WINDOW-CATCH.
Application filed June 11, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIKOLAJ-PIOTROWS1H, a subject of the Emperor of Austrla- Hungary, residing at Elmira Heights, 111 the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and us ful Improvements in lVindow Catches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in window catches.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an automatic catch carried by a window sash and whereby the same is retained in any desired adjusted pos tion.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sash carried catch which, although manually releasable allows the sash to be forcibly moved as may be found desirable and automatically locked in adjusted position. i
A still further object of the invention s to 1)l0"1(l8 an automatic sash catch engageable with a casing member and being readily released when desired to adjust the sash at any height within the casing.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a corner portion of a window provided with the present device, the sash being closed and portions of the casing being removed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged hori- Zcntal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of a sash provided with the device. Fig. 4 is a vertical central sectional view thereof, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device housing partially broken away.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the device is herein illustrated in connection with a lower sash 10 illustrated in Fig. 1 as in its closed position within the window casing 11. A rack 12 is secured to the inner side of the window casing lying parallel to the adjacent edge 13 of the sash and extending the desired distance up the casing and being provided with inwardly-projecting Specification of Letters Patent.

Ahousing 15 of the form best illustrated in Fig. 5 is countersunk within a socket 16 in the sash edge 13, the said socket havin an enlarged outer portion'or chamber 1? opening at the face of the said sash edge.
The housing 15 is provided With parallel spaced supporting plates 19 provided with oppositely arranged slots 20 therethrough and arranged in alinement with each other and adapted for trunnioning an axle 21. A toothed friction wheel 22 is secured to the said. axle 21 between the plates 19 and the teeth 23 thereof are adapted for normal engagement with the teeth 11 of the window casing rack 12. The housing 15 is provided with an inturned lip 2 1 lying substantially at the bottom of the chamber 17 inwardly of the Wheel 22 and is provided with an outwardly projectin transverse single tooth or rib 25 normally resiliently maintained in engagement with the .teeth of the wheel 22 by means of a coil spring 26 provided within the housing socket 16 and bearing between the said lip and a retaining lug 27 at the inner end of the said housing.
Side slots 28 are oppositely arranged within the side walls of the chamber 17 and the axle 21 is provided with an extension 29 at one end thereof slidably arranged within one of the slots 28, which slot is closed at one end forming a socket while the opposite end 230 of the axle 21 projects outwardly of the sash through the slot 28 which is open at the edge of the sash.
An operating lever 31 is pivoted as at 32 to the outer side of the sash 10 and. is provided with a slot 33 within which the axle end 30 is positioned. The outer ends of the plates 19 have overturned portions 3 1 adapted to receive screws for retaining the housing 15 within the socket 16.
From this detailed description of the device the complete operation thereof will be apparent. The spring 27 normally retaining the rib 25 in engagement with the teeth 23 of the wheel 22, the said wheel teeth are resiliently maintained in mesh with the rack teeth 14: but this engagement at the opposite sides of the wheel 22 allows the sash 10 to be forcibly shifted which forcibly rotates the wheel 22 but when the sash is so shifted, the teeth of the wheel are again retained in their meshed relations which retains the sash in its adjusted position. It will be noted that the spring 26 is sufliciently strong to allow the said wheel 22 to thus maintain the weight of the sash but is not strong enough to prevent a manual shifting of the sash when desired. For an easy movement of the sash however, it is only necessary. to force outwardly the lever 31 which will inwardly shift the axle 21 and the wheel 22, thus entirely releasing the wheel 22 from the rack teeth 1% and when the sash reaches the desired position, the lever 31 is released and the spring 26 will automatically engage the toothed wheel with the casing rack and retain the sash in position.
lVhat I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described, comprising in combination with a window easing having a sash slidably mounted therein, a toothed rack carried by the casing adjacent the edge of the sash, the said sash having in the edge thereof a receiving socket provided with an enlarged chamber opening opposite the said rack, a housing positioned within the said. socket and having a resilient inwardly-turned lip provided with a transverse engaging rib, an expansion spring for the said lip positioned within the said housing,slotted plates oppositely carried by the said housing and outwardly projecting through the said chamber, the said sash having oppositely arranged slots in alinement with the slots of the said plates, an axle trunnioned within the said plate slots and slidably arranged within the said sash slots,
and a toothed wheel secured to the said axle between the said plates and being in normal contact with the said rib and easing teeth upon the opposite sides thereof.
2. A device of the class described, comprising in combination with a window easing having a sash slidably mounted therein, a toothed rack carried by the casing adjacent the edge oi the sash, the said sash having in the edge thereof a receiving socket provided with an enlarged chamber opening opposite the said rack, a housing positioned within the said socket and. having a resilient inwardlyturned lip provided with a trans verse engaging rib, an expansion spring for the said lip positioned within the said honsing, slotted plates oppositely carried by the said housing and outwardly pro]ecting through the said chamber, the said sash having oppositely arranged slots in alinement with the slots of the said plates, an axle trunnioned within the said plate slots and slidably arranged within the said sash slots, :1 toothed wheel secured to the said axle between the said plates and being in normal contact with the said rib and easing teeth upon the opposite sides thereof, the axle being provided with one end extending outwardly of the sash, and an operating lever pivoted to the outer side of the sash and ha ving pivotal slotted engagement with one end 0 of the said lever.
