further in numerous other features of construction and combinations of parts as will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, shown in position ready to operate upon an apple or other like article; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional detail, enlarged, taken on line 44: of Fig. 1.
Our present device is formed by bending a strip of metal such as fiat wire or steel ribbon to provide, in effect, a central portion 5, represented in Fig. 1 as hexagonal in shape, and a plurality of outer looped portions 6 arranged therearound. In the 0011- struction shown but a single piece of ma terial is utilized, the ends 7 thereof being overlapped and secured together in any appropriate manner, as by soldering. We prefer that the ends 7be joined along one of the walls of the center portion of the device as appears clearly in Fig. 1. To impart additional strength and rigidity to the device we contemplate the use of solder in the corners or angles 8 formed at the juncture of adjacent sides of the central portion thereof, although, such reinforcing means may not be required under all conditions. It willbe noted that the looped outer portions are provided each with an arch or apex 9 at the outer side thereof. This affords a con venient place for the fingers to grasp the in strument in use. The edges 10, which are required to perform a cutting operation are preferably sharpened by subjecting the material to the action of suitable mechanism prior to being bent to shape.
In operation it is apparent that the cutter should be passed through the fruit or other article in the direction of its core. The walls of the closed central portion cause the core to be severed from the remainder of the article. The article is sliced, furthermore, by reason of the cutting action exerted by the walls of the looped outer portions. Certain of the sliced portions will lie within the confines of these looped portions, and the remainder within the spaces between such portions.
l/Ve claim:
1. A device of the class described formed of a single piece of material and consisting of a plurality of inner walls abutting against one another and forming a central cutting member and a center opening, each of said inner walls continuing outwardly to form a loop, said loops constituting outwardly eX- tending cutting members, and each of said loops being substantially triangular in cross section and spaced apart from one another to form passages therebetween, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described formed of a single piece of material and consisting of a plurality of inner walls abutting against one another and forming a central cutting member and a center opening, each of said inner walls continuing outwardly to form a loop, said loops constituting outwardly eX- tending cutting members, each of said loops being substantially triangular in cross section and spaced apart from one another to form passages therebetween, and the con tral portion of each outer wall of each loop section being a greater distance from the center of the device than the ends of said walls, substantially as described.
