To, all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Y. HAsJsELL, a, citizen 0,1 the United States, and a resident of New London,l in the County of New London and State of Connecticut, have Yen-ted a new and Improved Navigatdrs (.ourse Marker and Finder, of which the 'following isa full, clear, and exact descrip,- tion.

Among the objects of this improvement is to simplify the construction and operation of this Gltllfacter of instruments, whereby not only de I lessen the Cost of the Same, hut I am able to produce an instrument of the maxi-mum Simplicity of manipulation and. control- The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be mere fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 isa fragmentary view of a ships y lalnnacle equipped with a preferred forrn of my invention; Fig. .2 is asectional detail on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; F ig. 3 is a vertical section of the main parts of my device on a plane at right angles toy Fig. 2; Fig. 4; is a plan view of the upper endl of the quill 0r parting from .the spirit of the invention hereinafter more fully-described and specifically claimed.
Referring more particularly to the. drawieee the mm1-eral 1.0 indicates the t0n 01' canopy of the billllacle within which is lopated the compass dial 11 any usual or preferred manner, the Seme Per Se Constituting no part .of this invention.
At`12 I show a sleeve fitted in a hole 13 in the binnacle top, the axis of the sleeve being vertical and the interior thereof be ing of smooth cylindrical forni providinga bearing for a quill 14. Adjacent the head of the sleeve is a shoulder 15 which is seated against the upper surface of the binnacle top, and a lock nut 16 threaded upon the lower end of the sleeve coperates with the under surface of the ,said top to fix the sleeve rigidly but removably in position. Said head carries a set screw 17 which may he located on any side of the sleeve according to the personal preferences of the navigator prior to the locking effect of the nut 16. The quill or stem 14 as above premised is located rotatably within the sleeve 1.2 and is provided with a flange 18 adtacent its upper end which rests upon the head ofthe sleeve. The lower portion of the quill is screw threaded andy a collar 19 threaded thereupon is adapted to bear lightly against the lower en d of the sleeve toA prevent vertical movement of the quill. A set screw 20 operating through this collar is adapted to secure it from accidental movement around the quill.v The quill is provided with an interior `smooth cylindlCal bore 21 into which is adjustably fitted a vertical rod 22. The quill, however, is provided with a lug 2,3 of any suitable nature extending radially into a groove 2l formed in the rod and extending from the lower end thereof upwardly to any desired distance. The lug prevents rotation of the. rod independently of thev quill. The upper end of the quill is split Vas indicated at 25., and exteriorly screw threaded as at 26 for coperation with a clutch thilnble 27 for locking the rod at the desired vertical adjustment within the bore Q1. The lower end of the quill lll is provided with a vertical diainctrical slot 28 having parallel sides through which a screw or pivot 29` is adapted to pass perpendicularly to said sides.
At 30 is indicated a pointer of any suitable. form or length cooperating with the compass dial but out of contact therewith. The pointer, however, operates radially with respect to the axis of the quill and rod 92. Apt its upper end the pointer is provided with a disk-shaped hub31 fitted within the slot 28 and pivoted upon the pivot 29. The pointer, therefore, may be adjustedl freely up and downaround the pivot 29 so as to accommodate its point to varying conditions with respect to the compass dial, the pointer, however', being maintained always in the same vertical radial plane with re-A spect to the quill and rod.A As a preferred means for determining the elevation of the.

' At the upperend of the rod 22 is formed an open yoke'or loop 36 lying in a vertical plane' at right angles to the vertical` plane of the pointer.` The side bars of the yoke parallelto each other and the opposing vfaces aref'lat and'smooth, lforming bearing surfaces for acylindrical block 37 pivoted for rotation therein upon a pair of pivot pins or screws 3S extending through the said side bars of the yoke on the same horizontal axis. rIhe screws 38 may be tightened more or less to determine the frictional engage# ment between the yoke and the block and hence the' degree of friction desired for the block tending to resist its pivotal movement in the yoke. The block is provided with a bore-39 extending therethrough with its axis perpendicularr to the axis of the screws 38,
' and in this bore 39 is adjustably fitted the of a comparatively simple nature and hence easily assembled or disassembled. The axis of the sighting tube is arranged in the same vertical plane as the pointer and is maintained therein by reason of the pivotal connections described, irrespective of the vertical movements in saidY plane. The navigator, therefore, may readily indicateV upon the compass dial the location of any distant object or'light that he may view through the sighting tube,l and such indication may be made permanent, as desired at times, by the action of the set screw 17.
.The parts of the device when separated occupy comparatively little space, the structure `of the Vrod 22 being such that it is adapted to nest within the sighting tube.
The instrument is neat in appearance and adds greatly to the efficiency of the steering apparatus.
I claim: v
1. In a device. of the class set forth, the combination of a vertical rod, means to secure said rod for rotation around its axis in a ships binnacle, a pointer operated from the lower end of the rod, the upper end of 'the rod being provided with an integral yoke having parallel side bars with smooth inner surfaces, the yoke lying in a. vertical plane at right angles to the plane of the pointer, a
bearing block within the yoke, said blockhaving smooth fiat ends cooperating with said smooth inner faces of the yoke bars, means frictionally securing the block in the place indicated for rotation around a horizontal axis, and a sighting tube carried by said block.

ends of the block being fiat and having frictional engagement with the sides of the yoke, said block having a bore therethrough at right angles to the axis of the pivots, a cylindrical sighting tube adjustable rotarily and longitudinally of said block bore, and means acting through the block against the tube to secure it in adjusted position.
3. The combination of a vertical rod, a sighting tube pivoted to the upper end of the rod for movement in a definite vertical plane with respect to the rod, means to support the rod for rotation around its axis, a pointer pivoted adjacent the lower end of the rod and extending radially from the axis thereof in the same plane as the axis of the sighting tube, and means to adjust the pointer vertically around its horizontalpivotal axis, said adjusting means comprising a vertically adjustable rotary member bearing upon the shank of the pointer, substantially as set forth.
4. 'lhe combination of a quill having an axial bore and a screw threaded lower end, a rod fitted non-rotarily within the quill bore, a sighting tube connected to the upper end of the rod, means to support the quill and rod for rotation around a fixed vertical axis, the lower end of the quill having a diametrical slot arranged in the same vertical plane as the axis of the sighting tube, a pointer having a disk-like hub journaled on a horizontal axis in said quill slot and extending thence radially in the aforesaid Vertical plane, and a runner threaded upon the lower end of the quill and having a cylindrical flange at its upper end bearing against the lower portion of the pointer adjacent the hub for adj usting the pointer vertically, substantially as set forth.
