1 M z/ Z *H I M HUGH ll'i. BOL'lL, 0T5 COREY, PENNSYLVANIA.
CIECUITTBREAKER.
To cZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known. that l, HUGH M. BOAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corry, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Circuit-Breakers, of which the following is a specification.
lhis invention relates to improvements in circuit breakers and has particular application to a circuit breaker for opening the local sounder circuits of telegraph apparatus working on the closed circuit principle.
lln carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a circuit breaker of the class described whereby the local sounder circuits of telegraph systems of the closed circuit type will be opened and held open while the line is idle, thereby preserving tie life of the local batteries and enabling the use of open circuit batteries to energize the Sounders.
llt is also my purpose to provide a circuit opening device which will be under the control of the line relay and actuated thereby to open the controlled local circuit when the line is idle.
Furthermore, l aim to provide a circuit breaker which will embrace the desired fea-- tures of simplicity, efficiency and durability, which will operate effectively under all conditions and which may be readily and convenier installed,
l -l ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, com? "nation and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims. 7
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a circuit breaker constructed in accordance with the present invention, same being shown'in use. Q is a cross sectional view on the line "2 Fig. i. Fig". 3 is a "imilar view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates an invertel substantially U- shaped supporting frame having a long limb and a relatively short limb 3. Fastened to the inner face of the short limb 3 and depending; therefrom and spaced apart are parallel contact strips 4:, 5 insulated from each other lay means of a block of insulating material 6 and from the adjacent face of the limb means of a strip of insulation 7. adapted to engage the adjacent portion of the contact strip 4. Fastened to the inner surface of the limb 2 adjacent to the lower end thereof is a yoke 9 having the opposite limbs thereof lying in planes parallel with the limbs of the frame 1. Threaded through alining openings in the limb 2 and the adj cent limb of the yoke is an adjustable stop crew 10, while threaded through an open: ing in the opposite limb of the yoke and alin mg with the stop screw is an adjustable hacl stop screw 11.
1.2 designates the line relay comprising the coils 1S and armature 14 under the influence of the poles or the coils of the relay and pivoted atone end as at 15 for swing ing movement. In the present instance, the coils of the relay 13 are disposed in. a h ori zontal plane and the circuit closer is supported upon a block 16 resting upon the upper surface of the coils and suitably se cured thereto, while the armature 1 is disposed, vertically and swings about a her zontal pivot. A coiled expansion spring 1? has one end fastened to the armature and the oppcsiteeirtremity secured to an appro priate part of the frame of the relay, such spring acting to maintain the armature let faces of the'coils of the relay. Uprising from the upper extremity of the armature 14 and suitably fastened thereto is armature lever 18 having the upper end thereof interposed between the confronting surfaces of the lower end of the contact strip 42 and the adjustable hack stop screw 11 and equipped with a contact 19.
20 designates the local circuit"including; the sounder 21 and local battery 22. @ne terminal of the circuit 20 is connected with the contact strip 5 and the opposite end thereof secured to the armature ll at the pivot point thereof.
In practice, when the line relay 13 is encrgized and deenergized, the armature l4 and lever 18 are swung hack and forth in accordance with the rapidity of the current impulses in the windings of the relay and in the forward movement of the armature and armature lever under the action ofthe relay the contact 19 engages the lower extremity of the contact l thereby completing the local circuit 21 and energizing the sounder, while when the armature is relieved of influence of the poles of he gs the relay the spring Ill Patented July 2'2, @915,
I and withdraws the contact 19 out of enl circuit as previously described,'while in the continued movement of the lever under the action of the relay "the contact strip 4c is swung out of engagement with the bent end 8 of the strip 5 thereby breaking the sounder circuit and when the line relay is energized and the line idle the armature lever 18 and lower extremity of the contact strip 4L remain against the front stop screw 10 thereby holding the local circuit 20 open and the sounder deenergized. Suitably fastened to the short limb 3 of the supporting frame 1 and passed through an opening in the relatively long limb 2 of such frame is a threaded shank 28 upon which is threaded a thumb nut 24 which, when tightened, acts upon the shank 23 to draw the short limb 3 toward the limb 2 of the frame whereby the distance between the lower extremity of the contact strip 4: and
the contact 19 on the upper end of the armature lever 18 may be varied.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent.
It will be seen that I have provided a circuit opener or breaker whereby the local sounder circuits of telegraph systems of the closed circuit type may be held open by the line relay when the line is idle.
While I haveherein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of, illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation maybe made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A circuit breaker of the class described comprising an inverted U-shaped supporting frame having a short limb and a relatively long limb, contact strips carried by said short limb and insulated. therefrom and normally in engagement with each other, a local circuit having one terminal connected with one of said strips, a line relay, a con nection between the armature of said relay and the other terminal of said circuit, and a lever connected to said armature and movable therewith under the action of the coils of the relay to engage one of said contact strips to close the local circuit in the initial movement thereof and to break such local circuit in the continued movement thereof.
2. A circuit breaker of the class described comprising an inverted U-shaped support ing frame having a short limb and a relatively long limb, contact strips carried by said short limb and insulated therefrom and normally in engagement with each other, a local. circuit having one terminal connected with one of said strips, a line relay, a connection between the armature of said relay and the other terminal of said circuit, a lever connected to said armature and morable therewith under the action of the coils of the relay to engage one of said contact strips to close the local circuit in the initial movement thereof and to break such local circuit in the continued n'iovement thereof, and means for drawing said short limb toward said long limb whereby the space bctween said armature lever and the adjacent contact strip may be varied.
In testimony whereof I allirr my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HUGH M. 130121).
